[A/N: Next post will be on the 28th! ]

<<…and one of the hover ferries donated by Makuinlo Scholar City, Artona I, has been in service since yesterday. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s stunning. The vessel should be completely able to resist Submerger particles, but wizards will also be on board for every crossing to ensure safe journeys. The modifications to the second ferry will be finished soon. It’s due to be teleported in Sunday evening.

<<Thanks for listening to the morning news with us. That was our last story for today. Our extended coverage of the disaster will continue tomorrow. And we’ll be having a discussion about the proposals for the new Span. We know we’re getting a rail connection. But why stop there? How can we make it even better than before? If you have ideas, call in and let us know!

<<We’ll also hear from Doctor John Singh, who lost his home and office in the floods. He’ll be telling us how he approaches these stressful times and how you parents can explain it all to your children. Now…>>

The woman’s peppy voice was suddenly joined by the first notes of a fast-paced song.

<<We have the latest from Sona and Yodel! They’re in the middle of their world tour, but home is on their minds. They’ve decided to donate all of their profits from 2040 to the rebuilding. So you can feel great about dancing to this one, Anesidora. Happy Thanksgiving! I’m Rēśama, and this is Radio Above.>>

The chatter ended, and the cafeteria at Matadero filled with a voice singing in Punjabi. A metal tray sailed through the air, and Alden caught it.

Preserve just the tray, he thought. Flip.

The last bit of a banana peel fell into the trashcan beside him. Then he unpreserved and added the tray to one of the clean stacks on the table at his back.

“No,” Kabir was saying to whoever he’d just called. He reached for another dirty plate and tossed it gently to Alden. “I don’t understand why it’s impossible to get pre-thawed turkeys. It’s Thanksgiving. You’re a grocery store. I’m willing to pay whatever…yes, I know I should have prepared in advance for a large gathering!”

The next plate flew a little far to the left and Alden almost overturned the trash reaching for it. He managed to snag it out of the air and preserve it in the same instant.

“What about chickens?” Kabir asked in a desperate voice. “Maybe you have some very big ones?”

Alden caught another plate. They’d started in the kitchen with the worst of the dishes, and with a more verbal cleaning system where Kabir chanted “take it, take it, take it” for Alden in between searching through supplies and trying to formulate a plan.

Alden had become a connoisseur of falling food visuals over the past half hour. Watching things that looked really stuck-on fall prey to gravity all at once was satisfying. He was planning many future dish “washing” sessions with people who weren’t worried that a wizard named Momo-neen would be disappointed if there wasn’t stuffing stuffed into appropriately sized poultry.

Kabir had almost hyperventilated when the first store he’d called said cranberries were sold out, so now didn’t seem like a good time for Alden to ask for more challenging plate tosses or to spend a few extra minutes experimenting with preserving different layers of grime.

Haoyu’s going to love chucking things at me, though. And there’s dinner tonight. I bet we’ll have tons of dishes.

If a Rabbit with a dedicated dishwashing skill showed up, he would arm wrestle them for the privilege.

Kabir’s call ended, and his shoulders slumped. “I’m going to have to ask her for help.”

“Who?” Alden caught a bowl.

Bowl only. Flip.

He couldn’t resist giving one gentle toss straight up, trying to get it to hold its preservation when his hands weren’t on it.

Total failure He lost preservation and entrustment the moment he let go of it.

I only held onto Zeridee because I desperately wanted to and because I was in that too-intense headspace. I can’t desperately want to protect a cereal bowl and throw it at the same time.

“Ms. Velra,” Kabir answered. “If I call her, there will probably be turkeys falling from the sky within the hour.”

“You don’t want to ask her for help?” She was the one who’d loaned Kabir to the wizards in the first place. But his reluctance was understandable. “I don’t blame you. Considering how everything has been going with her…”

“How everything has been going with her” was the subtlest way he could refer to the situation.

Just about ten minutes ago, the radio station had played a clip of Aulia making yet another statement. This time she was calling on High Council members to prove that they weren’t SAL sympathizers trying to frame her. She also suggested a public tattooing ceremony to magically bind them to their oaths of office, conducted by wizards approved by the Artonan Grand Senate. In the past, she’d apparently run on promises that she would be willing to do that herself.

Alden thought it wasn’t half bad as far as ideas went. Why not have politicians swear unbreakable oaths to do their jobs? But the councilors were all united against it.

“I don’t want to talk to her,” Kabir said. “If I talk to her, I’ll feel too guilty to quit. I’d rather wait until I’ve received an official offer from Momo-neen so that I can’t back out.”

“Are you really going to go work for a wizard?”

“I’ve never wanted to before. But now I have an inbox full of messages from people who want to know what I know about Libra, Orpheus, magical water, and Aulia Velra. Like maybe people stand around discussing their plans to blow up Matadero while I’m mincing garlic. The woman I went on a few dates with last month called to say we shouldn’t see each other! Getting away sounds fine now. Momo-neen seems to be part of some kind of anthropology club? She said they could hire me for almost a year.”

Utensils clattered as he swept them onto the last tray and walked over to present them to Alden.

“Do you think it’s traitorous of me to abandon ship when Ms. Velra’s in trouble?” Kabir asked.

Alden was trying to pick up six forks at once, defining them as a single set in his mind. He managed it, but when he shook them, some of the food was still stuck. Hmmmmm…can’t hold a conversation and perfectly define a stack.

He dropped them back on the tray again and went for a single one. “I don’t think you’re a traitor. She’s just your boss, right?”

