i go with vibes mostly 🥲 for moodier pieces i usually just go with above lightning, and depending on whether i want to keep the shading flatter or not, i put the light source closer or further away

she paints the face fully and renders bangs on top, then sets to transparency. whether thats done by erasing w a soft airbrush or tweaking opacity, not sure!! its cool to see her technique - esp how she renders layers so completely. genius ^_^
