There were a lot of expectations regarding what the 6700 XT would ultimately be. Some thought it would be too weak, others were sure $479 would be way too much no matter the performance.

So I want to ask all of you - what is your early impression after the 6700 XT reveal?

Please answer this question with the assumption that it will have ok availability (compared to recent launches). In other words, assume it won't be easy to get, but it is gettable if you try. Assume many models will be around $500, and AIB should top out at ~$580 at most if not coming from scalpers.

Oh, and feel free to comment about your opinion below. I am not going to treat all of this as reader mail, but me and Dan will discuss it tonight when we record Broken Silicon 90.

Given current market, AMD should push up MSRPs

kjm015

I'll be impressed if I can actually buy one.

Robojim

Ideally this would have come in about 400 or 425 but realistically I don't see why not price higher when vanilla 3060s are selling for 550+.

Anonymous

The price sucks.

Anonymous

I still don't think there is anything worth upgrading my wife's RX 580 from, not that she's complaining anyways lol

Anonymous

It's priced right for the current market. Even a 3060 is hard to get at this price and this thing is a shit load better.

Athena Azuraea

Overpriced as usual IMO. AMD is chasing nVidia's ridiculous prices.

Anonymous

Assuming that AMD’s performance claims vs 3060Ti and 3070 hold true, Navi 22 seems to be a home run. In my opinion, it should cost $450 because AMD *still* has not reached feature parity with Nvidia.

Anonymous

Not impressed, I think it is okay value there, it is fair I think. I guess current market conditions make it hard to appreciate fairly priced products. I would still like to see AMD push the boundaries of performance with this one.

Anonymous

I hate the market. I'm sure the card will be good for the majority of gamers, but the real pricing (because I assume MSRP won't matter) will make it look as stupid as every other GPU release in this generation. This coming from a 6800 owner, but only because I sold my used 5700 XT for over $900. I never would have bought a card in this generation without being able to nearly double my performance for a few bucks by selling my old card.

Viglius

I hate the market conditions but think the card is not awful.

Anonymous

I was expecting the 6700XT to be around $350-$400 based on speculation until the most recent MLID videos. Pleasantly surprised it can compete better than a 3060ti at 1440p as I was expecting it to be on par with the 3060ti. Still, I was able to acquire a 3060ti for $475 total and that competes with the 6700XT’s base MSRP. If AIB cards can be OC’d as well as we expect, then paying $550-ish for 1440p raster performance better than a 3070 is pretty cool. $550 may be too low for what will be charged by AIBs though. Still glad I’m on a 3060ti for three reasons: 1. I was able to acquire it cheaper 2. It’s about the limit before my 4.7ghz i7-6700k bottlenecks the GPU 3. I don’t currently have to worry about whether RT breaks the card performance because there is a DLSS option now that RT is an option for me.

Anonymous

Performance seems to be normal gen over gen improvement (20-30% over a 5700xt by my conservative estimate), which seems to be less normal as time goes on... Price wise I am disappointed about the jump over the $400 5700xt, but I understand. Comparisons between this and the 3060 Ti/ 3070 are almost pointless because demand says anything sells, and AMD gains nothing by selling it at a cheaper price.

TSPCFS

Overall, I would say it is a great product at and around it’s MSRP **in the current market** but in a normal market, it would be terrible. Hence why I “average” it out myself. To being an okay product. I also think that Nvidia’s bizarre performance v. MSRP of this gen makes this part stand out more. The 3060ti basically looks to essentially give you the same gaming performance as the 3070. So the 6700XT both looks okay/good versus the 3070, or bad/terrible versus the 3060ti. (based on AMDs numbers).

Anonymous

Given the name and rumored specs, I expected it to be around 20-30% better than the 5700 xt. Assuming AMD’s performance numbers are representative across most games, that seems to be where it’s at (without SAM enabled). I think the price is a bit high considering the 5700 xt was a 400$ launch iirc and 20-30% more performance for 80$ (20%) more isn’t terribly exciting. But hey if you have a 1070 or 1070 ti and can manage to get this at MSRP, it’s not terrible. Just would want to see better performance for the same or lower price, but that’s asking a lot of the current market.