Kabir shook his head. “The line blurs when your boss is Aulia Velra. Most people imagine she’s horrible to work for, but she’s not. Demanding, impulsive, impossible to reason with—yes. She’ll wake you up at two o’clock in the morning to have you make cookies. Half of her family…no, more like eighty percent of…I have wanted to poison them before.”

That sounded less joking than Alden thought it should sound.

“But Ms. Velra pays very well,” said Kabir. “And she’ll wake you up to ask for ginger cookies at two o’clock in the morning, but she will also laugh with you when you burn them and tell you about the time she burned a pan full on purpose because her mother forced her to make them for the boy her parents wanted her to marry.”

“That would have been a long time ago.” Alden was struggling to imagine an Aulia who had parents trying to manage her life and choose her fiancé.

“Not many people know this kind of thing,” said Kabir. “She only talks about the time before the Artonans arrived when we’re drinking champagne in the middle of the night.”

He paused then coughed. “Non-alcoholic champagne.”

I don’t care if it was real champagne,” said Alden. “Can you imagine if that was what the authorities used as an excuse to arrest her, though?”

That prompted a sharp bark of a laugh from Kabir. “They’ll never imprison her for longer than a day. Not even if she stands on the tip of the Needle and pours a cask of whiskey on the people below her. That’s what I believe.”

Interesting. “Because of how important she is to some Artonans?”

The sounds of utensils clattering surrounded them.

“That too, maybe,” Kabir said. “But even if she wasn’t that…she’s one of the originals. Your generation doesn’t really understand them. You think that only the loud few like Aulia are still relevant and the others are all relics. That they’re all too busy working on The Triplanets or bouncing grandchildren on their knees to understand Anesidora today.”

“Remember I’m new,” Alden pointed out. “Until earlier this year Anesidora was kind of…”

A theme park. A fantasy land. That place where everyone seemed to have money, magic, and access to more of the universe than the average person could dream of.

He’d known better than that; he’d had enough glimpses to add a touch of reality to the place. But it still had been a spot on the map that was simultaneously more and less than what it was in truth.

“That’s right!” said Kabir. “I don’t know how I forgot with the accent. But my point is that the old ones are different. And they look out for each other. I’ve served meals to some people you would be surprised to know Aulia considers friends, and the things they talk about…it would take more than a few missing neighborhoods to really upset them. That’s the impression I get.”

Kabir looked down at the almost empty tray. “You’re fast.”

“This is great for me.” Alden grabbed a spoon. “You holding the tray out like you’re presenting them to me is enough right now. It’s good to know things like that.”

They were almost finished.

“America,” Kabir said. “You’re from there. There must be so many turkeys in America right now. Just lying around. But locating them and getting them teleported in…I don’t know how to do it. Most of the Artonans won’t be back until night, and the sun sets late this time of year. But it’s still not possible.”

“When I want something, I call this guy named Dragon Rabbit,” Alden offered. “He claims he can get anything.”

Another idea came to mind suddenly. “Or I could ask my friend Natalie. I’m sure she’s got a turkey.”

“I can’t take your friend’s turkey. And just one wouldn’t be enough to feed all of them.”

“Yeah, but Natalie’s turkey would be loaded with holiday spirit. Literally. She’s got Cook of the Moment. You could add little pieces of it to the sandwiches you were planning on serving before you realized what day it was and everyone would get a taste.”

“Cook of the Moment? In that case, I definitely can’t take your friend’s turkey.” But he looked interested. “I could buy it, though. If you think she would be willing to sell it?”

She’s business-minded. And she’s very interested in working on the Triplanets.

“She might be really eager to sell you the magic turkey. I can ask. Let me go call her.”

If she says yes, Emilija will never forgive me.

******

Back in his room, where his call wouldn’t be overheard by Kabir or any stray wizards, he spent a few minutes thinking about what to say so that he wouldn’t slip up and reveal some kind of critical Matadero intel and also so that Natalie would have as much of the full picture as possible.

Everyone knows the visiting Artonans come back here every night, so that’s not a secret. They have the polite fiction that they’re working on the facilities, so I won’t say anything to contradict it. But the fact that they must consume food isn’t exactly a secret either.

I literally can’t think of anything about the dining arrangements that should be kept private except for the location of the cafeteria.

And when he explained why he was here, he would use Porti-loth as an excuse again, just like he had with Haoyu and Lexi.

Planning done, he called her. She answered right away. She was standing in her kitchen, dressed in one of the chef’s jackets the students in the culinary prep program were assigned.

“Hey, Natalie,” he said. “I have a request from another chef.”

Giving her the rundown took a while, but when he got around to asking if she might be willing to part with a turkey, she said yes before he could get the whole question out of his mouth.

“Are you sure?” He watched the messy blond bun on top of her head shake as she aggressively whisked something in a large steel bowl. “You can take longer to decide if you want. Kabir is hoping your turkey will bring the meal together, but it’s not like anyone will go hungry if you say no.”

“Of course I’m sure!” Natalie beamed, and her dimple deepened. “This is so exciting, Alden. I’ve been nervous about cooking professionally for wizards for the first time. Now I’m getting a trial run! And I know the turkey should be good. Really good. I set timers so that I could wake up and use my skill on it every chance I got while it thawed. And it got plenty of doses while it cooked, too. I basted it with herb butter and with magic!”

