Presenting another regular feature on this Patreon page, I thought it would be a neat idea to present a wealth of vintage comic book stories featuring classic cartoon characters! This might serve as an extension of the Cartoon Research posts I have written centered on animation artists who have worked on comic book stories, either moonlighting or on an exclusive basis.

Here’s an interesting story from Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies Comics #35 (September 1944)—drawn, inked and lettered by Tom McKimson, the eldest of the McKimson brothers. In it, Bugs Bunny recounts his childhood to Porky and Petunia, revealing he has a twin brother named “Slugs,” a mischievous but more destructive opposite.

A few issues later, Tom McKimson produced another story on Bugs’ youth where it is revealed his real name is “George Washington Bunny”! Could both stories be truly canonical to his on-screen counterpart? You decide.

I really appreciate you posting these - the only other way to read them is to have the original article itself!

"George Washington Bunny"? We all know his name is J. Ben Hardaway Bunny.

Wow, this is great. Thanks Devon. It's also really good reference material to look for subtleties between Tom's static images and his animated images (because after all, animation is just a bunch of still drawings threaded together :- ) ) Bugs is really a jerk in the comics!
