When Tom & Dan got into gaming – it seemed like displays were doubling in quality at the same price points every 5 years. Yet here we are in 2020, and it really doesn’t seem that much better than 2015. We talk about our memory of this arms race, and when this stalling of resolutions will end.

At $180, I would get this IPS 1080p over a $300 TN 144Hz 1440p:

I'm in 2 minds about your opinions on 1440 p. I think I do agree that 1440 p is a stop gap for manufactures to use low intensity production to make 1440 p monitors instead of equivalently priced 4k ones. As someone whos has invested into 3 1440p monitors, I view the limit of my bias as how but hurt I can get over the gains of 4k. I think its safe to say if I only played games or used my pc on 1 or 2 monitors, I would go in all the way on 4k and probably 8k. That being said, and know how much you hate cherry picked use cases there are 3 things that I do regularly that can not easily be done in 4k.

I switch from 2560 1440 to 3 triple Mon wide for games and movies via eyefinity all the time. The fps in the driving, flight and strategy and mech games that I play stays at 30 fps on 4k and can usually hold at least 60 on 1440p. Project cars 2 or mech warrior 5 super wide feels like the cockpit. This is argument however is handicapped because it is only a matter of time until 4k can do the same tasks at the same fps with the only real difference being that, I already have them ( 1440p) . The only other real specific issue that I have with 4k over 1440 is general eye strain. 4k looks too good for reading textbooks and general web work to me. In videos it does sometimes approach the uncanny valley but overall, I hate to agree with you cause .. it sucks when you are right.

Gamers definitely want to be milked lmfao

For me it's just literally never been worth it...outside of special deals (Remember I do have 1x1440p monitor I got for $80). Most of the time though a 1440p monitor is 70-90% more expensive than an equivalent quality 1080p monitor, and I legitimately don't think it looks twice as good. Meanwhile a 4K monitor is usually only a bit more than double the price of a 1080p, and I do think it looks at least twice as good - and it can last you 6-10 years like it has Dan btw. It's not that 1440p is some evil resolution in my eyes, it's that almost any time I look it's closer to a 4K monitor price than a 1080p monitor price...and that's ridiculous. Again - you don't have to agree with me, but I do ask that everyone acknowledges my points.

Michael Costa

37:25, I have to disagree. Everything after that and you gotta pretty solid case .

Michael Costa

44:34. yeah get to it, wash your hands. But 600 ish for 32 inch 4k 144hz ips is very acceptable because the amazon refurbs of those monitors are going run about 450 and all your losing is a cardboard box. With those numbers, making a simulation setup becomes viable for a much wider audience. Especially if those 600 dollar monitors are 500 in this Xmas.

MooresLawIsDead

Yeah before the end of 2021 there will be a massive monitor upgrade for me. But that's how I have always done it - massive screen upgrades every 4-6 years.

My question got answered! And before I've had a chance to go get a monitor yet. Yeah, I should have made the part about price/budget a bit clearer. The monitor was not set as part of my overall build budget. I was just planning to spend around $200-300 on one, but was curious if you had a standard range of % of build price that made sense for a monitor. I get why you would prefer to phrase/look at it differently. Essentially the debate came down to budget 1440p 144hz VA panel (mainly looking at options from MSI and AOC) or a nicer 1080p 144hz, possibly IPS, for less. I think your points make a lot of sense. I'm going to go with a 1080p for now and wait until pricing is more reasonable to make a bigger jump to 4k or an OLED TV. Afterall, I've got a 1080p now so I can't miss what I don't have.

MooresLawIsDead

Well first of all, yes - 99% of reader mails eventually get answered. I just save them for discussions that make sense. And yeah that's kinda another point I maybe should have said about waiting - if you already have a monitor better than 1080p60.... I think just wait. You won't miss won't you don't have, and again if some insane monitors come out in 6 months... You will be much more blown away if you wait for those.

MyNameIsCrease

I know. haha I just kept searching for it in every episode. My current monitor is 1080p60, it's from my old PC I built back in 2014. So I still want to upgrade for now, but I think it makes more sense to grab the cheaper option for now. I'm selling my old build to a friend for $200, so that will cover the 27" model of the AOC model you recommended in the description. Then I'll use my current monitor as a secondary for the time being.

MooresLawIsDead

Yeah my advice is actually to look for Chinese and SK monitors on eBay. There are some 17.3" 1440p120Hz IPS options for around $180, and some other decent options as well.

I don't really want to increase my monitor size (24") if I go to a higher resolution because I think the whole point is to increase pixel density. That doesn't really work if they're spread around a larger area. I sit fairly close to my screen and a larger monitor would make me have to scan around too much to see the whole screen. I've been looking around, though, and there are very few 24/25 inch monitors available with resolutions higher than 1080p. There are some office monitors, but they're no good for gaming. The ones I have seen are really expensive. More so than larger screens hi res screens. You are right, the whole monitor industry has been frozen in time for half a decade.

SteveBoxTM

Idk why everyone talks about CRT for older games. For me my old Plasma TV has been unbeatable in lower res retro games. Have not tried my new OLED C1 for my gamecube yet though and will need to check it out.