“I bet it’s perfect and the people who taste it will love it,” said Alden, leaning forward in his chair. “About payment…the chef who wants the turkey is well-off and the person who donated the chef to Matadero is hideously wealthy and there’s got to be a generous budget for wizard-feeding on top of all that. You can name your price, and you really should because—”

“Nothing,” said Natalie. Her golden eyes had gone round with surprise. “Obviously. It’s Thanksgiving. And the Artonans came here to help.”

“Oh. But you’ve been working on it so hard. You’re positive?”

“That big bald wizard caught some of the Avowed who threatened us on Friday night. And they’re protecting the ferry that Emilija used to get here. And Cafeteria North’s serving turkey today anyway, so I don’t think anyone who comes to my dinner tonight will be that upset if we just have side dishes. They’re usually the best part anyway. Whoops!” She’d whisked too hard and something that looked like whipped cream had spattered her face.

She wiped it off her chin with the back of her hand.

That big bald wizard…

Alden bit back the urge to say he hoped those bastards Ro-den had caught with his invisible staircase spell were still crying like babies while they climbed toward the moon. As well as a simultaneous urge to describe Ro-den’s true character in unflattering detail.

Telling her he knew The Bald General was a long conversation for another day. And it would ruin the mood.

“That’s really generous of you, Natalie,” he said instead.

“What time do you need the turkey? And how do I get it to you?” she asked. “Does it need to go to the TC? Is there a place where deliveries to Matadero are gathered?”

So turkey is a go. Cube meal delivery logistics…

“Let me get back to you on that. Your food deserves a guard.”

She laughed like he’d said something hilarious.

“I’m serious,” said Alden. “It can’t go sit in some grocery pile at the TC or travel with a hungry wizard. I saw two Artonans polish off a dozen servings of trifle by themselves. Some random TC employee might catch a whiff, and the next thing you know, the turkey will be missing a drumstick. I’ll see if I can make arrangements to come get it myself.”

She was still laughing. “I’ll guard it with my big knives until you get here.”

He nodded. “And then use your big knives to guard me from Emilija and Hadiza.”

After she was gone, he sat for a while looking at the thermos Porti-loth had given him. Made in Tennessee. Such a minor detail, but he actually had to go find a cup made in the right location just to serve me potion in.

He set the mug back down and headed toward the cafeteria. On his way through the lobby of the residential area, he took a moment to appreciate all the signs of effort that he’d only glanced at on his way through earlier.

The projection screen was displaying lists of spell names. He assumed based on some of them that they were the spells that had been found useful for decontamination. There were paper funeral programs laid out on one of the tables. And when he walked over to another and looked inside a box labeled “repair these,” he saw human personal possessions. A water-damaged photo album, a broken watch, a bag full of painted shards.

And there was a honeydew melon with strange symbols drawn on it, sitting on one of the sofas. He had no clue what was going on there.

It’s not like you can tell which of them are here because they want brownie points or summoning rights and which of them came because they were worried about Avowed they’d worked with before and which are just helpful people trying to do the right thing.

But they were all working hard.

When he reached the kitchen, Kabir was slicing tomatoes while he talked to another grocery store. Alden leaned against a counter, waiting for him to finish the call. Then, he said, “I just talked to Natalie. I’m pretty sure we’ve been thinking about all of this the wrong way.”

“The Cook of the Moment won’t sell her turkey!”

“She’s giving it to the cause for free,” Alden said before a new wave of panic could strike the man. “I’ve been listening to you talk to people. You haven’t actually been telling them who you want all the food for.”

“I tried that a couple of days ago. Someone hung up on me as soon as I said Matadero. They thought it was a prank.”

“I think you should forget about cooking. I think we should start calling people we know personally and asking them if they’d like to donate a dish. For Thanksgiving. Whatever they want to share, not just North American Thanksgiving food. It would be more Anesidoran if we had all kinds of cuisines anyway.”

Kabir blinked at him. “You want to feed the wizards whatever our acquaintances have on hand? A hundred random home cooked dishes?”

“You probably know some other chefs, too, don’t you? But yeah. Potluck isn’t professional, but it feels right for the holiday.

“And a lot of people are probably grateful to some Artonan who’s helped them over the past few days. Maybe they want to show it. But it’s not easy when they’re wizards and they’re busy and they disappear to the cube whenever they take a small break. But you and I are here, and I just thought…we could make something kind of positive happen. If we worked fast.”

Kabir still looked flummoxed.

“Is it such a bad idea?” Alden didn’t think it sounded too crazy. He thought most of the Artonans he knew would like it. “I guess everyone might tell us no because of the short notice. Or they might not be confident enough to donate their cooking or something. But if we call enough people, it could happen.”

“Wouldn’t we need permission?” Kabir said.

Alden’s brows drew down. “Uh…for what?”

“I told General Esh-erdi I could handle the kitchen the last time he came by to talk to me,” Kabir said, lowering his voice to such a faint whisper that Alden had to lean toward him to hear it. “I told him he could leave it to me. A turkey from an S-rank Rabbit with a cooking skill is one thing. But what if he’s offended to see me bringing in food from all over the place that I didn’t even cook?”

“Esh-erdi?” Alden was suddenly having a hard time falling into step with Kabir’s thought process. “Esh-erdi is the last person who would be offended by something like you not personally handling every dish. He seems really protective of Avowed. Possibly overprotective. And definitely too generous.”

“He’s a very intimidating person.”

“Esh-erdi is? I mean…fair. In a way, that’s definitely true. But not in the way you mean. And you work for Aulia Velra.”

