~~Chapter 4: Parenting &  Friendship~~

.

It wasn’t.

Living with a twenty-six year old woman who was mentally six years old wasn’t  easy….at all.

“HAARRRYYY!!!”

And to think he was just waking up.

Daphne came rushing from her room down the hallway, which Harry had given her last night, and dashed in through the doorway, jumping on Harry’s bed.

“Hey, hey, hey-oof!” Harry dodged the hyperactive girl, who was now sitting on his bed with a big smile on her face.

“GOOD MORNING HAARRRRYY!!” Daphne greeted him, both arms raised in the air.

“Morning, Daphne, slept well?” He asked as he slowly sat up and yawned.

“Yep, your bed was soft! It felt as if I was sleeping on clouds!” Daphne told him excitedly, making the boy smile.

“Good, I am glad. Now, I think you’re hungry?” He asked her and got a nod in return.

So Harry told her to wait downstairs while he freshened up, and then he'd cook something for breakfast.

Daphne nodded and left the room, while Harry went to the bathroom to refresh himself and start his day.

.

“So, what do you want for breakfast?” Harry asked the girl who was sitting on the island that was near the gas stove, dangling her legs while humming a tune and looking around.

“Sweet Rolls!!”

“Eh? I meant for breakfast.”

Daphne bobbed her head in agreement. “Yes, I want Sweet Rolls for breakfast.”

Harry’s left eyebrow twitched a bit, but he shook his head. “You can’t have sweet rolls for breakfast; you need something nutritious...hmm let me think about it.”

“No, I want Sweet Rolls! C’mon Harry, it’s my first day here and you’re denying the first thing I asked you?”

Harry looked at her and saw the legendary blue puppy dog eyes with that small pout. He was about to agree when his mind went back into healer mode and he recalled that Breakfast was one of the most important foods of the day and that it needed to be more nutritious than sweet rolls.

“Alright, I’m making a sweet roll.” He said and started making the batter for pancakes.

“Harry?”

“Yeah?”

“I wanted to know, what do all these huge metal things do?” She asked, pointing towards the chimney, the oven, the dishwasher, and the fridge.

Harry looked around and shrugged.

“They are like permanent charms, but they run on electricity, and we can modify the level of their effectiveness.” He told her, confusing her even more.

To simplify it, the wizard pointed towards the fridge that was placed in the corner. “You can see that? That thing has a permanent freezing charm in it, so it can keep anything cold. Though the muggles don’t have magic, they have something called electricity, and that is the thing that makes these things work.”

Daphne made an ‘o’ face and hummed in understanding.

“These things don’t work on magic, though, and therefore react badly when they come in contact with magic.”

“Oh! That’s why we don’t have them in our kitchen.” Daphne told him with a glint of understanding in her bright blue eyes, smiling when Harry nodded and started warming up the fry pan for making the pancakes.

Daphne started asking him questions about the different appliances in the house; she was particularly fascinated by the television and the radio. Harry could see that she was just being curious, but her mind was definitely more intelligent. ‘If Greengrass was like this when she was six years old, then I can definitely see why she choose to become an Unspeakable.’

.

“I hate you.”

No, you don’t.”

“Yes! Yes, I do!”

“No, you don’t.”

‘Hmph!’ “Bad Harry…not doing what he says.”

Harry just rolled his eyes as he looked at the girl walking beside him. She was walking with a small frown on her face and looking straight ahead, trying her best to look angry, upset, disappointed, and hurt all at the same time.

Reason? Rather than baking those nutritionless sugary delights, Harry cooked pancakes instead. And Daphne had made a ruckus about not eating a single thing till he baked a sweet roll for her.

Well, he hadn't, and Daphne had to eat the pancakes. He knew she had loved those; it was impossible not to know that with the speed she had cleaned the plate and had immediately asked for another one. She still refused to agree that he had done the right thing.

“You are nothing compared to Maisy; she’s the best!!” Daphne said and started running ahead.

And she had decided to call his cooking skills second grade compared to those of her house elf, Maisy. Harry just laughed it off and told her that she was just being meanie because he hadn’t let her have a sweet-roll.

