So happy to see you and your dad reacting together. I've not seen this series so I will be reacting along with you too and listening to your expertise on the subject .

Hans Zimmer composed the music, which I like better than Band of Brothers’ theme. Elegiac, hymn-like... just beautiful.

What a great reaction. I really enjoyed the discussion in the end, covering Midway, tactics, strategies, culture clashes. And Sonny’s observation about the jungle being an issue proves correct. I’ve read the combat memoirs of Sledge, Leckie and Burgin, which all said the jungle was an enemy too.

I assume we're suppose to sync the original vid to this since this version is way too faded. I know you were discussing that for future content. I do think it's a great compromise, I'll try it and let you know how it goes.

Good first episode guys. I like the extra little bits of history your father brings to these reactions. So if we have to wait a week or two for him to participate fine with me. The battle of Midway is a fascinating study. Up to that point of the war the Japanese Navy had not been defeated and at Midway so many things went wrong for them it almost mind boggling and so many things went right for the Americans. Your father is absolutely right about Americans not wanting to get involved in another European war. Even after Pearl Harbor it was the Japanese the average citizens wanted to go after. The politicians would have had a hard job selling a European war to them at that point. Thankfully the military genius Hitler solved that problem for them by declaring war on the US first.

Great reaction, your dad really knows his stuff. The machine gun that Leckie was carrying was called an M1917. You wouldn't have seen it in Band of Brothers because the US army paratroopers were using a slightly newer machine gun. As you might have noticed the m1917 is very strange looking. The Marines with their smaller budget were still using older weapons from WWI when WWII started. For another example the marines were still using bolt action rifles while the US army was using the newer M1 Garand rifle which fired much faster. Also the naval battle depicted here was called "the battle of Savo Island" and there's a very informative youtube video about it by a channel called "Montemayer" that explains how the Americans and British forces suffered such a humiliating defeat. The video is called "Battle of Savo Island 1942," it adds a lot of information and context to a battle that was only shown for a few seconds in this episode.

Great stuff guys! I thought I would mind having to sync up the videos, but it really wasn’t a problem at all. Those mutilated soldiers where most likely captured Australians. The Japanese would torture and kill them and then leave their mutilated bodies where they knew allied soldiers would be moving through, often with signs in English like “he took a long time to die” as a form of psychological warfare.

Glad you enjoyed the podcast Major! I was literally just about to suggest it again!

One thing they omitted in this episode is that “Alligator Creek” is a misnomer. There were no alligators - there were crocodiles. Leckie wrote a chilling incident about how they were swimming in the creek, and later he saw a “V” shape in the water, then heard crunching sounds. It was the crocodiles eating the dead Japanese. Sickening.

I'm unable to see it for some reason. I see it faintly but that's all.

Can not see the video screen. BOB you could see perfectly. What's up with that?