“Miss Velra doesn’t compare to an Artonan General.”

Alden had a feeling that his expression was probably a match for Kabir’s. They each clearly thought the other was being ridiculous about this.

“I’ll explain the potluck to the Hn’tyons,” Alden said, forcing maximum confidence into his voice. “And they’re going to think it’s fine. I promise.”

“How are you going to find them to talk to them?”

“If they’re not in their room, I’ll just text Esh-erdi.”

Kabir squinted at him. “Are you serious?”

“Yes,” Alden said. “I’ve talked to Esh-erdi several times. Even if they don’t like the food for some reason, they’re not going to be offended. I swear.”

He waited for the chef’s final verdict with a small and unexpected case of nerves tightening his stomach. He’d only just had the idea, and the idea was only supper. But it felt right.

It was nice to imagine Porti-loth, Lind-otta, and Esh-erdi seeing human foods made by humans who were glad they were here and knowing that people appreciated them. I could even freeze a plate for Zeridee, for when she’s off her restricted healing diet.

And Drusi-otta. She needs a plate too.

He envisioned himself fixing one, calling her name, and then watching as the food disappeared into thin air.

“All right,” said Kabir.

Alden brightened. “Really?”

“I’ll start by calling some restaurants.”

“I’ll start by calling some of my friends.”

They looked at each other.

“This will be interesting,” said Kabir.

“Do you think we’ll have enough food?” Alden asked. “We’ve left it pretty late.”

“There are always the sandwiches.”

They both nodded.

<<System,>> said Kabir, <<call Gao…>>

Alden was already calling Haoyu. Cool, he thought. This could actually be cool.

“Hi, Haoyu!” he said as soon as his roommate answered. “I thought you and your parents might like to know we’re going to have what’s probably the first ever Thanksgiving Potluck at Matadero, and we’re taking food donations from anyone who wants to offer something.”

Chapter Notes (in no particular order):

Rēśama - first mention. If I’ve looked up the translation correctly, this is the word for “silk” in Punjabi, which is her Avowed nickname. I try to be quite careful with non-English words when I use them, but languages can be tricky. If you ever see me make a mistake, let me know.

Thanksgiving - This short arc is making me hungry. I want stuffing and cranberry sauce.

I noticed someone asking last chapter why they celebrate Thanksgiving on Anesidora. Anesidora takes a “more is more” approach to holidays since their population originates from all over the globe. However, they don’t take days off work/school for everything. I think of Thanksgiving as being celebrated on Anesidora widely but not with a ton of fanfare. Lots of people eating American-style Thanksgiving foods just because, some decorations.

Naturally the people who grew up celebrating Thanksgiving find it more meaningful and do it in a bigger way. As for why they celebrate on the US date, it’s because the US-born population is significant, and they and their descendants would want to celebrate it then. I’m sure Anesidora also acknowledges the Chinese Mid-Autumn festival, which would have been back in September in 2040. They wouldn’t really have their own unique Anesidoran harvest festival date, since they’ve never been an agricultural society that would have developed a harvest tradition.

Diwali was a bigger bash than Thanksgiving. (Fireworks volley!) And Halloween was very popular because dressing up in costume is great.

Emilija - in the shower, washing her hair, dreaming of eating three servings of turkey

Haoyu - Was trimming a stain out of Alden's fluffy living room rug. Has just heard the phrase Thanksgiving Potluck at Matadero spoken for the first time in all of human history. Does not associate Matadero with potlucks. His body is strong, his will is stronger, but his mind is temporarily short-circuited.

Esh-erdi — intimidating? him?

Aulia -- Does she sense that an Artonan named Momo-neen is stealing her longtime chef? And is that more or less important than the fact that her Submerger blew up and took some chunks of her country with it?

As always, love the south Asian representation- idk if your Indian but it’s some of the best I’ve ever seen in fiction tbh

Lovely chapter! Thank you!

Potluck in the Freezing Works is gonna be a new Anesidoran tradition isn't it. In years to come people will wonder what "Thanksgiving" means as they crowd into their local abattoir for the harvest festival.

Ben Passos

Man the last few chapters have been really uh...short.

Widget

Good chapter. Was nice. Comfy. Fluffy.

Emily Gurnavage

Aw, I got too caught up and then it suddenly ended. On one hand its a great ending spot, but on the other, it feels ready to continue next sentence. Blegh, lol. Good content though. I enjoyed the festive spirit and more screen time for Kabir. Maybe after this works out fine, Alden can get Kabir to use his Avowed cook connections to help Natalie network or something. After he tastes how perfect the turkey is. Im guessing 1 more Thanksgiving chapter yet before back to business as usual.

Matt

I can't believe Alden is stealing Emilija's turkey. She tried to warn us of his thieving ways.

Loser Me

Oh god, poor Emilija... Or poor Alden for taking her dream turkey, maybe this novel would end next chapter after she's done with him.

Alden and Kabir not understanding each other is sooo funny

Alan Miller

I just came across several tabs I'd left open with variations on stuffing muffins and saved the recipes. I want sausage stuffing (well, dressing) muffins with cranberries in them and maybe some gravy.

Hooray for Soup! Beautiful Soup! Soup potluck!

Sleyca you saved my exams. I was definitely going to cave and read the chapter in the last minute revision period before entering the exam hall, but you released it earlier which avoided all of that. thank you :)

He can’t go to the dinner now, he’ll be a wanted man. Bounty and everything. Alden “Turkey Stealer” Thorn. It’s his villain arc.