Currently, they were going shopping for Daphne because all she had was one hospital gown that she had been wearing and a pair of clothes that she actually brought into the hospital.

Harry was sure that the hospital crew was changing her gown, but he didn’t have anything with him. That was why they were going shopping.

Entering the shopping mall that was in muggle London, Harry took Daphne straight to the women's section, ignoring her gasps of surprise at all the things they could see. He didn't want to waste time any more than necessary because there was a big reason that might expose them.

Harry had transfigured her clothes for now so that people wouldn’t start suspecting anything if they saw a woman in a hospital gown, but he wasn’t sure exactly when the transfiguration might come undone and her baby blue frock revert back to a pastel green hospital gown.

“Hello, sir, how may I help you?” The female assistant asked him with a small smile plastered on her face.

“Errr…I need…uhh a full wardrobe for her.” He told her, pointing towards Daphne, who was standing behind him.

The woman was confused as she looked behind him. “I am sorry, sir, who?”

“This woman, the one standing behind-” And he turned to point at Daphne, “-me….Daphne?” Unfortunately, said woman wasn’t there, and Harry was the only one standing in front of the confused salesgirl, who was still looking at him with the same smile, though the smile looked a bit awkward now.

.

“Daphne?! Where are you?”

“Miss Greengrass?...Daphnee???!”

“Let’s go to the intercom, Mr. Potter. I don’t think we’ll be able to find her this way. We’ve been calling out to her for the past fifteen minutes. I am sure it’ll be easier if we announce her name on the intercom and ask anyone who has seen her to bring her to us.” The sales girl told him, and Harry nodded his head.

He still didn't know where Daphne was, and the salesgirl wasn't leaving him alone; that was why he wasn’t able to look for her through the ‘point me’ charm.

The few times he had used it, it had led them to the kid’s section, which was three floors below the women’s section. He still didn’t know how the woman had found her way to the kid’s section in a place she hadn’t visited even once.

“Let’s go. I still don’t know where she could have gone or if she is here anymore, but this is the only way, right?” Harry asked the salesgirl, who hummed in agreement and started moving towards where the management room was.

Harry sighed helplessly, giving a last look to the kid’s section. He was about to turn and follow the girl when his eyes caught something. He squinted a bit and tried to make out the person who was standing a few meters away from him with their back towards him.

There she was, strawberry blonde hair falling down in waves reaching her lower back, standing in the same baby-blue long frock that Harry had transfigured for her, eyeing one of the games.

“Daphne?”

Daphne turned her head and blinked as she looked at him. “Haarrryy!!” And with that, she ran towards him.

Harry had only a few seconds to prepare himself before the blonde-haired missile smashed into him, hugging the life out of him.

“Ugh..Da-Daphne! What are you doing?” Harry wheezed out and felt the constriction loosen up a bit. She might be a kid mentally, but her physique and therefore her strength were still those of an adult.

Slowly, Harry extricated himself and asked her what she was doing here and how she ended up here, of all places.

“I-I saw the toy part when we were going towards the dress part. I then looked at the statue lady wearing a beautiful dress, and when I looked back, you were not there. I tried calling you, but by then you had left. Then I asked for the toy part from another aunty like the one behind you, and she brought me here.”

Harry’s face went through several changes when he heard the small tale. “Statue lady?”

“Yes, there were many in the dress section, each wearing a beautiful dress.” Daphne bobbed her head earnestly.

“Maybe your friend is trying to say mannequins, sir?”

Harry turned to look at the salesgirl who had been helping him search for Daphne. He thanked her and awkwardly apologized to her for all the trouble; she just waved it away with a smile and asked him if he was still going to buy an entire wardrobe.

“Yes, but before that, I think someone needs to learn a lesson.” He said and looked at Daphne, who was still looking at the game that she was eying a few minutes ago. On being called out, she looked at Harry and blinked owlishly. “Huh? Me??”

Only after he felt that Daphne had been sufficiently scolded and got a promise from her that she wouldn’t run off anywhere before telling him, did he let go. They were about to move towards the women’s section again when Daphne started pulling Harry towards the game.

“Daphne! Leave me….why are you pulling me?” Harry asked her, and he was actually surprised by her strength.

