This show is SO GOOD! The family vibes, the crazy gay, the story. All of it. The found family was my favorite part of this show, it's really really really good, and it grows and gets so much better. The gay, we haven't even scratched the gay yet. Wen Kexing is doing his absolute best to impregnate this homeless man with his eyes. And if that doesn't work, he just recites poetry at him. Gu Xiang is my favorite character. She is the best. No exceptions. She's is the best big sister. Did you see her face and her bread clanking? That girl knows what's up. Our new Best Boy is baby. It's so hard waiting a week.

Was so excited to watch this with you! Also: even the pancakes/flatbread scene has gay subtext. Sticking two pancakes together like A-xiang did (or "tie shaobing") to mimic Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu 'fighting' is a euphonism for when two men flirt or have a close relationship. I LOVE how clever this show is.

Hoooooo boy if you’re wondering about “straight justification” NOW….. tbh at some point you just get used to it except for those moments when you remember censorship is supposed to exist and go HOW THE HELL WERE THEY ALLOWED TO AIR THAT??? You going from admiring Kexing’s beauty to those looks into the camera at the flirting/blatantly homoerotic scenes to diagnosing them with found family is honestly such a mood. Zishu was planning to drink and die alone? Too bad, here’s a husband and two kids, no takebacks. Kexing’s beauty in general is legendary. He gave me a whole sexuality crisis for a couple of episodes when I first started watching. That shot of him in the moonlight with his fan? Damn! And I saw an ace person on tumblr talk about the same thing happening to them so you know. Normal stuff. Plot-wise there’s not much to talk about in this episode. Someone else already commented that those paper things were joss paper. Its usually an indicator that Ghost Valley is involved somehow. I look forward to your reaction to the gay as it evolves!

Ah to explain the paper thingy that the ghost valley people use. In ancient China, well modern too, those papers are called 冥币 (Ming Bi) or incense paper. They are made to be burned as mourning for a deceased one. People believe that the things burned to the dead (offerings in a way) could be used in hell/underworld. Those Ming Bi is a type of "currency" that is burned from the living for the dead to use. So ghost valley people using Ming Bi as their entrance is basically saying you're dead.

Great reaction!! Yes the gay tension and found family!! Also I think if im understanding correctly, you confused Prince Jin with Zhao Jing. Prince Jin is the guy whos obsessed with finding Zhou Zishu. Zhao Jing, who they have to bring Chengling to, is a different guy, a sect leader who you havent met yet.

Not comparing the two - but I remember watching The Untamed and thinking "Wow, this is pretty blatant, good job getting it past censorship!" and then came WoH and I'm just "Is this really from China? Did the censors even WATCH this? This isn't subtle, This isn't double entendre - this is frickin' single entendre and no doubt about it!"... :D If you wanna play around with alcohol poisoning you can do a drinking game where you take a sip every time Kexing flirts with Zhou Zishu. ;) How many compliments can one man give another? A LOT, as it turns out. Also, this is the third Chinese BL drama I've watched, the second on set in "medieval fantasy time", and I will forever be unable to see two beautiful men fighting like that without thinking "FLIRTING! MATING DANCE!". The Untamed does it by moonlight, WoH does it among falling flower petals - I'm not picky, I'll take it. <3 And yes, instant gay family with best baby duckling boi! :D

This was so good! When Ah Xiang is banging the flatbread together during the flirt-fight, AvenueX says it was intentional symbolism of f**king. (She put it nicer than that). Thank you for another satisfying video. Can't wait for the next one. :-) <3

One thing I learned recently is to trust your Twitter timeline when they freak out about Chinese drama. I didn't get it when The Untamed first came out and lost a year until I realized "wangxian married with a son - canon" slapped me in the face. So I jumped into WoH right when everyone got excited. And damn, I do not regret it. This episode is one of my favourites. The creators are so shameless, this series is literal proof of how misunderstood censorship in China is. And finding out all the innuendos (you caught it just fine without the context, props to you!) is amazing and 3x the fun. Plus the fact they aren't even on first name basis and adopting a son this early in the relationship... Gong Jun being beautiful is a sin. There's no doubt about it. I read somewhere that Zhehan taught him how to flirt like that... I am not okay. But at least we have someone to blame on his charms expanding. One thing we must be greatful about this being a low budget production with almost all the original cast dropping out is that Gu Xiang's actress did not give up on it, original Wen Ke Xing stepped down to play a supporting role instead bc he decided he does not fit the character (you will find out soon enough who that is) and that we got a main duo with chemistry that is almost undescribeable. Looking forward to more of this <3 (I'm writing a paper about digressive poems and the vibe got me digressing like this, I apologize)

I love how petty A-Xu is. I mean, he's just like, well if your going to keep accusing me of that, I might as well just do it. Also, him saying all those insults and laughing... well the meaning didn't really translate well on the show, but basically he had lived a life without cursing and he suddenly learned how great it is. Chengling really is one of the best boys of the series. He tries so hard. Also, I love that between KeXing and the dying beggar guy, they choose the dying beggar guy for Chengling to get attached to and be the responsibility of. Like, it is obvious why, but it doesn't make it less funny. Wen KeXing is dramatic... just always. He's just sitting there, chilling with his fan and waiting for someone to notice him. lol Also, seriously, pretty Chinese guys and fans are becoming my aesthetic. A-Xiang is an absolute princess. She's silly and an absolute joy to watch, especially whenever she talks to or about A-Xu. As for the joss paper, the living burn them for the dead and what? did the ghosts find it ironic or something to claim to be ghosts and then throw the money back? lol I love how A-Xu is just terrible at trying to hide the fact that he is amazing at martial arts. Also, didn't it say in episode one that the nails reduced his abilities by half? Also, his sword is almost as flexible as he is.

I think the “reducing his martial arts by half” is more about strength/endurance/agility than pure technique. Can’t unlearn that. It’s probably why he had to take a break and meditate there to recover. That being said, yes, this is him at half strength. Makes you wonder just how powerful he was at his peak.

The kind of bread she's cooking over the fire, like, how the camera focuses on it? From a couple different Chinese youtube channels I learned that there is a slang term for gay men that is like "two [pancakes/that kind of flat bread] stuck together" so it's a distinctly Chinese symbolism. The director focused on it for that reason. It's subtler than...the rest of that.

Oh! I didn't realize it until this rewatch, but one of the ghost guys is about to hit Gu Xiang when the nuts hit him and knock him back. That did happen in the book. They did get sponsored by a nut company, but the walnuts are a thing in the novel, too. It's not as out of left field as it might seem.

Gong Jun's character also twirls walnuts in his hand in the BL series Advance Bravely? Do you know if that too is not a coincidence? That novel wasn't written by Priest, but by Chai Jidan. What are the odds, same actor, same nuts? Or is it such a cultural thing, like flying martial arts and falling off cliffs backwards that is so prevalent in Wuxia dramas? Asking for a friend. LOL! :-)