Ploddingpanda

Thanks for the chapter! I'm glad you're releasing at more regular hours recently. Yay for thanksgiving! And imo duck would be a way better alternative to turkey (roasted duck yum).

Gaffer

Reminiscent of some of my favorite random-friends-over Thanksgivings, minus the part where they get drunk and start testing Matadero’s defenses

Baines

I feel like this relatively short silly chapter is going to have more impact to this story than you'd expect.

Zachary McNamara

I imagine Alden hasn't been to many potlucks himself but it's a great idea and chance to show Anesidora gratitude.

Jumping Flounder

matadero potluck. name of my metal band.

SkySeeker

I love how realistic it feels that this wonderful idea would come from Alden. In some stories, it feels like a stretch that the protagonist always has to be the one to swoop in and save the day. Here, it just felt really sweet and natural that while Kabir would have been so wrapped up in his anxieties and his mindset of what he is responsible for, Alden would have that spark of inspiration from how Natalie handled his request for Turkey.

Lee

Matadero thanksgiving potluck. Only someone as kind and wholesome as Alden will think and do this. It will probably become something Artonan and Anesidoran will celebrate annually from then on. It will also be a celebration tradition that will bring human and Artonan relations much much closer. And Alden is unintentionally screwing up Bashnor's plans and Winston will gnash his teeth in fury.

Emily Howarth

As a Canadian, I would definitely be annoyed at Anesidora for celebrating Thanksgiving on the American date

SkySeeker

I know! I thought that scene was both hilarious and realistic.

Jim

Thanksgiving soup is delicious! Thank you

Emily Howarth

Although it could just mean an extra day of turkey dinner, so nevermind, I'll just take both dates

Calibri

High stakes Thanksgiving dinner! Very slice-of-life-y, very warm, very good. And now I am very hungry even though I have already brushed my teeth and tucked into bed. Curses!

BeautifulBusinessBoi

Alden truly is a food thief this time!! Emilija and Hadiza were right to label Alden as a threat during intake lolol

Come on new S-Rank Bridge Wright! It's literally what you were created for! Don't miss out! Also, Natalie with whipped cream on her face... OMG

Poiuy

I should not have read a food chapter so late at night 😭😭😭

Spygeneer

I wonder if this is gonna lead to some weird misunderstanding among artonans about how thanksgiving usually works.

Anime Problem

This is immediately going to go viral on social media on the island and the only people who even understand what is even happening will still be confused. Like you just received a call from someone asking for Thanksgiving donations to take to the demon hunting cube for wizards I can only imagine them memes.

Kahandran

Normally I associate cliffhangers with intense action sequences, or bad news, or some other dire event that brings a main characters' survivability into question. Never before have I been cliffhangered just because I expect the next chapter to be the most heartwarming thing imaginable 😭

Kahandran

Alen Alijevic

That was a nice and wholesome chapter, honestly my favorite moments are probably just the day to day activities and Alden's interactions with friends. I miss the dorm room shenanigans

Calibri

Esh: so you give each other food offerings? Alden: no, it’s typically a family holiday Esh: oh, so you’re all one big happy family! Expressing your familial love and ability to provide for one another! Alden: …

PatienceHoney

Winston thinking... Of course Alden is only doing it for the publicity... The social media savant strikes again!

5haun

Thank you for the chapter!! This is so great. This seems like the making of a cool first Anesidoran/Artonan Thanksgiving, because this chapter felt like a wholesome version of the Independence Day movie 🍿 not first contact but still 😂

Sesharan

I feel like this idea is an encapsulation of how the Artonan relationship with their resource worlds should look. Helpful actions taken out of kindness and responsibility in a time of need, and gifts of gratitude shared in return. I think this might affect some of the Artonans more profoundly than even Alden is anticipating.

Riordan Pawley

Thanks for the soup, great addition to the potluck!

Robert Smart

Tyftc. So it’s interesting how celebrations spread. Christmas has always been a thing here. But not Halloween or Thanksgiving. But in the last decade or so suddenly Halloween is a thing. Probably about 1/4 of the population does something for it but that’s a lot more than when I was a kid where I only knew about it from tv. Not sure if Thanksgiving will ever catch on or not. I think Chinese new year will get bigger first.

ImNotHere

I love new soup when I wake up Thanks for the chapter

Lee

“I tried that a couple of days ago. Someone hung up on me as soon as I said Matadero. They thought it was a prank.” I think you meant a couple of hours instead of days since K only just learned that its Thursday Thanksgiving. Unless he was already planning to make Thanksgiving dinner the following day?

VP

There are many thanksgivings floating around, so it might just be Turkey season and some people just buy 5 turkeys at the start and eat leftovers for a whole month

Sign Dhole

I’ve never been more envious of fictional food. I want to try the Matadero thanksgiving potluck so bad.

Widget

Imagine if they figure out *Alden* is involved lol. Alden “Oh no my radishes” Thorn loses more than just radishes, resorting to donations to get enough to feed the artornans.

Lee

I think everyone on earth can understand celebrating the new year. But Thanksgiving is so rooted in American colonialism that just doesn't translate emotionally for everyone.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Ah man, if I was an S-rank cook I’d be soooo lazy Can you imagine, open a bag of chips and salsa and infuse a little magic every time you dip it Id just do that all day man And ask for like $2 a chip for anyone who walks by Id just sit outside all day eating chips and handing them out I wonder if there’s any other avowed assignment that’s so well-suited to hedonism

I would be worried for Alden's safety - but he is ensconced on Matadero and the turkey is going to feed the bald wizard (and others) ... so maybe Emiljia will calm down from her killing rage before she sees Alden again? 🫣😬

Charlie

1. This arc has taken an extremely adorable turn. EDIT: 2. Could Alden preserve a person except their skin? could he casually flay people? 3. Somewhere, there's an old S-rank with "Cook of the Moment" out in the universe who was just sent an urgent message.

