You guys voted, and it was clear - you want us to talk about games more in future Die Shrinks.  Upon seeing this request we immediately knew the first game we spoke about just had to be Demon's Souls.  This was truly a game that stole our hearts with its atmosphere, level design, and boss battles.

But it wasn't just us - it was a sleeper hit that arguably spawned an entire sub-genre of action RPGs, and propelled an unknown "Game Planner" to become the President of a Software Company.  Yet despite its legendary status...many missed it, and thus we discuss why those who did should reconsider if they "really need to play that one."  Personally Dan and I could not imagine having missed this game...

Hope you all enjoy!

Just started playing Dark Souls for the first time, with some friends that have played before. Great timing for this die shrink for me (and great timing to become a patron [finally])

The player as a boss concept was also done in Dark Souls 3 The Ringed City and it was really cool

My favorite game of all times is definately System Shock 2 - the audio messages you got... oO I remember being 16-ish in my room at night, having goose bumps listening to the one and only Shodan! :-)

I played ICO on PS2 with my mother when I was in middle school when it came out and we had alot of fun. Great game and got her interested in video games. I wish ICO was on PC

I've had Demon's Souls on my shelf for 10 years and never got around to playing it. I'm now torn between busting it out or waiting for the PS5 version.

I am hoping that eventually Demon Souls Remake will come to PC. I would not care about the price to play this masterpiece. I am a big fan of all From Software games related to dark souls vision, bloodborne and sekiro were pretty good too.

2021-12-04 22:58:41 Its surreal how I almost had the same experience finding this game through IGN and also bouth the game twice. So I`ve been playing RPGs since D&D on Intellivision, Moria, Wizardry, Eye of the beholder you name it, its my favourite genre with also all major JRPGs but mostly turnbased was my passion, so I used to go to IGN (back when they didnt suck), sort by RPGs and ratings every 6th month to see I never missed any good RPG and I saw this DemonSouls with the insane rating, so I checked it out and it looked wierd, almost bad graphics and action RPG so I skipped it and got something else. Next time i came back I saw it again and was like man i just gotta get this to be sure I`m not missing out (nobody I knew had ever played it), I got it and my world changed! (you probably noticed my avatar is the maiden but in a made-up gameboy version of the game) As you descibe the levelingsystem is soo good and when you "get it" it could never work turnbased but has to be realtime. Its my favourite game of the series but I have played them all multiple times and basically always have one version "going" I cant imagine a life without it. Its worth playing through the DarkSouls remaster on PS4 due to the enhancing and it also is almost a perfect game (and you can cheese it by being pyromancer if you just wanna rush through it). So yeah I bought DemonSouls twice, but just because I wanted it digital, and I borrowed my physical version to a friend and he got stuck halfway through and I my character was way past him so I had to start from scratch and quickly level up, getting to the grim reaper and farming souls (missing sleep and dinners in the process), but it turnes out - you cant play together - it registers the games as different games so there is no way to summon eachother, the sign never appears lol. Well so yeah basically the lore, the leveldesign (with shortcuts) the feeling that the world has a history - moss on the stones, ruins etc. the fact that a weak enemy can kill you anytime in the game but also the opposite - you can go endgame with one of the first weapons and this is true in all the serie which is very cool. “This isn’t dignified. Don’t rely on the gross factor to portray an undead dragon. Can’t you instead try to convey the deep sorrow of a magnificent beast doomed to a slow and possibly endless descent into ruin?” - Hidetaka Miyazaki to a designer during creation of DarkSouls yeah you dont get any slack working under that guy and it shows in the games!

So usually these games launch in Japan first, right? Because of that I usually plan out my build on the wiki before the US version releases. When I saw Dark Souls had Pyromancy, that seemed to not require any set skill - I immediately decided to build a High-HP build that focused on Pyro. Using Iron Flesh in the first month of the game was so hilariously OP! Eventually though I actually leveled that character into a Strength-Magic LVL 300 build that was just nuts. I wore full Black Iron armor with the Boar's Mask and wielded the Demon Great Axe with lvl75 Strength...while being able to fire 4x Chrystal Soul spear with lvl50 magic if they ran away after realizing I could 1-hit most people with my imbued axe. What a blast from the past :)

2021-12-04 22:58:40 Yeah you can do some crazy builds. I love playing as a spellsword, I think its because the contradiction isnt usually allowed since it makes no sense in D&D rules (you could basically never do this until like Oblivion), some may say its cheating but it fits my playstyle to chip off a little health and then rush in for the kill, or just go berserk with the sword if i feel like. And its hilarious that the punished magic-users in DS2 (especially the expansion) it felt like 90% of the enemies was magic resistand, I actually had to respec into a melee at the first time I met the Samurai boss, and then respec back after him - only time ever I had to do that (but they give you the possibillity so). And the messaging - isnt it before the epic long dragon battle when you have to drop down a little hole and then eventually come to that fight - and on the floor someone puts: "are you ready for this?" and based on your current situation or even just state of mind and general feeling at the moment your like "um maybe I have to find a save or explore something else" or your like "eh - fuck it" and just go for it. So if the remake is atleast not crap, then one of the biggest things will be new servers and an active community, there have so often been empty in the game nowdays, no messages, bloodstaines etc..(and you never get a real player as the old monk anymore) so if its playable - it also elongates the possibillity to play the game as intended with the community, seeing others a ghosts etc. makes you feel not alone and is a huge part of the atmosphere for me. I gotta say the only thing I wish they changed was the farming of the lizzards and just copy the way its done in DS where you can reload and the lizzard will reapear, its a nightmare to get like both the best Moon-based weapon and the stickybow, and not because its hard but because the mechanics are so dodgy. Great times awaits - Umbasa!
