I wanted to do a little essay on luck in the art industry, so I started working on this in my break. I only just finished it, I hope it's of some use to someone!

also let me know if im full of shit, or let me know if this is worth spreading around XD I really feel out of my depth making a comic about actual information, but atleast I had tons of fun doing it! and the art turned out really good X)

enjoy!

you can find the comic here too in higher resolution and for easier download if you so wish: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14_yThz64laHr0RCsKNDwHLmBz5kK3OxI?usp=sharing

Damn, this is a very explanatory handbook of real, practical advice. I dont draw anymore, but its grounded in the material reality facing all emerging artists. ❤ Almost makes me want to draw again and use this as a reminder of what to set my goals at. Love your art

Anonymous

This is nice and makes your stuff even more interesting

Patrick McGuire

Thank you for this! I found the section on Motivation very relevant as a music student who finds it very difficult to practice. I will certainly give your advice a try!!

raymond lane

i like the talking funkybun in comic, should make more comic with ya in it

Anonymous

I'm not typically one to re-read material, but I've consistently gone back for another read of some of your comics to experience them again (especially Holiday Lounge). Keep the great stuff coming, Funkybun!

Anonymous

thank you so so much for this - I really needed to hear it and I really hope you publish it somewhere so I can send it to all my friends <3

Anonymous

Thanks so much oml I needed something like this to help me keep pushing to make art. Hope I can get a bit of a following someday

Anonymous

It shows who's here for the funnies and who's here for the actual art rather than say just porn in this case, or just cute stuff on other ppl's pages. Very valuable stats tho, since I've noticed most ppl who appreciate the art are artists themselves, so there's a good way to expand your viewings. Anyways regardless of that, whether you do the stuff you want or the stuff the public wants, your art is great. Literally any character you draw ever looks so squishable, as in, i have an urge to be the weird grandma and squeeze their cheeks. Truly, one of a kind artist, and you will always be remembered as such. Thanks for letting us see your stuff.

Thank you for sharing this. To this non-artist it's a thought provoking read. I think we all like to think we are aware of the person behind the art but this gave me new insight into quite how much mental and emotional effort you put into your work before you even start to draw. I'm really glad that you are able to make a sustainable living doing something that you so clearly love. You create beautiful stories with vivid, relatable characters and just the wholesomest smut - the world is a better place for you and your art!

Azrael

Can't wait for this to be publicly available so I can shove it in all my artist friends' faces.

Nisp

I liked the point you made about a part of art being emotion really stuck out to me the most, Your art does a amazing job of immersing me into the situations and settings you build and tell, truly makes it artwork that I always find myself looking back to!

Dyal

I dont draw but I do make jewelry and alot of this information is very useful for all forms of art. Especially the bit about emotions. It can be really hard to put emotion into artistic works but iv found personally, that if a design or peice produces a strong vibe no matter what that vibe is, even if it's not your vibe. That is the universe telling you make this design for whoever it's absolutely perfect for. Even if you don't meet this person until they walk up to your booth and buy it.

Othello

I liked your stuff on generating motivation. Will try that next time I get it in my head to take another crack at art.

SenGrisane

This is a wonderful writeup (and drawup?). Information packaged together with your lovely drawings :3 And while I am not a professional, what you said rings very true to me. When you talk of don't dilute your art, I immediately knew that was something I do XD

Izzy

fucking spread this message everywhere. focusing on what people care about, and more importantly WHY they care about it, is super important for building an audience for ANY content creator. and of course it's also important to strike a balance between pleasing your audience and working on stuff you care about and believe in, but all around yeah this sounds spot on and should be shouted to the heavens lol

Anonymous

Thank you so much for making this, especially when I needed this most! Self-doubt is a powerful thing. Also, LOOK AT IT.

Stoker Bramwell

This might be the best comic you've ever made. And considering how much I love basically every other comic you've ever made, that is saying something!

Dawn

biggest takeaway from this - LOOK AT IT. taking that mantra with me from now on

Mia Valentine

This is really beautiful and interesting. And accurate on a lot if not all points. I still wanna know what the concept for that helmet thing was! So many questions, it got me hooked immediately. T_T

Anonymous

Take inspiration and run with it. Do not stop! Even if it is bad draw, draw, draw! The good stuff will come eventually.

a1e20

This was pretty good, Your Funkesty. This might actually get me back into drawing stuff

funkybun

I hope it works out!! for me it definately was a realization that I can only do work out of the blue if its a spur of the moment idea. but as soon as I think about it too long, I need that time to prepare, to overcome a wall of hesitance

funkybun

thankyou!! and you already can share this, its made public on patreon here too. it doesnt have any nsfw stuff in it ;D but I will go post this on other platforms later

funkybun

haha thankyou XD but a good thing to remember is that you are your own audience too. I write what appeals to me, and thus it appeals to others.