Flying Goat

This chapter is riveting, and I don't even care about the details of my own Thanksgiving dinner.

Loser Me

That's just what she wants us and Alden to think- FOOD GRUDGE IS REAL PEOPLE, BEWARE! Once she thinks Alden's let his guard down, BAM! Cannibalism! Or smth more heinous even...

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Damn, Drusi-otta is so good at blending into the shadows that it has a meta-level effect on me as a reader

Garrett

I don't think Cook of the Moment works like that. I think you would actually have to cook the food yourself. Also, knowing how integrated intention and symbolism are in magic, I imagine having a strong desire to feed and satisfy the person you're cooking for probably plays a part as well.

JustMe

Poor Hadiza, poor Emilija. Alden is truly a heartless monster...maybe he is a demon after all. Winston was right. Justice for Winston

Ducktacular

Future generations of Anesidorians explaining to their kids the cultural significance of gifting food to a mythical man flying around with a sack full of casserole dishs and stuffed turkeys on his back.

Kim Enteiu

Natalie and Alden sitting in a tree saving T-H-A-N-K-S-G-I-V-I-N-G. First clean dishes, now free Turkey, then make a roommate’s brain no workie!

ouroboros

I wonder if you've inspired people to buy some all local various accoutrements while they're healing. I find myself wanting my own Alabama crafted mug made with locally sourced materials. 😆

PatienceHoney

You're right - Emiljia is crafty - and her dark arc is just beginning. Alden will forever more have to practice Constant Vigilance!

SkySeeker

Dang, that ninja-votary is doing an amazing job of being discreet! (Edit: Got me too, until you mentioned it.)

SkySeeker

After all, justice for Winston is justice for the girls in this case, so you could say that it is a "Win-Win" situation. (Cue overwrought superhero theme music)

Skull Leader

I feel like this upcoming event is going to become a run away train as soon as certain people catch wind of this... Example, say Alden calls Neha and tells her about this potluck. Suddenly every rabbit on the island is getting organized to either donate or help for the event. Not to mention how Aulia or Esh-erdi will react to this event. You want to host an potluck of the food of Earth to wizards...ok here have unlimited resources and budget! Make it happen. If I was Esh-erdi or the council you could make this a PR event, the island's first official look at Matadero. Showcasing a feast at a non-restricted area of Matadero IE the cafeteria, that would be Anesidora thanks for the Artonan's efforts. Seriously this could either be the small event that Alden wants/thinks or it can be a runaway juggernaut of an event.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Imagine being someone who doesn’t know of Alden Thorn Your old friend Kabir from culinary school calls you a few hours before Thanksgiving dinner and asks if you can donate a side dish to the Demon Slaughterhouse Thanksgiving Potluck You say ‘what?’ Half an hour later some teenager flying on the General’s green octagon comes by to pick up the dish and flies off in the direction of Matadero

Moonspike

That's exactly how Thanksgiving works in my family though. So many of us get together that there is no way to cook enough food in one kitchen.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Messing up the Informant’s dataset with all this talk about some Thanksgiving Potluck Must be some SAL code for a coordinated follow up attack

Kim Enteiu

😆 Zeridee: don’t stand out, be the Ryeh-b’t he expects you to be. Alden: sure, can you hold my orange juice? *immediately arranges the first Harvest festival holiday potluck that has ever been held at the Cube, in honor of the wizards who are visiting and helping, with all of the dishes provided by grateful avowed of their own goodwill; Esh is supremely smug to help Alden arrange delivery, knowing exactly how a party of such unrivaled decadence and glory is going to make SOMEONE look cheap and incompetent* *Zeridee absently spilling the juice on the floor as both of her eyes examine what has been wrought in escalating horror*

ImNotHere

"his mind is temporarily short-circuited" yeah... I think he will not be the only one Will Esh-erdi learn about thanksgiving and use it to further help Alden by making some of his friends come?

Temp One

Thank you for the chapter! Curious about whether Kabir is intimidated by Esh-erdi for no good reason; or if Esh behaves much more authoritatively with people who aren't commended like Alden?

Robert Mullins

Alden truly reached peak asexuality this chapter, not responding even a little bit to Natalie getting covered in whipcream.

Curtis

I don't think flaying is in the future. For starters he'd need to mentally conceive of a person as being distinct from their skin. He already finds it a struggle to mentally separate forks from the dirt on them in tricky situations (in a stack whilst talking). Then he would need the touch the 'person' but not their skin (preserving only the skin would be a lot easier). Finally, like the bowl and tree, I expect there's a powerful authority connection between different parts of the body that Alden would need to overcome.

Amber Gregory

This was the most adorable chapter yet. Exactly the sort of thing Alden would think up and the *perfect* gesture for the holidays. It feels just as good to give thanks as receive it. I bet it will be a smash hit with Anesidorans and the wizards.

Curtis

On the plus side, maybe Lute can join dinner now that he won't be the most hated person at the table!

Lee

I think it would work only if the person being preserved need help removing their skin. Like say a burn victim or someone with skin cancer. Remember his skill is rooted in sacrifice and meant for a saint.

