Blog: U-Force vs. Power Glove (08/06/21 - 08/10/21) (Patreon)

Friday (08/06/21) - U-Force Intro Preview!
Before getting to Part 2, I wanted to clean up and nail down the introduction. Have a look for yourself (For some reason, Patreon won't let you embed videos in posts. So you'll have to click the link!). I wanted this to set the stage for the video, introduce our interviewee (Dave Capper), and show how the technology is even used today.
Music is extremely important when making a video. In fact, I picked out the music for the introduction first before editing the video. Sometimes you just find the perfect track and you have to use it.
Saturday (08/07/21) - Power Glove Enters the Chat
I officially started editing Part 2 today. The beginning of this section talks about the rivalry between the U-Force and the Power Glove. I actually didn't own a Power Glove to shoot b-roll, so I had to order one off eBay. It was an expensive prop! But I'm happy with the results. I got some great shots.
As I predicted, this editing is going much faster than Part 1. I just have a lot of footage I can use to fill in parts. Tomorrow, I'll be diving into all the manufacturing issues Broderbund ran into with the U-Force. That means we are opening up the device again!
Sunday (08/08/21) - The Hinge
I opened up my spare U-Force again to get footage of the hinge. Everyone I interviewed for this project said the hinge was the biggest headache during manufacturing. They just couldn't come up with a great way to get the U-Force to snap into different positions.
I actually removed the hinge when I filmed the emitters/detectors last week. So today, I had to reconstruct the hinge. It was a huge pain in the butt. The brass washer fell out of the hot glue and it was hard to get it to stay in place. Luckily, it was able to hang in there long enough for me to get some footage.
I'm about halfway done with editing for Part 2!
Monday (08/09/21) - We Interrupt This Editing...
...to bring you a magazine from Japan! This is an exclusive interview with Hiroshi Yamauchi and is one of the first times Nintendo publicly announced details on the Super Famicom. It was, oddly, in an adult men's magazine called TOUCH. I needed this interview for my Super Mario World episode. With the magazine in my grasp, I can finally continue working on this project!
I actually ordered this magazine back in June, but the seller, unfortunately, canceled the transaction. Luckily, my friends at Japan Retro Direct were able to find me a copy and send it over. Thanks, guys! If you ever need import games, they are the place to go. #NotSponsored #IPaidForThisMagazine #JustLikeTheStore
Tuesday (08/10/21) - Title Cards!
I decided to nail down the title cards today. These are what introduce each part in the U-Force video. I had a lot of great quotes I wanted to put into the video, but there wasn't really a great place to use them. So I thought it would be cool if they introduced each part.
For the background, I recorded the U-Force straight on and deepened the black to hide the lens and imperfections. The U-Force screens are VERY reflective and show dirt very easily.
I also had Jetpackbraggin trace the U-Force logos so we could incorporate them into the titles. They turned out great!
I think by the end of next week, this video will be very close to completion. Until next time!