Xerox PARC

Yeah if it was $50 cheaper I'd be interested.

Eleriam

I honestly hoped for a performance match of the 2080 Ti, with 12 GB of VRAM. Slightly disappointed. It's not anywhere close to the 6800 like the 3060 Ti is close to the 3070!

Nola Owl

Short term they could do it and pad the war chest. However if they are able to keep up with supply with this card could put a dent in nvidia market share. If they switch enough lines to this GPU lower the price a little really put a dent in market share. Of course this is all just it's and maybes dependant on supply and if amd wants to make profit on bulk sales or margin.

Anonymous

Makes sense with how things are this year.

Eleriam

Same here, also sold my 5700 XT for a 6800, before bots were snatching them all up.

Anonymous

This card fits all of the criteria I am seeking for my RX580 upgrade, all except for price that is. If AMD continued their last gen pricing it would have been an enticing deal, but even then I would have waited for a sale.

Anonymous

Seems fair compared to a 1070 launch. Still selling cards with passport identification would be helpful to fulfill the demand on the market equally. If I needed a GPU now, paying up to 700€ would be alright, when you can actually buy this card at local store.

Anonymous

I voted "its OKish" based solely on the market climate we're in. Honestly though they are technically beating nvidia price / performance but again they need their answer to dlss to make this a winner in the eyes of the general consumer that really thinks ray tracing is viable at this level of gpu.

Anonymous

I rated it OK-ish, but I think every release in the 6000 series with all its attendant stock and pricing issues is just making it even more tempting to simply wait for RDNA 3. I feel that's going to be the real deal with great drivers and and answer to DLSS. I didn't ever believe they'd announce a hotly anticipated flagship feature with anything less than a flagship GPU and that ship has already sailed for the 6000 series. I do see them launch FFX SR with RDNA 3 and have it also work on 6000 series. I'd rather they took their time with it and made it rock solid.

Anonymous

It's fine. It's priced to the market. It is not the $400 card I was looking for, but they also pushed it a bit faster. However priced so close to the 3070, ignoring availability, it makes it a tough sell for me. You reported weird issues with the 6800 XT in certain productivity applications. Whereas I would not be worried about the 3070's drivers, it would just work. There is a LOT of value in that.

Anonymous

The whole GPU market is just a snooze fest for me. It's an alright card, but there's nothing exciting and cool that is at a price that puts it as a reasonable stretch.

Anonymous

It is fine with me when I can get a reference model from AMD direct. I paid the same price for my Nitro+ 5700XT SE in 2019. If I get one on launch day. I can sell one of my gpus rx 480 8gb for $300+, or my Vega 64 reference edition for $500+, and keep the 5700XT until its going for $600 on ebay. The AIB 6700XT's will be the OC variety and cost $200+ more than SEP. AMD has brought the heat to the 3070 in gaming performance.

Anonymous

By the time it hits the Canadian market it will be close to what I could have bought a 2080 for 2 years ago. Not terribly impressed and ultimately not enough power for my 100hz ultrawide.

Brad Medlin

It’s an interesting product but I don’t think the product will stay in shelves long enough to maintain that price

MelodicWarrior

I feel that given where the performance is natively, I would have liked to see it closer to $450. That would have been way more digestible in my book. My reason for that price point is because it would have meant that effectively you are getting a mid-range card that is very capable of 1440p high refresh rate gameplay with the ability to dabble in 4K 75FPS+ as well as do some additional work in the backround. It is nice to see AMD is taking the whole launch more seriously overall. Based off prior knowledge I had in the retail space, I do think AMD will stand a better chance of getting the cards in the hands of actual gamers. This is because they will do better at keeping retail partners up to date on current supply flow. I believe this launch will give them the much needed boost in mind share with retailers, if they truly do play the cards correctly. Nvidia the last 3 launches has failed drastically in this regard. So AMD probably has a golden opportunity here.