Obran

So basically, bouncing instapot oatmeal from Haoyu? Who knows what from his parents.

Box Jellyfish

This is spectacular, an outstanding game of telephone is about to blow up in everyone's face. Alden talks to Haoyu; Haoyu talks to his parents, who talk to their battle team friends, etc. Next thing you know the message is garbled enough that Ghosten is getting a call from an S-rank buddy asking why one of her hero students has taken over the catering contract for Matadero. Next time Alden is summoned to LeafSong he'll be quizzed about the deep cultural significance of Sweet Potato casserole to Earth Avowed. Lexi will hear the massively incorrect details from Lute, who heard it from a moderately bitter Emillja, and will have his biggest yet WTF moments (egged on by Haoyu). By the end of it Stu will be serving up a bowl of dry stuffing for breakfast to Alden the next time he's at the Rapport.

Kevin Nilsson

I wouldnt think that the usa population is significant. Its 330k out of 8 billion. Thats just 4% china and india are bigger. So is europe prolly africa too.

Manfredi

Favorite line: "Potluck isn’t professional, but it feels right for the holiday." Such an Alden idea. He's a sweet boy. I wonder who will have to intercede with practical considerations such as "we need to make sure none of this is poisoned".

Kim Enteiu

Since he was already all “I’m just making sandwiches” I’m assuming he’s been trying to get food delivered for days and it’s been going poorly. His schedule for Wednesday was sandwiches, cry, dishes while I convince people that no really I need ingredients delivered to the cube—then it went sandwiches, WHAT DO YOU MEAN THURSDAY IT CANT BE THATS TOMORROW AND I STILL CANT CONVINCE STORES IM SERIOUSLY AT THE CUBE BEFORE THEY HANG UP ON ME.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Your comment made me search up population https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/ Man USA is comparable to Indonesia, have you seen Indonesia, it’s tiny compared to the US

JustMe

SkySeeker, Curtis. Both of you are extremely funny. Thank you

Spygeneer

Honestly it seems like a lovely idea if your in a small community like a town or church. Everyone brings a large serving of their family specialty dish to a communal potluck.

Lee

I am pretty sure that would be a votary's job to handle all details like security screening, etc

Matt

Readers: I hope Alden loses the entrustment requirement, it's so constricting and unnecessary. Also readers: I bet Alden could flay people with partial preservation. To be fair, I think Alden is on his way to loosening the entrustment requirement as seen in this chapter with the tray of dishes, but there's a massive chasm between that and separating someone from the burden of their skin without their explicit endorsement.

Matt

I'll admit that I had the same thought about flaying people when the dishes came up - which is somewhat alarming, honestly. Preserving someone without their cancer or other contaminants might be a bit more compatible with Alden's system-and-self-imposed morality constraints than flaying.

Alexander Dupree

This is the tastiest cliff I’ve ever read!

Charlie

1. I have *never* advocated for Alden to lose the entrustment requirement. 2. It would probably only work with skin cancer or similar external conditions. Even if Alden conceived of someone in the absence of their disease, the disease would still be inside their preserved body, likely not even moving around. 3. Making people bald is a definite possibility.

Jim

Followed by “Your friends should come too. Pick them up when you pick up the food. “

Squirrel

While the holiday of thanksgiving is mainly celebrated in the US & Canada, almost every culture has some sort of harvest festival, and it would make sense that a lot of them got blended together. Also, 4% might not be a very big slice of the pie, but it is the third largest slice.

Guus van der Borg

@Kevin Yeah, I was also surprised when I read that part. I'd get it if it's a holdout from the US's cultural osmosis through Hollywood though. Which begs the side question, with Anesidora's literal super-actors/models, do we think Hollywood is still as big of a thing in this world? Or did Anesidora take over as a cultural center?

orion

This is why I love this series so much. The most herioic quality Aden has is his empathy, and moments like these prove it just as much as the hell scenarios

Gregory

The potency of the partial preservation power is probably prodigious. Imagine all the things Alden could do! He could preserve a package except for the tape to immediately open it! He could preserve a person except for their dirt to take on his new identity, Dry Bath Man! He can preserve a burger and remove an undesirable sauce as if it was never there! Unmeat a pizza! He could even remove glitter from an object, a task previously thought impossible! Possibly it also has some combat value, I dunno, I'm all in on mundane convenience.

Voidsong

Emilija is going to kill Alden. Nothing can save him from her wrath. And I totally understand it too. If I was about to get the most delicious magical turkey of all time served and someone took that away, there'd be hell to pay. My brother smokes a turkey at thanksgiving and it gets a smoke ring an inch deep into the turkey. It's the best thing ever and if there was magic involved making it better than THAT, I'd literally fight someone for it

Clint

To be fair, this is leaning heavily into Alden Rheh-b’t rather than Alden Hero. Zeridee and Bash-nor might both approve.

Voidsong

Well I mean, bones are just bones right? I can conceive of a skeleton as a single thing. So just preserve only the skeleton. Shlorp goes the rest of them. Or preserve everything except the skeleton... Not sure which is worse.

Clint

Mourners apparently have a skill to make themselves very happy. And can take sadness and pain from others. They don’t even need the bag of chips.

Obran

Now Alden is gonna have to get the assembled Wizards to watch Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboy Football.

