Obviously I wasn’t a fan of the relationship lol, I want Bones to be with Booth BUT, I don’t think the relationship was pointless. Sullivan was going to leave regardless, they made the point of telling us he was not happy in the FBI anymore, he was a free spirit and Bones got caught in his orbit for a bit. She’s more grounded though, they never would have would have worked out as a final couple. I do, however, think this highlights Bones’ faults with growing in a relationship and it shows her that she’s not really sure what she wants at this point. The relationship helped her grow and that’s all we could really hope for with someone who has been pretty closed off emotionally.

I don’t think he was pointless. He was needed to help Dr Brennen grow. She is so used to being alone and so oblivious to pop culture and generalized references. Sully came in and helped her loosen up and show he she doesn’t have to be alone
