It's our Holiday 2019 Super Hero Movie Round-Up!

Quick Critique: Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Into The Spider-Verse is fan-tastic and you should totally go see it! And that's coming from somebody that hated how Miles Morales was introduced in the Ultimate comics. In less than two hours, the movie tells a better story than comics have done in years. Characters grow, villains have good motivations and feel like actual people, people die for story reasons and not as cheap gimmicks, and the world changes due to the events of the story. Those are all things I want from comic stories that comics rarely deliver on. And holy cow does it just look amazing. A quick check on IMDB shows that its budget was almost half that of the last live action Spider-Man movie, so can we please just stop doing live action superhero movies and have more animated ones if they're going to have this much style. Guh, this movie is so good!

Quick Critique: Aquaman

On the flip side of the super hero coin, we have Aquaman. It attempts to look cool in poses and quips and every single time they just fall flat, its lousy writing and terrible attempts at levity, Willem Dafoe just looked confused why he was there, Aquaman wasn't even the one that saved the day in the end, and it was all so corny but not in a fun way. You just can't make a dude in a bad costume look cool riding a CG sea horse, no matter how buff that dude is. It needed to lean into the cheese rather than fight it. Make Aquaman the fish out of water/the total goofball in a super serious world or make the whole thing cheesy. The design on the monsters and the Trenched were great and the underwater scenery was nice, but if walking out of your movie the only thing I'm interested in was how it was filmed, that was a bad movie. It's a good MST3K because it's watchable enough that you can sit through it, but it's far more enjoyable to poke fun at it and question its choices.

Huh, you're the first person I've seen give Aquaman a less-than-glowing review. I guess your expectations haven't been utterly decimated by the previous DCEU entries?

Wow, if you thought JL was that bad (I _almost_ liked it), I wonder what you'd describe BvS as. I _actively_ hated that piece of fetid shit.

BvS is definitely on the Justice League spectrum. Most definitely terrible, but there's a part of my brain that's telling me I haven't seen the whole movie when I'm 99% sure I actually have. Maybe it's a defense mechanism?
