Sending probes and drones inside (seemingly) derelict ships you find in the space is the safest way to know if something dangerous its inside. However, even if there are no aliens or something like that they can always find interesting things, like a girl bound and gagged to the pilot seat for... some reason that will surely be interesting to investigate.
