Perhaps this comment is a little late, but I do recall there was one clear thing that made me start hating games from the PS3 / 360 generation: loading times. The screens I most remember from this generation are the menus of the Playstation 3. Netplay was terrible, matchmaking was completely awful for a vast majority of games. The games looked better, but it felt like an infinitely inferior experience compared to PS2 / PS3 games to me. Even worse if you compared it to some Dreamcast games, those got rid of almost all loading altogether. When it came time to the PS4 era I just gave up on console gaming due to the 40+ GB patches. I didn't have time to wait hours for the game to update to pick up where I left off, it became ridiculous. I think it's a huge that still needs to be worked out. A lot of people are not playing new games because they're hard or annoying to access compared to something you could play some years ago.

My apologies, I meant compared to PS2 / PS1 games

I feel like loading times are better now though. With SSD's (that you can put in a PS4 too) games are substantially less annoying than they used to be. I think it got especially bad at the end of last gen too (ever play a Fallout game on console?! Horrible!). Supposedly next gen makes loading times a thing of the past though :).

I believe the monetization of games has taken away from the quality of games. An argument could be made for the WAY in which that monetization is implemented, but overall l, I feel my interest in gaming has been waned dramatically because of this. Games aren't what they were, but there are certainly stand-out examples of the contrary such as The Witcher 3.
