Derek knew that the only way to get Reid to pick up the phone was to ask him something about work. Of course he was the one able to reach him. When Spence shows up, everyone looked surprise or shock, but Derek only looked proud. A proud big brother. He knew he would show up, he knew he would be the one figuring out the case, because Reid is still Reid, even when he's hurting. And that's exactly what Spence needed to realise: he can survive this and he's still the same person as he was before. That pain doesn't define him. The writers did an amazing job here. Even though Hotch understands his pain, even if he has this amazing relationship with JJ, even if Blake was the one who knew about Maeve before anyone else, it could only be Derek in this role. He's the one who understands how Reid's mind works and how to get past the genius to reach the person behind it. He's always the first to notice when Reid lacks of sleep, when he's stressed, when he hides something... and he's the one able to get him to open up, to feel safe talking about it. He probably didn't show up to his appartment, he knew it was useless. He gave him time, called a few time to show Reid he was there, and then he asked for his help. Beautiful job by the writers...