funkybun

thankyou so much! yeah I figured this is one of the most mentally taxing jobs there is by how people talk about being just fine doing 8 hours a day. heck you do this at a fast speed for 4 hours then your brain is fried XD but I also picked this job because its the biggest most fun challenge for me personally, the rabbit hole of things to learn is endless

funkybun

you already can! this is a public release on here too since its all sfw. but I was just waiting before I spread it to a way larger audience.

funkybun

thankyou!! in a way the art market is nothing but emotions. pieces of art are inherrently worthless as products

funkybun

absolutely! though for me I am my own audience, and will generally just design to what I like, I think with things like jewelry its smart to expand over all ranges of interests as long as one piece sticks to one specific interest

funkybun

well goodluck!! I hope you make something you can be proud of! :D:D

funkybun

when I wrote that, I was thinking of that loss meme. thats some of the most amazing mixed up marketing ive seen XD but yeah, if you are working towards honest feelings in art, then you should not dilute it with a joke for instance. but the same goes for any specific feeling you are trying to create. if you wanna create a new feeling, its probably best to create a new product with that too, so its seperate X) thankyou for the kind words too btw!

funkybun

you are also your own audience! but its good to remember when something pleases you because you are an artist, or when it pleases you because it hits your feelings! I definately dont make any concessions in my art, everything I make is made for me X) but thankyou for the kind words! I will definately spread this around

funkybun

look at it!! >:D (its true though, I couldnt have drawn that horse without looking at a horse, those drawings above it are accurate to what my brain knows about horses) and thankyouu!

funkybun

you'd be surprised how many artists feel like they cant do that. theres some idea going around that you are not a true artist if you take reference, or copy stuff. how are you supposed to know what anything looks like if you dont look at it?!! XD I sure don't know how to draw a horse, so those above drawings are a real representation of what my mind remembered, and the below drawing is me using reference.

funkybun

thats a clear example for a narrative hook, but also a seed of an idea XD you can very easily come up with many different stories that lead to this point, its probably somewhere in the genre of horror/thriller. what I thought out is not that much, its somewhere inbetween "theres already people on mars, and theres some sinister plan going on" or "something is causing halucinations or anomolies and are after the astronauts"

funkybun

thats definately true too! experience doesnt come from making something thats 100%, it comes from making things that are 70% over and over and over. before you know it, that 70% of your abilities is wayyy past the 100% you couldve done originally

Acratin

Funky, this is absolute fantastic and absolutely beautiful. I'm not a visual artist, but rather auditory and literary with mine. Everything you had to say about motivation and marketing is just as applicable to those forms as it is to the visual. A lot of the expertise is as well, of course! Thank you for doing this. It's brought a lot of lovely thought and plenty of smiles to my face as well. It was also rather fascinating seeing different degrees of detail at points. I absolutely loved the detailed portrait of you on page 12. It's fantastic work!

Richard Adam

Funny thing is I use similar techniques in photography. It really is about capturing a moment in time that people can connect with. I can’t wait to see what you put out next.

Daniel Drew

Brilliantly put together! 👏👏👏👏🙌

Parrik

This is great! You got it down and I'd love to show this to a friend who lost their motivation for art Will you release it publicly?

Tygepc

This is fantastic and so true! Those last few pages were excellent and spot on! Thank you for making this. You rock.

Scappo

THis couldn't have come at a better time. I've been having serious doubts about my art and the way I run my business and this is EXACTLY what I needed to read! Thank you. Seriously. In particular, the line, "Design your work to have the most impact" hit like a ton of bricks... Also "Your art's marketing is more valuable than your expertise." That one hit especially hard as I've been doing this stuff for over a decade now and my growth has stagnated and I couldn't figure out why! I think my marketing might have something to do with it. I'll be referring to this comic a LOT in the future if you don't mind <3.

Even as someone with no artistic skill, this was a very interesting read. For me it's about finding the time and motivation to learn the basics so I can even get started making the things I want to make one day. Seeing all the amazing work people put their heart and soul into, I'm constantly reminded that most of these creators started drawing many years or decades ago, potentially even having had a formal education. Meanwhile I spent my school life school life slacking off and young adulthood almost too depressed to function. Now that I'm finally starting to find myself, I feel like I've been 'left behind' so to speak. But I realize that I need to get over myself and start putting in work to learn the skills I want to have instead of wasting my time with self-loathing, thus furthering the apparent gap between me and 'everyone else'. Sometimes I wish I was just a cat or something and wouldn't have to care about anything lol. Anyway, thank you for the educational comic. I'll be sure to keep it in mind if I ever make any significant advances in art.

Kujiiro

Really nice comic! Forcing myself to actually stick to a schedule of art, and DO it, when I never feel like doing it, has always been my biggest hurdle.

Anonymous

Honestly thank you for this.

Totoroben

Work has been difficult for me, but hopefully I can get back into art stuff

So cute!!