“I have to show you something.” And with that, she pulled him more towards the game.

.

“.....”

“Please Harry?”

“...”

“Pleeeasssseeee???”

“No.”

“Wha-..Harry! Please? I’ll be a good girl, I promise! I won’t wander off either, please buy this for me? Please?” Daphne asked him again with the same big blue eyes.

Sadly, she wasn’t his eight-year-old godson, and therefore the charm was totally ineffective. “I don’t know why you want that bunny plushie, but I am not buying it for you.” Harry told her and started moving away from the ‘grab the soft toy’ game.

“PLLLLEEEEAAASSEEE!!!” Daphne tried to pull Harry towards the game, but he didn’t relent. “I want the bunny!! She’ll be the queen of my favorite story!!”

Harry just shook his head and slowly dragged her to the stairs. “I’ll buy you another bunny toy; that’s a fraud game; I don’t think I’ll be able to win on the first try, and I am not going to waste more money than the bunny’s real cost just to win it.”

“Noooo….I want that bunny only! Only that bunny could be the Bunny Queen; no other bunny!” She whined some more.

Harry just looked at the girl who was sitting on the floor, trying to pull him towards the stupid fraud game. “Alright, I’ll give you three tries, and if you don’t win it, then we’ll forget about this.”

Daphne immediately got up and ran towards the game with a big grin on her face. How hard could it be? She was sure that she'd be able to get the bunny on her first attempt. ‘Maybe I’ll win another soft toy for Harry too..but which one?

.

“No laughing.”

Harry laughed even harder at that. They were leaving the shopping mall, and they had a full wardrobe for Daphne, including winter clothes, because it was October, and he was pretty sure that by the end of the month, she would start needing them.

There were a few more things that he had bought for her that were useful for women. The sales lady had been exceptionally helpful and hadn’t asked a single question as to why he was buying everything, going so far as to say that she was happy that Harry was asking for help rather than buying things he might not know about.

The reason for Harry's laughter was that Daphne had failed the game; she had then asked for two more tries and had proceeded to fail again. Then they had finished up the shopping, and she had bowed back to a welcome mannequin robot, thinking that it was bowing to her.

“I won’t talk to you!” Daphne huffed and started running away from him.

“Hey! Come back here!” Harry shouted, trying to handle all the bags. He still needed to shrink and pocket them, but sadly, he hadn’t been able to find a safe location for that yet. He relaxed a bit when Daphne stopped running, but she was still walking a few feet away from him, making him jog a bit till he reached her.

“Can you stop a bit? These are heavy.” Harry told the woman, who just kept on walking while looking the other way.

“Ah, c'mon, it was funny; you have to agree.” Harry told her, trying to hide his smile at the woman’s childish behavior, that he knew he shouldn’t laugh at her, considering she was mentally stuck in the 1980s, the time when welcome robot mannequins were definitely not on the market yet.

“Ah, okay, okay, I am sorry. I shouldn’t have laughed, forgive me? Please?” Harry sighed in relief when she finally stopped and turned around.

He immediately tried to prevent his laughter from erupting again, thinking about anything but that moment.

“Hmmm…okay, but I think someone needs to learn a lesson.” Daphne nodded her head and gave an evil smile when she saw fear creep onto Harry’s face.

“A….A lesson?”

.

It was five in the evening when they safely reached home. All of Daphne’s new clothes were in Harry’s pockets. He had done that in an alley so that no one could suspect them. Then, as a punishment, Harry had to treat her to a muggle restaurant.

Currently, Daphne was busy licking ice cream in her either hand. The ice cream was muggle-made, therefore without the permanent freeze charms. So, it was melting down her forearms and soiling her sleeves.

“Thank you, Harry! I’m going to watch some TV now.” She told him and was about to go to her room when she felt him grab her shoulder and turn her to face him.

“Come here. Messy woman.”

“I am a girl!” She told him and gave a small pout.

Harry simply rolled his eyes and conjured a handkerchief. He slowly started wiping all of the ice cream that was around her lips and on her chin, and he didn’t know when or how, but there was some on her nose too.

“You should learn to eat from your mouth, not your chin, cheeks, or nose.” He told her, checking around to see if there was any other place that he had missed.

