I've had a very different problem with Android Auto. It's blocked in my country. I can install it manually from the APK, and then it's fully translated, and no other country speaks my language, yet it's unavailable in the Google Play store. If I don't update it myself regularly some other thing on the phone gets updated and Android Auto stops working.

Re: smartphone integration, ironically the worst experience I had as an android user was when I rented a BMW. A point of frustration I have is with non touchscreen implementations of the UI. My wife owns a mazda and their system is just terrible. I also can't stand Acura's weird touchpad thing. If you're going to have basically a big tablet in the dash, put it within reach, make it a touchscreen. I will say as "mass market" brands, Hyundai/Kia have excellent smartphone integration.
