Also, just wanted to put this out there, but the English dub of this show is one of the best compared to other dubs. I'd rewatch episode 1 and see if you like it. Just a suggestion. But yeah, these kids really went through it, huh?

Without getting to much into specifics, this show is incredibly good at answering all the random questions one might have when watching it a bunch of episodes down the line - just in this one alone I've noticed like three different questions you guys asked that will be answered in future episodes ^^

oh and as for why they redid the whole Series: the original FMA anime came out while the manga was still being written and eventually started diverging massively from the manga like halfway through when they couldn't wait around for the release of the manga anymore - therefore basically all the major plot points end up being completely different and the original show has a much more pessimistic/nihilistic vibe to it as a whole (think back on this in like a handful of eps xD). On a whole it's basically a "later seasons of GoT" type of deal - albeit still a decent enough anime, just massively overshadowed by the version you're watching, Brotherhood, which is the redo they made once all of the manga had been released. It follows the events of the manga very closely and thus can profit more from the mangakas excellent writing as well as from all the setups she planted in the earlier chapters (FMA:B is absolutely WILD on a rewatch, because it's basically 64 episodes of "OMG, they are already hinting at 'thing' this early on?!? No Way?!?).

IKR, there's a line in the very first episode that made me do a real spit-take 30 or more episodes later.

Al does use alchemy in episode 1. You see him activate a circle underneath himself to launch a pillar of rock he's standing on to get up on top of the ice.

The symbol on the back of Ed's coat, the one that looks a bit like a question mark, is called the Flamel crest after the alchemist you mentioned. :) It comes up in the 2003 anime, but IIRC this version didn't have time to cover it. Another thing FMAB skips, and one of the few quibbles I have with it, is the answer to your questions about Al. The 2003 anime clarifies that both boys passed the written part of the exam, to Mustang's surprise. Al had to drop out there before any military doctor could give him a physical. (At this point in the show Mustang, Hawkeye, Winry and her grandma are the only ones who know the kids committed a major felony. ) Al is just as talented an alchemist as Ed but people seem to treat him like a sidekick. I wonder if there's fic out there that explores the idea of him resenting it?

I noticed you guys missed the post credit scene for this episode. Friendly reminder there will be several post credits scenes through out several episodes of the series which will give hints of where the overall plot will be going.