“But this is how you should eat ice cream, not my fault you’re uncultured, Harry.” She said again, pretending to be a princess talking down to a peasant.

Harry just raised his right eyebrow and smiled at her while shaking his head. Daphne, on the other hand, imagined Harry in a royal green female gown with an eagle hat on his head and a snake-skin purse. She completed her imagination by applying make-up to his face and began laughing.

“What’s so funny?” Harry asked her, taking the two melted ice creams from her hands and placing them in a container.

“I just imagined you as my mother.” She told him and began laughing more.

“Yo…your what NOW?!”

“My Mother!!” Daphne told him loudly before laughing out loud as she sprinted away from Harry, who was trying to grab her.

“You can’t catch me, old man!” Daphne laughed, dodging another of his attempts to grab her.

“OLD MAN? I am in my Twenties THANK YOU-UGH-VERY MUCH! And STAY STILL!!” Harry was happy that Daphne was enjoying her stay here; he smiled when he heard her bell-like laughter as she tried to run away from him.

.

For the rest of the evening, Harry proceeded to give the woman a crash course about all the muggle appliances in his house.

She was especially amazed by the TV and the Fridge. After all was done, Harry helped her settle down in her room, and they filled the closet with her clothes and other accessories that they had brought from the mall.

At night, after finishing their dinner, Harry went to wash the dishes while Daphne went to bed; surprisingly enough, she came back quite soon.

“Harry?”

Harry turned his head and looked at the woman, who was rubbing her eyes in her baby blue sleepwear.

“What happened, Daph?”

“I can’t sleep. Maisy used to read me some bedtime stories; can you read me a story too?” She asked him. He raised both his eyebrows before shaking his head.

“I’m sorry. I don’t have any storybooks here. How did you sleep in the hospital, then? And what about yesterday?” Harry asked the girl, who shrugged and mumbled something inaudible.

“What?”

“How come you don’t have a single story book in all of those thick tomes?”

He just shrugged as he thought about all his medical books and journals. “They are all work-related. I am sure you won’t be able to understand any of it.”

“Even the nurse lady used to tell me a story that she told her kids; you don’t know a single story, Harry?”

Harry rubbed the back of his head before shrugging again. “I was never interested in stories, so I don’t have any story books. Can you please try to sleep without a story today? I’ll definitely buy you a few books tomorrow on my way back from work. Which one is your favorite?”

Daphne grinned at him “Oh, you’ll love it. I am sure it’ll be your favorite too.”

Harry didn’t have a nice feeling about it, but he still asked the title of the book, and although it might not be his favorite or anywhere close, his face was definitely red when he went to bed that night.

.

The next day, Harry woke Daphne up and told her that he had taken a leave yesterday on account of buying new things for her and helping her settle down in a new home for the time being, and that he would leave for work every day at 8:45 in the morning and be back before 8 in the evening.

Harry also introduced her to Prongs. She was amazed and tried to hug the patronus, only for her arms to pass through the semi-solid figure. He told her that if he was ever late due to work, he'd send a message through prongs so that she wouldn’t get worried.

The main thing he told her was that she should stay in the house at all times, which meant she could do anything from draw in her books to watch TV, dance to the songs on the huge radio, or munch on snacks. What she wasn’t allowed to do was open the door for anyone.

Harry told her that he would open the door with his key when he came, but she wasn’t allowed to open the door from inside. Daphne immediately agreed, and they finished up their breakfast.

.

“Be a good boy, Teddy. I’ll be back in an hour.”

“But why can’t I visit Harry’s house with you?” Teddy asked his gramma, who was going to Harry’s home ten minutes early, to give him a portion of her homemade pie. It wasn’t a regular thing, but Andy had made it a routine to give a portion of pie to Harry whenever she baked it.

Why? Simple really, it was his favorite.

“Because you have to finish the homework you got from school, and you’ll be too tired to do it if you visit Harry’s home first.”

“But how? We’d just apparate, give Harry the yummy pie, and apparate back, right?” Teddy knew ‘how’ but he wasn’t going to admit it.

