We're off on another journey into space! It was good getting to check in with Centipeedle. I cant believe corruption blast did all that by accident! The visual of the pink legs flying through space is hilarious honestly. I don't know what to make of white diamond tbh we only got to see her for like 30 seconds!

Sput you’re spot on about the parallels between Pink’s family and Steven’s like it’s VERY intentional given that the episode is called Familiar. They both start out as bratty kids “born” into dysfunctional families that didn’t always give them the care or attention that they needed, which in turn forced them to forge their own paths. Pink running away was the inevitable consequence of her parents not acknowledging that she’s a person who exists outside the role they intended for her. Steven is forever told he needs to be like his mom when all that means is the erasure of his true self. Rose is her own gem and so is Steven. The complexity and layers to this story are so amazing once you start peeling em back and Season 1 rewatches are especially fun if you watch through the lens of Steven as Pink making mistakes and trying to grow/learn from them. It’s the classic coming of age story where in order for a child to establish their own identity, they need to be free to make their own choices. Gems are all created for a specific purpose and Pink’s role was to forever be the clown, the princess, the perfect child; her parents reprimanded her for not living up to their standards so it made her miserable. And then she found earth where she marvelled at its denizens’ ability to destroy/recreate themselves with every passing moment, the freedom that offered to someone condemned to stagnate would have been invigorating. (Put a pin in this for later 📌) The parallels are great too in that Steven and Pink start at the bottom of their family’s hierarchies, but differing parenting styles result in different outcomes. Pink is not permitted to be herself and so she eventually leaves to become her own person. Steven whose guardians offer him space to grow eventually flourishes into his own guy capable of making his own decisions . Yes the CGs are flawed but the loving environment they provide fosters his development into a kid who can then return that love and help them become better ppl too. It’s such a wonderful case study in how families can become stronger when they are cohesively learning and growing together. (Returning to that pin 📌 some of this paraphrases Sugar from the End of an Era book) The sad flipside of this though is that the Diamonds’ treatment of Pink embedded a deep self-hatred within her. She was conditioned to believe she was a failure and every mistake she makes retriggers that feeling of insecurity. We established a few eps ago that she followed the CGs because she admired them but what does that really mean? "Your Mother and Mine" [S5E13] means something very different when it turns out that the stories that Garnet has been telling which she heard from Rose were actually an awful portrait Rose was painting of herself and her own terrible behavior. "We Need to Talk" [S2E9] is full of information about how Rose feels about herself, and how desperately she needed someone to challenge her to be cognizant of her impact. Rose dreams, achingly, that she could become compassionate and loving, because she's sure she's incapable/unworthy of compassion and love. Her lack of respect for herself makes it impossible for her to respect everyone closest to her. She reveres them instead, because they are better than she could ever be, and that reverence is so honest and intoxicating that it draws everyone closer to her, without them understanding the deep self-hatred that pull is coming from. She couldn't stand herself; self-destruction is a huge theme throughout the show, the struggle of the feeling that you shouldn't exist, and what that can do to a person. A lot of the themes of the show exist within Rose, like her inability to be honest with other people or herself about what she's done. She's so deeply ashamed of herself and her past, with very good reason. The truth is that the people in her life would be so much more understanding than she believes they will be. The contempt that she has for herself gets turned outward as contempt for other people when she can't trust them. When she can't trust herself, she can't trust other people, and it makes it impossible for her to be close with anyone. It makes life extremely difficult for her. It makes living difficult for her. The show is so much about honesty and trust and being able to grow and change. Rose wants all those things so badly, but she can't really accomplish any of that until she accepts herself and she never does. It’s sad that she feels the need to reinvent herself twice to escape the self doubt, with the second reinvention being a final escape from the person she was taught to hate from the very beginning. Rose is such a beautiful complex complicated character and ironically probably the most human character in the show after Steven. I wish she had gotten the family and love she deserved from the very beginning. At least she found her own family and was able to break away from some of the generational trauma passed down to her.