Spied MLiS on today's episode of LTT.

Anonymous

Let's be honest, for the current market the pricing is understandable, they could of pushed it further if they wanted to.

The Immortal Cameraman

I've been saying the 6700 XT would be within 10% of a 2080Ti (90-95%, specifically) in performance while costing between $449 and $499. $479 seemed to be the logical choice given the $579 MSRP of the 6800. And I was right. This is what vindication feels like, and my patience shall be rewarded with the purchase of the reference 6700 XT.

Anonymous

I have mixed feelings on it. Given the current environment for graphics cards, it's reasonable pricing for the performance. The 12GB of memory gives it a boost over the NV cards, and it's not a completely insane MSRP given what cards are currently going for. With that said, the price/performance compared to the 5700XT for a generational jump is pretty godawful. AMD isn't the budget brand anymore, and they're pricing their products like that. It's not all bad, but it's not good. I'm just going to have to see how well AMD is doing at reigning in their AIB partners pricing for this card. They didn't do anything for the rest of the 6series and the pricing showed.

Anonymous

AMD is chasing the insane amount of money that consumers have shown that they're willing to pay for cards. It's a price bump, but in comparison to what people are willing to pay for cards, it's negligible.

Anonymous

Its a great product, but lets be real...the pricing is this high because of Nvidia and market demand. These cards should be closer to $400. I would have liked to have seen one at closer to $350 with the high end version at 400-420. I'm Cdn so this will end up being a $700 card.

Jeremy Lamb

I think the product is ok. In a normal market this price would be too high and should be around $400. Great product but for the price I would rather just go up to a 6800.

Anonymous

If you can purchase it near MSRP it is a good deal in the current market.

Meritorius

Of course everyone would've loved it being less expensive, especially as their dlss competitor isn't out yet and it's competing with the 3070, however it being available on AMDs website for msrp kind of redeems it.

Anonymous

It's basically like the 3060 of AMD, seems it's going to be 25%-ish improvement over the 5700 XT for 20% price hike. Just another side-grade in the midrange, >:(

Meritorius

People could buy the 6800/xt, too, at least in the first 1.5-2 months. This'll probably be the same or better.

Anonymous

Have we really gotten to the point where we are accepting that $500 is getting you a "mid-range" card? What the blazes has this world come to? My R9 380 4G still performs acceptably well on most games and that was significantly less than $500. If $500 is midrange, PC gaming is heading for some dark times indeed...

Anonymous

Sort of depends on your point of comparison. Assuming you can get this card if try moderately hard as a normal person, it will probably be the best card out there. But I can't help but worry that the days of truly decent mid-range $300-$350 cards are gone forever. If it lives up to the performance hype, I would have been fine with $399, I guess, but I'm just so burned out on this whole deal that I don't know I can even be rational anymore.

Anonymous

I'll just pretend the extra money is going to R&D instead of executive payouts and we'll have some sweet features/products coming in the future.

Anonymous

Looks good on paper, too early to say otherwise

Anonymous

needs to be about 50$ cheaper imo.

Anonymous

This world has come to NV 90 class GPUs selling for an average price of $2500 on Ebay. That is what consumers are willing to pay for cards. This is less than 1/5 the price of that. People have voted with their pocketbooks and we're having to pay the literal price for it.

matthew saltzberg

I guess the nomenclature of the 6700 XT supposed to be the successor to the 5700 XT. shouldn't it be $400 then.

Anonymous

Everyone see that Linus put Tom’s 6700xt tweet in his video

Cleansweep

Unless Crypto implodes this year and this card plummets in price, me and everyone else looking to upgrade from a GTX 970 and older GPU are priced out of midrange GPUs outside of the super cheap 3060 SKUs.

Frank van de Pol

If its really faster than a 3070 with unbiased reviews I'm impressed.

