My maternal grandparents both had dementia towards the end of their lives. It was horrible. I miss them very much, but I’m glad they are no longer suffering. Especially my grandpa, who was a geophysicist for the Navy and extremely intelligent, because it happened slowly enough that he was aware it was happening. That made it so much worse. He and I were very close and I was very sad for me when he died, but I was really happy for him. It’s a weird thing to say, but it’s true.