“We both know you won’t stay still once you reach Harry’s house. That man spoils you rotten, so be a good boy and finish up your work. I’ll be back soon, and then we’ll have dinner.” Andromeda told him and watched as he gave a sad nod before dragging his feet along the wooden floor on his way to his room.

“And walk properly; no dragging your feet!” She called out and smiled when she heard a muffled ‘YES, GRAMMA!’ from behind the door.

.

Reaching Harry’s home, Andy checked the time and nodded, ‘Quarter-to-eight, it’s still ten minutes before Harry comes. I'll have enough time to start working on dinner while he refreshes himself. Now, where is that key…?

Andromeda pulled out the spare key that Harry had given her for emergencies and opened the door. She had just entered the house when she heard someone humming a song to themselves.

“Who’s there?”

Andromeda immediately flicked her wand out and stalked towards the closed door. The humming had stopped, and it was eerily quiet now. She stood close to the door and was about to open it when she heard some rustling on the other side.

Her eyes widened as the worst-case scenarios started coming to her mind, from death eaters to thieves. From muggle murderers to magical assassins waiting for Harry Potter to come and kill him.

Not being able to bear the loss of another member of her already small family, there was now only one goal in her mind- To eliminate whoever was on the other side of the door.

She thanked her lucky stars that she hadn’t brought Teddy with her today. Finally, mustering enough courage, she took a deep breath and threw a quick “Alohomora” to the door, which she flung open.

Stupefy!

.

Harry sighed in relief as he finally saw the outline of his home. The day had been tiring; he had been working non-stop the whole day. The sixty or so patients that had been waiting yesterday were given today's date too. Ergo, he had to work twice as hard as usual.

Along with that was the discussion that he had with Lamming and Edward. The mind healer was of the opinion that if this didn’t work and her health deteriorated, then they would have to finally call the Department of Mysteries in an emergency meeting through the minister’s notice and discuss Daphne’s case with them.

Harry was adamant that  Daphne was safe and there wasn’t even a single thing in the entire world that could harm the woman; she was in his home and…no one could…enter his…home…

The man-who-won ran towards his house when he saw the main gate was open. He didn’t know how someone had been able to enter without the security wards notifying him about the intrusion but if they were here, then Daphne might be in trouble, he needed to-

“HAARRRYYYYY! PLEASE SAVE MEEEE!”

Dropping his small briefcase on the threshold, Harry flicked his wand in his hand and ran towards the living room, which was the place through which Daphne’s scream had come.

Harry entered the room with the protego on his lips but paused as he watched the scene unfold in front of him.

The entirety of his living room was a mess. The carpet had been pulled out, the sofa set was torn at places with the foam and spring popping out of it, and his vase and other collectible items were thrown around, completely smashed to smithereens with the water and the flowers spilling out.

All in all, the room looked more like a battlefield than a living room.

Comically enough, Daphne was ducked behind the sofa set, looking fearfully at Andromeda, who was a few meters away from the terrified woman with a confused frown on her face and  her wand pointed at the blonde woman.

“Wh-what’s going on here?” Harry asked, breaking the silence and garnering the attention of the two women in the house.

“H-HA…HAAARRRYYY!!!!” Daphne literally left everything as she ran towards the confused boy, who only got a fraction of a second to prepare himself for the blonde-haired missile that crashed into him, making him go ‘Omph’ with pain.

“Hey-Hey Daph, hey, what happened? Why are you crying?” Harry asked as he patted the woman’s head in a reassuring manner while she had her face in his chest and was wailing loudly.

He looked at Andromeda, who was still standing where she had been, with the same confused frown on her face, although it had deepened considerably as she watched the scene unfold in front of her eyes.

“Daph….” Harry patted and rubbed her back a bit as he slowly started moving towards the destroyed sofa. Finding a small place where the spring wasn’t protruding out or the fabric wasn’t torn, he sat down with the crying woman beside him.

“Andy, can you please fetch me a glass of water? Thank you.” Harry asked the elder Tonks woman, who moved towards the kitchen, to do as she was asked.

Andromeda was still confused as to who this woman was and what her relationship with Harry was. She knew that Harry would tell her everything, but it was still quite weird to see a beautiful woman in the Potter household as Harry hadn’t dated since he broke up with Ginerva Weasley, and she was sure that Harry was responsible enough to not let any random girl enter his home like this.

