the guy named Kimblee at the end of this episode actually *was* in the first episode as well, he just wasn't the main bad guy with the water/ice powers (Isaac McDougal) but the guy that Isaac tried to recruit to his side after breaking into the prison

I love the way Mustang and Hughes seem to have worked out this routine where they bicker all the time on the phone, so that nobody will pay attention when they switch to talking about serious subjects. Hughes isn't faking, he really is a doof who brags constantly about his wife and daughter, but they've turned it to their advantage. Ed and Al had the "there's something I'm afraid to tell you" conversation last episode, right before Armstrong interrupted to weep manly tears on them again. (Not a criticism, Armstrong is the best.) (Your theories this time are reminding me of the movie "The Prestige". That'd be a fun one to react to! Just try not to learn much about it beforehand.)
