We move on from the very mellow episode that took place in Melbourne, and we now see the Marines dealing with all sorts of problems on the islands again. The weather, the terrain, the diseases and especially the PTSD, it's all really starting to take a toll..

Rest in Peace, Luke.

Marine "medics" are actually Navy personell. They are, officially, called "Hospital Corpsman" in the USN, hence the name. They get assigned to Marine units after their training and usually stay there.

Great reaction, observing the trials of fighting in the jungle. Gibson, the Marine who Leckie gave cigarettes to, was the same Marine who strangled that dying Japanese soldier and shot that cow in Melbourne. I’m no psychiatrist, but I imagine he’s possibly a psychopath. Definitely pathological. I’m glad Major Dad commented on the lieutenant who took Leckie’s chest and pistol. When Lt. Larkin claimed that only officers could have that, I thought he was being an ass, but wasn’t sure if there was some regulation about that. Now I see that he did steal and was an ass! What a difference between him and Major Winters (“Never put yourself in a position where you can take from these men”). I think the delay in relieving the Marines is related to logistics. There was 7,000 miles of sea to travel from stateside, plus all the equipment, materiel, etc. I’ve said it before, if I had to choose between Bastogne or the Pacific, I’d take Bastogne. The winter was terrible, but at least there were no insects, snakes, lizards, and other crawly creatures that would make me insane. And outside the Ardennes forest, there was civilization. Outside the jungle there was, well, more jungle. I’m sorry to hear about your friend. May he Rest In Peace. 🙏🏼