Anonymous

I feel the performance is good for the price concidering the way things are today. This does not make me change my mind though, I am still going to wait for RNDA 3 to release and get one of those cards, I am glad to see the new features now and it makes me really excited to get an RDNA 3 card.

Anonymous

price is ridiculous compared to 5700XT launch price in the same performance tier

Mican Andrews

The idea that midrange is 500 makes me sick. To me and alot of my friends, pc gaming is dead until further notice. I'm just lucky I got a ps5 when sony randomly put up pre-order.

Eleriam

Yeah but for most of us, we have a) a very large games library that would be crazy to turn our back to, and b) PC-exclusive games that we play often (Europa Universalis IV comes to mind).

Type2501

I am neither impressed or disappointed, just a bit sad that the reasonable mid-range is gone in this gen, our reference of price are now based on Nvidia's unrelastic MSRP. And people keep buying whatever they can at ludicrous price, as if their life depends on it. I am a cheap person and refuse to buy stuff I do not absolutely need. So I would give the 6700xt a hard pass bacuse I just can't justify paying $500 when my Vega 64 is okay at 4k video editing, I just have to give up playing my favorite game in VR.

Raziel

This is probably not going to be a very popular point of view, but I think it's overpriced. My main issue is that the specs is not that far off the specs of the PS5 GPU, 36 CUs vs 40 CUs and clocked slightly higher. The PS5 digital edition is $399 and that's a complete system. Sony obviously gets additional revenue from services and games sold, but even taking that into consideration, I feel like this card should have a similar $399 price point. If this card offered a DLSS2 equivalent my stance would probably be different, but as it stands the card feels like it should be a 'great value for money' card, but the price doesn't reflect that.

Anonymous

Given the current market, $480 makes sense. If/when availability returns to "normal" (whatever that really is) I'd hope for something like this to come down a lot closer to $350 - but chances are that's not this year.

Srei

Disregarding availability, $100 for 50% more compute units makes the 6800 look like a deal and the 6700 XT a cash-grab in comparison. However, this is without considering tariffs and demand. I don't blame AMD for the modest markup, but I'd rather get a PS5 and Demon's Souls than this card.

Anonymous

Oh, I realise that - but I strongly suspect it wouldn't have been $479 for this level of card were it not for the bonkers retail landscape - where Nvidia's RTX 3060, with "MSRP" $330, is selling (if you can get it) for $500. Given that "competitive landscape" it would make no sense for AMD to sell for $400, let alone the $350 I personally would be much happier paying, and just give away the extra margin to the retailers and scalpers. They did the sensible thing and priced it for the market it is releasing in to, so they can make some of that extra margin themselves. And good luck to them with that - hopefully they make a boat load of money to keep up the R&D and stay competitive with Nvidia and Intel.

Anonymous

It's not horrible, but $480 is too much in my opinion.

Anonymous

Does Nvidia and AMD even care about people in not the wealthiest countries? They can't afford $400-500 GPUs!

Anonymous

PC VR NEEDS high-performance mid-range cards asap! Like something 2080 Ti level for $250. And CPUs like 5800X for $250. How can developers push VR otherwise? They can't obviously!

Anonymous

20-30% is not really 'normal'. If you look at graphics cards performance improvements since the first video card in 1982, they were much higher than 20-30% every year until quite recently.

Benni_Berlin

According to Tom's Hardware, the 2014 released GTX 970 offers the best fps per dollar ratio in 2021 - dunno whether I should laugh or cry...

Hugsy Malone

It's bang on what I expected in everything except clock speed. Man that card clocks high!

Anonymous

Like many of you, I am lamenting the by-gone days of high-end cards being $500. When I did my first build in 2011, I got a GTX 580 for about $500 and it was (I think) the fastest gfx card I could buy.

Anonymous

Was trying to get a 3080 FE at launch. Won my 6700 XT in the Newegg shuffle. So after 6 months of chasing bots. I’m happy. I got it for MSRP 479. A great upgrade over my 2060 super for 1440p.
