This week's Die Shrink will shake things up by inviting on an anonymous Micro Center Employee to discuss:

  • What it's like to work in Computer Retail
  • How informed the average shopper is
  • How important rumors are to people that work at these companies
  • The current health of the market
  • Misconceptions people have regarding retailers and their employees

Tom talks to a few people at Micro Center regularly as a part of his sales leaks, but this should be an exciting change of pace to have on someone who will be somewhat public about it.  He is an enthusiast too - ask us absolutely anything related to the bullet points above, recent/upcoming releases, and anything you think of!  He'll probably have an opinion on it!

Do retail workers in places like Microcenter often get asked questions by shoppers about upcoming products and whether they should hold off or upgrade later? Is it something you are likely to suggest if it makes sense for the given buyer?

What's the typical balance for a PC builder employee between upselling and giving advice on a build because of potential bottlenecks?

What has been the most frequent reason for GPU returns? What is the process for checking quality and reselling these? How difficult has it been to resell GPUs? I remember one employee actively discouraging purchasing from the used cage

Why are you not able to explain to enough customers why they need 4070ti and 4080 GPUs?

How often do you find customers are set on buying products from a specific brand, and for those customers, how difficult is it to change their mind to purchase a better product from a different brand?

During the pandemic, we've seen high prices and low stock. But with the pandemic (sorta) over, there have been lots of rumors of companies intentionally reducing supply so prices remain high. In your experience in dealing with inventory, would you say this is accurate?

Hello Anonymous Micro Center employee. I saw a lot of laptop deals during the last few weeks. Is this just a temporary thing or are the prices of laptops finally getting lower?

What's the general public perception of Nvidia or AMD cards? What comments do you hear most about them?

I'm a MicroCenter customer. I have been in sales too, I find your people knowledgeable and experienced about technology and consumer electronics. Over the last several years new product launches have become events. Do you get caught up in the excitement? What emerging technologies excitement you?

Hi Anonymous Microcenter employee, As an older gamer, I grew up with the older brick and mortar stores like Radio Shack, Circuit City, and Fry's. All are now either dead or somewhat undead. I feel like there are diverging models for retail now- either the Best Buy model of the store being more of a showroom with a more limited selection at the store to push people online or to have a larger selection in the store with a more limited shipping selection as Microcenter or several regional stores do. What are your feelings about this friction between these philosophies and how might they impact the future of retail electronics? I also heard that Microcenter is expanding out soon. Congrats on getting to a few more out there!
