really like these reactions! i live and have spent my entire life in a place with no death penalty (australia) but also comparatively less serial killers than the US due to us having like 10% of people (but also no guns). i think the US is an anomaly compared to other western nations (canada, uk, new zealand, the eu etc) as i believe none of those have the death penalty. i personally believe that death is less of a punishment than being trapped in a cage with little to no freedom and therefore the murderers/rapists of a society should be forced to live out the rest of their lives uncomfortably. i also don't believe in the "eye for an eye" argument, which may be a bit naive but oh well. however, i do recognise that if i had a family/friend murdered, my feelings might be different. i can completely see why some victims family members may feel more in pain having the person that ruined their life alive. and i can't say that my feelings wouldn't change if i had to go though that. either way, its a really nuanced discussion.
