Happy Friday Everyone!

In a couple days I will be having on an anonymous Low Latency Developer that specializes in Financial Trading servers.  These are the guys that work as hard as possible to get servers close to trading centers in order to execute trades faster than the competition, and with 100% reliability (ideally).   Discussion points include:

  • His early PC Gaming Days (he loves PC hardware, and won a Folding@Home competition)
  • The amount of "crunch" required in coding - there's a lot of it in this type of work specifically.
  • Comparing low latency trading programing to game coding.
  • Difficulties in switching between Intel & AMD servers
  • The general server and gaming hardware market.

Questions received by Sunday Evening will be considered.  However, please ensure you use good grammar, and be as concise and insightful as possible.  Make it easy for us, put thought into it, and we may just read it during the show!

Otherwise have a nice weekend!  I got a 6800XT review to write!

For high frequency trading, is core count/clockspeed more important than bandwidth? In other words, in environments like cloud, DDR5 and PCIe 5/CXL are poised to be gamechangers-how much do you see these technologies affecting what you do?

What has to be sacrificed to achieve low latency, reliable low latency... How do you test for reliable low latency performance, fire baptisms aside. How do you deal with marketing b.s (I mean the b.s spewed by your own marketing wonks) and communicate your products actual capabilities to a client?

How do you make the PC go brrrrrrrrrr. A real question, what are your thoughts on PCIe 6.0 using quaternary (4 bits possible) over the traditional binary? Thanks for coming on the show and helping us learn more about the technology industry!

A few years ago people were paying 5 digits USD for the fastest binned Xeon to get the best edge in getting your trades transactioned ahead or on par with other traders and brokers. With the ongoing stall at 14nm for Intel, do you know what these players have been upgrading to? Did anyone switch to AMD yet?

When does it make sense for a company to switch from a general-purpose CPU to a custom-built ASIC?

Question 1: When the software that you run all the servers on get updates that require a restart; how does that effect the systems supported? Is it more of a small delay in processing as you wait for all the serves to come back online OR is it a more of a rolling update where you constantly have servers talking to each-other and the updates going on sequentially? Question 2: what are the pros and cons for AMD servers and Intel servers in your profession that you have taken notice of?

1) Do you see the little cores in Intel’s Alder Lake BIG.little architecture handling hardware interrupts, so the BIG cores can carry on with harder work? 2) With processor onboard cache sizes growing ever larger how has this altered the design of your low latency solutions, if at all? 3) We’ve seen Razor’s 8,000hz polling mouse cause huge stutters in certain game titles, NVIDIA reflex expose certain graphics options impact on latency and tools like LatencyTop, DPC Checker & LatencyMon help curb background apps. What do you think we’ll be tackling in the next 3-5 years as monitor refresh rates increase and latency is more visible? 4) The first round of DDR5 sticks in the news show a large nanosecond latency due to the CAS Latency despite the increase in frequency. Do you feel this is a temporary measure or something more permanent due to the higher frequencies and mandatory ECC? Do you feel this will post additional design issues in your industry?

Is there any reasons not to go with AMD if you are a new trading company setting up a brand new server?

What do you do regarding ISPs? How do you choose them and in what way can they be a bottleneck to you?

Hi, Tom and our guest this week. Forgive me to be a bit greedy and ask 2 question at once. 1. Could you explain where is the main source of latency and instability within the system you have to duel with, and what had been done to handle that? 2. What do you think other developer (games, api, video editing software...etc) could benefit the most by learning from the work you are doing? Thank you Tom for your hardwork, your access to guest with different background and expertise never fail to surprise me. Best wishes to you and out guest.

What could be done to lower latency for game streaming services? If we want to move to 120+ Hz gaming (especially VR), it's necessary to lower latency.

Hello and thank you for being the guest this week. I know that the financial markets are on the bleeding edge when it comes to network latency and trying to cut it, but I'm unaware of where the current "bottleneck" is when it comes to fiber latency. Could you explain where fiber is stuck at and what is being done to overcome the latency there? To build off of that question, how much of that technology do you see trickling down to consumer tech to improve game latency for game streaming and what do you see as the primary challenge in that market? Again, thank you for your time and for being the guest this week.

What do you do on the operating system level? Do you run Linux with the low-latency or real-time kernels, or a hard real-time OS? Are there any challenges programming for soft real-time environments besides just optimizing for latency?

Hello Tom and Mr. Programmer, I am Pissed that with my hardware(5900X, 3080, 2TB of GEN4 NVMe RAID0, etc.) the PS5 SSD controller makes it obsolete or at least it does things the PCMR just can't right now. 1 little F--KIN' chip!!!! My question is can those functions be replicated in software? I want to see crazy effects like the Ratchet and Clank demo on PC. Will we see this soon or will devs continue to chase the lowest common denominator and hold us back. They don't need every dime from the backwaters of Brazil!!! (No offense Brazillians "Te Amo") Thank you for your time,