Taking huge gulps from the offered glass of water, Daphne told Harry everything that had happened in the past ten minutes.

How she was waiting for Harry and singing one of the songs that she liked and danced to when the door opened and Andromeda called out, ‘Who’s there’. Daphne told him that she was afraid, as he had told her that no one else who was uninvited could enter their home.

She had then locked the door and hid behind the living room door with a vase in hand to hit the intruder when Andromeda barged in and started cursing her. After that, she had been dodging the curses while the ‘bad aunty’ had been blasting and tearing things off, not listening to her pleas and demanding what she was doing in Harry’s home.

Harry sighed as the story ended, and he looked at Andromeda, who was looking down at him with her ‘You-are-going-to-tell-me-everything’ eyes. He gave a small nod before looking at Daphne and smiling.

“Daph, the ‘bad aunty’ isn’t bad; she’s our friend. She was just worried that someone with bad intentions might have trespassed on our home.” He told her, making the blonde girl glare at him.

“But I am not bad! I am Daphne, and this is Daphne’s home too! Why would I have bad inventions?”

“Intentions.” Harry corrected her, but then he focused on more important matters. “And yes, this is your home, but Mrs. Tonks didn’t know that, did she? She thought I was living all alone like usual and therefore considered you a trespasser.”

Daphne looked at Andromeda before flinching as the woman’s glare shifted from Harry to the girl. “I-I think she’s still angry, Harry. Maybe I should come later.”

Harry looked at Andromeda and gave an involuntary flinch too, before smiling awkwardly at Daphne “Why don’t you go and keep the ice cream in the freezer and check the story books I bought for you while I talk with Mrs. Tonks here?”

“You bought Icecreams and Story books?!! THANK YOU HARRY!” Daphne hugged him once before tracing her way towards Harry’s briefcase that he had dropped in the hallway. On her way out, she took one last look at Andromeda before hurriedly moving out of the room as soon as she could.

Harry smiled at the woman’s childish antics before he heard Andromeda clear her throat. He turned to look at one of the infamous Black sisters and gulped. “So….everything?”

Andromeda’s glare was the only answer he got.

.

Daphne entered the living room and was happy to see that the room was back to its pristine condition. The sofa set, pictures, vases, and carpet were all repaired, and everything was back in its rightful place.

Harry and the scary aunty were now sitting and discussing something. She knew that she should give them some more time, but she was too impatient to worry about that right now; after all, it wasn’t her fault that Harry had really gone ahead and bought her most favorite story book! No, it was entirely Harry’s fault, just like it should be!

“Harry!” Daphne announced herself, and without caring about the scary aunty who was now looking at her with raised eyebrows, Daphne skipped towards her caretaker, friend, and guardian.

“Thank you so much for bringing this one! You’ll read this one to me tonight, right?” Daphne asked him, pushing her favorite story book in Harry’s face.

“Err..yeah, you’re welcome, Daph; it’s your favorite one, right?”

“Hmm, hmm, of course it is! The best story in the entire world!” She told him, bouncing on the balls of her feet and vibrating with excitement.

“Can I see the best story in the entire world? I have a grandson who might like this story too.”

Daphne froze when she heard Andromeda’s voice ‘How could you forget about the scary aunty Daphy? Shame on you!’ she thought to herself. Still, making a brave face, she turned towards the other woman in the room.

“I..err…don’t think that’s a great idea, Daph.” Harry tried to snatch away the book, but before he could do that, Andromeda had already summoned it from Daphne's hand to her own.

Andromeda read the title of the book and simply burst out laughing; this was epic! She looked at the book’s title, then back at a confused Daphne, and then at a red-faced Harry before laughing out loud again.

Harry facepalmed as he looked at the book. Why? Oh, why did he have to buy that book? He looked at the cover image of a large bunny standing on a grassy land while a monster was fighting the hero, who had spectacles on his face and a lightning bolt scar on his forehead.

Above the image was the title of the book: ‘Harry Potter and the Bunny Monster.’

Harry groaned as Andromeda kept on laughing.
