Yeah… I’ve been bracing for this one. On the plus side, we got Orange as an ally this episode! You guys were a bit confused about his motivations so I'll break it down like this: before anything else he was a guard for Lelouch's mother who was absolutely devoted to her and he has a ridiculous sense of loyalty. He had actually believed similar to Cornelia that Lelouch and Nunnally had died in Japan and held a grudge against the country and it's people, leading to the genocidal cruelty we see in the first episodes. Ironically if he had known who Lelouch was he probably would have joined up with him way back in season 1, making the whole Orange conspiracy an actual thing. Jerimiah was rebuilt and sent after Lelouch by "the order" that has been mentioned a few times. They seem to be a higher level branch of the Britanian forces studying Geass. V.V has also been shown to be a part of the order. It seems that they did not tell Jerimiah about Lelouch's identity as Lady Marianne's son, only about him being Zero, so as far as he knew, he was going after the terrorist who betrayed his homeland and dishonored him. Knowing now how much loyalty means to him it makes alot of sense how crazy Orange went when framed as a traitor. After learning the truth of who Lelouch is he sees serving Marriane's son as a way to redeem himself for failing to protect her.

I'd like to mention that there was a series of Code Geass movies that recap the events of the anime and are the continuity from which we get the sequel movie Lelouch of the Resurrection(Do not look up anything about it at all. Even just the basic concept of the movie is a spoiler.) In those movies they cut alot of things, including Mao’s whole plotline and every Shirley focused arc. As a result she survives in this bizzarro alternate timeline but has no real role whatsoever in the story.

Second half and a new opening! How do you think it will end? Will Lelouch succeed? Will Japan be liberated? Will Brittania fall?! How will the others react to Shirley's death? What will happen to Suzaku!? Etc.

New OP! New ED! I really like this OP the sure for this cour of the show. This episode hurts in a very different way than Lelouch's previous losses. There's reliving the shock, rewatching it, and remembering his previous losses as well. I think loosing Shirley (again) but for real this time, permanently, that it is just the compounded nature of everything that has happened thus far. For being a side character that is completely uninvolved in the wider happenings in the world, Shirley's death feels like a point of no return for the story to me. Euphy was pure hearted and innocent but involved in worldly affairs due to her station as princess and sub-viceroy. Shirley at the end of the day was just a common civilian living her own life.
