Chapter 9: He Still Has to Say Thank You!
"Alright, then let's consider me owing you a favor."
Seeing that Ling Xi truly didn't want the reward, Mobius withdrew the bank card and continued, "However... even though you refused my gratitude, I've heard that your financial situation might not be the best right now? Plus, you've also quit your job."
"Well... yes."
Ling Xi quietly nodded and admitted, "I quit that job because it was taking up too much of my time."
"What are you planning to do now?"
Mobius pretended to be concerned, saying, "While Thousand Feather Academy provides some financial aid to outstanding students, I don't think it would be enough for you, especially considering the high cost of living in Changkong City."
Klein looked at Mobius with some confusion. When did the doctor start caring about other people's lives? And... they had just met less than a day ago.
"It's fine."
Ling Xi shook his head and smiled, saying, "I'm actually planning to leave Changkong City soon and find a job back in Shenzhou. Then I'll think about other things."
"Eh... leave?"
Mobius suddenly became alert and asked, "Aren't you a student at Thousand Feather Academy? And you're about to graduate from high school in half a year. If you leave Changkong City now... are you giving up on your education? Besides, if you drop out, you'll lose the financial aid from Thousand Feather Academy."
"Um..."
Ling Xi hesitated for a moment, unsure how to explain. He couldn't just tell Mobius that he knew the plot and that the third Honkai Impact was going to happen in Changkong City, right?
Come on, if he said something like that and couldn't provide a reasonable explanation, he might just get locked up and dissected!
"Because of financial pressure."
Klein provided a more reasonable guess, saying, "Changkong City has high living costs due to intense competition for jobs. The result is inflated prices and relatively low wages."
"Um... yes, that's right."
Ling Xi quickly nodded. He had no money left and wanted to go back home. The explanation seemed pretty reasonable, right?
"I see..."
Mobius nodded thoughtfully and then gradually broke into a mischievous smile. She looked at Ling Xi with a grin and said, "Ling Xi, my dear classmate..."
Ling Xi: "..."
Hey, hey, hey, can you not look at me like that? It's terrifying!
"Cough, cough, don't worry, Ling Xi, I'm not a good person... I mean, I'm not a bad person either."
Mobius cleared her throat and chuckled, "You misunderstand me. You mentioned that you wanted to return to Shenzhou due to financial reasons, right? So... if I help you solve your financial issues, would that mean you'd be willing to stay?"
"Ah?"
Ling Xi was momentarily puzzled, but he quickly caught on and said, "Doctor Mobius, I just said, I did what I did last night without expecting any return. Please don't bring it up again."
"No, no, no, you're misunderstanding me."
Mobius quickly explained, smiling, "What I mean is, how about I help you find a job? With a job, you could stay in Changkong City."
"Job..."
Ling Xi hesitated for a moment, but he had no intention of agreeing. Obviously, he wasn't staying in Changkong City for a job; he was staying because of the Honkai!
"Don't be so quick to refuse. This job is quite easy."
Mobius smiled and said, "Look, even though my lab is big, we're short on staff. So, would you be interested in working in my lab? With a job, your problem would be solved."
Klein: "???"
Indeed, she was a doctor. This move was masterful – she had managed to convince Ling Xi to join the lab and used solving his job problem as the reason for recruitment. Not only did she achieve her initial goal of recruiting Ling Xi, but she also managed to maneuver it so that Ling Xi might even thank them in the end.
"Eh..."
Hearing Mobius's offer, Ling Xi was instantly tempted. He had to be tempted – after all, who was Mobius?
A former civilization's great figure, one of the Thirteen Heroes of the Fire Moth, a super scientist. If he could secure Mobius's "support," then his spot for the Stigmata Dormant Repository would be practically guaranteed!
However, Ling Xi was clear about his own situation. So, he said, "But I know nothing about working in a lab. I'm afraid I might slow things down..."
"It's alright, it's alright. You have Klein here."
Mobius's smile grew even brighter as she said, "If there's anything you don't understand, you can ask Klein for help or just leave it to her. After all, once you finish your work, Klein will be the one checking it."
Klein: "..." Hey, Doctor, could you not add more work for me?
Already having to deal with the pitfalls of Nuwa, Fuxi and other issues in the lab was troublesome enough. Now... they wanted to add another layer?
Ling Xi, still contemplating his options, weighed the decision of whether to prioritize escaping for his life from Changkong City or grabbing onto Mobius's metaphorical "big thigh."
If it were any place other than Changkong City, he would have readily agreed. But the problem was that it was Changkong City. Ling Xi was afraid that if he stayed in Changkong City, he might end up missing out on grasping that "big thigh" and perhaps even lose his life when the Third Honkai Impact erupted.
However, it probably wouldn't happen. He had the support of Siegfried Kaslana and Tesla Stigmata, so he had a higher resistance against the Honkai's influence. As long as he didn't directly face the divine power of the Third Lawmaker Thunder, he should be relatively safe.
After pondering for a while, Ling Xi asked again, "One last question: I'm still a student at Thousand Feather Academy..."
"No worries. Thousand Feather Academy has a cooperative relationship with our branch. You can consider this as part-time work. Besides..."
Mobius smiled and said, "You don't have classes every day, and when you have free time or when I notify you, you can come in. Otherwise, I won't disturb you."
"Alright then, since Mobius is offering, I'll give it a try."
Seeing Mobius go this far with her proposal, Ling Xi decided to agree. No matter what, he could at least embrace this "big thigh" for now. After all, relying on the resources of the Fire Moth would be much more reliable than starting from scratch.
"Alright, it's settled then. Starting today, you're my assistant. Please guide me!"
Seeing Ling Xi agree so readily, Mobius smiled happily. Whether Ling Xi was the person she had met in H City or not, his abilities displayed last night piqued her interest.
"Doctor, are you sure about this...?"
Klein looked at Ling Xi, who seemed grateful despite feeling tricked, with some concern. She was starting to feel a bit sorry for him.
"Why wouldn't it be good?"
Mobius said earnestly, "I've solved the issue of short staff in the lab and helped Ling Xi find a job. It's a win-win situation, isn't it? Besides... I helped Ling Xi with his job issue, so he should be thanking me!"
"Thank you, Doctor!"
Ling Xi also didn't hesitate to express his gratitude. This was genuine; after all... he really did want to rely on Mobius, even if it meant figuratively clinging to Mobius's support.
Klein: "..."
