Chapter 2: A New Life

Page 41

Rico has just finished giving Blue the bare minimum story details but has explained that he's not from here and was transported off into the cosmos after an encounter with some aliens he'd never heard of before. Blue takes all this in stride and listens thoughtfully, but relaxed. "Well of course you don't activate a transporter without prepping an arrival point. There's a reason nobody uses that kind of tech anymore... But a lot of people here have weird stories and that's why they work at the facility. You can come and go, so it helps. I work here off and on when I'm not out exploring or seeing the sights."

She continues with a wave of her hand, including the facility and city around it. "The Galactic Standard looks after all the developed species of the known universe. It just kept growing as more and more worlds became known and achieved space travel, so now it encompasses just about everything. I suppose that includes you now too."

Rico is skeptical and leans in with raised eyebrows. "Then why have I never heard of them?"

Blue leans back on his bed with a dismissive shrug. "Maybe because you're a part of a backwards world that tried to explore space dressed like THAT."

Author's Notes:

She's slagging on your planet, Rico! Represent! You're doing Earth some shame.

There's something I really like about the name "Galactic Standard". It's benevolent, sterile, yet oddly menacing. Like the department of weights and measures had a coup and took over.
