Fun fact, by the time that aired Supergirl was still airing on CBS (I think) but it was clear that it will be taken over by the CW for S2 so that way they introduced her into the arrowverse. I love them two together

With Supergirl airing on a different network (CBS) than the rest of the Arrowverse (CW), it was difficult to work around scheduling. Supergirl filmed in LA during Season 1, while the rest of the shows film in Canada. Having Supergirl be on a different Earth was their way of trying to make it work. And having Supergirl set on a different Earth opens up the concept of the multiverse, rather than it just being an abstract thing where the people don't "matter". We care about the people on Supergirl's Earth, too. The multiverse feels more "real".