Tommy Mullane

Really good. But I want turkey now :-)

Slightly Morbid

I think almost all countries have had harvest festivals, but ours in Sweden started to disappear some 100 years ago when farming became a less dominant occupation. Now it's more local traditions in a few places. So I'm not sure how true it is anymore.

ChoWingGom

Thank you for the chapter! Alden calls for aid! *6 hours later* Matadero : *on fire* Jeffy : "We did it Alden! We saved Thanksgiving!"

Thomas Todd

The juxtaposition of how Alden thinks of Esh and how Kabir thinks about him is really interesting. Its Lexi's comments about it drawing attention to Alden played out in real time It also points out how detached from normal Avowed Alden is, he's more connected to the Knights then he is humans

Slightly Morbid

Potluck is so perfect for the wizards. An enormous amount of different dishes from different cultures to discuss, speculate about and google. Alden will get soooo many questions he can't answer. 100% sure someone will add plush turkeys with knitted sweaters and kids will send in their drawings of how cool wizards are.

Clint

Lovely chapter. Alden is so sweet. And this truly captures all of the complicated facets of American Thanksgiving. It’s awkward family potluck with last minute culinary crises. Actual public expressions of gratitude. And then there’s the indigenous humans making a feast for the alien invaders. All we’re missing is teaching Artonan wizards how to play touch football. 🏈 and some kind of interpersonal drama. (Joe?? Bash-nor??) I can’t wait to see the social media and Artonan political fallout.

Guus van der Borg

Yeah, and, as Sleyca pointed out, Halloween is just a very fun holiday. No wonder it spreads. I think every culture has plenty of 'eat a lot of delicious food' holidays. So Thanksgiving wouldn't really spread.

Guus van der Borg

Especially if, as some people pointed out, Alden is going to go around on a green nonagon picking up dishes like a sort of reverse Santa Clause. It has the makings of a new holiday. ...Now I wonder if the reason the nonagon is green is exactly because Sleyca wanted to contrast Santa's red. Even if it's not true, I will now choose to believe it.

Nathan

Thanks Sleyca! That's such a sweet idea that can also fix their problem, I love when things come together nicely!

Reincheck

Natalie and Alden are two of the sweetest kids on the island. I don't celebrate Thanksgiving but I think what Alden's planning is one for the books. If taking pictures were allowed, he could share it on social media and watch the fireworks lol. Poor Emiljia though. XD

Obbu

Great chapter :) Given the undertones of Artonan colonialism that are scattered here and there in the story, it's an interesting holiday to introduce them to, I suspect?

Charles

And of course you would have to do tastings to be sure. Especially for a certain otherwise defended turkey.

VP

But it is not just 4%. Look at the case we have: one american, two non Americans hosting. If every American celebrates (unlikely) and they each have 1 non american friend they talk into celebrating (free food and merryment? Sure why not!) that would be 8 people in a hundred. Remove a couple of Americans and add a couple of non Americans (most people host more than a person), and let's average it to 10%. That's 1 in 10 people. That's like, a lot. Not to make it a major holiday, for sure, but enough that people might make a note of it.

Francis

Character notes are hilarious today! And only Alden with his weirdness could come up with such a wonderful idea! I'm so sad I don't get to read about the dinner right now!

Clint

Hopefully the damage is somewhat mitigated by this not being a special holiday for Emilia. But Alden should definitely be thinking of a way to make this up to Natalie and her roommates.

Francis

It would be so heartwarming if they get gifts along with the food

Francis

I'm imagining Alden causing another Artonan political incident with intending to - what if the wizards are so touched by the food that they all start to feel guilty and responsible for the Submerger incident and then they contact their politicians to ask for a ban on handing powerful magical artifacts to Avowed...

Francis

If Artonans have social media and post pictures, Earth will soon be known as the home of the sweetest, most endearing Avowed in the universe

Francis

Absolutely. All those who only came for the brownie points are going to feel guilty af. Except Joe. He doesn't have a heart.

Francis

From this day forth, Thanksgiving will not be known as only an American holiday..

Jan Verner

I can totally get her. If a vegan friend of mine steals a magical turkey I have been dreaming about for days. There will be drastic consequences.

Francis

I think Natalie is going to get summoned very soon if they find out she made the turkey

Faiir

I would be so afraid of someone poisoning the food on the way.

vVip3rzzz

Alden bearing the burden of the thanksgiving spirit was NOT something I expected five chapters ago but somehow entirely in character. Alden feels my son. I do not know why but im so proud of the little dude anytime he does kind things for the sake of his Alden factor. I also desire death and murder for everything that would harm that sweet summer child.

Mike Sanderson

Now I'm waiting for Winston to hear about this latest dastardly step in Alden's cunning PR campaign.

Lee

Conversely, you also have Chinese who have non Chinese friends... Not American here so personally, I am meh on Thanksgiving. Too much effort to cook a meal like Turkey and all those side dishes. Here in the Philippines, the full effort holidays are Christmas dinner, New Year noche Buena, Lent, All Soul's day/Halloween, and local fiesta like Flores de Mayo

Jan Verner

In my experience scary powerful people who behave nicely commands a LOT of respect. You are usually painfully aware that if he loses his cool because of you his associates will end you. In this example all Esh needs to say is that he was looking for turkey 🦃 on Thanksgiving and there is none and Khabibs chances of getting off world just dropped 2-3 times.

Cyrus McEnnis

While you might be right about having to cook it, I have long thought that Natalie could make an absolute fortune focusing on condiments. Heavenly Choir Vegan Hot Sauce would be an absolute smash hit.

Catherine

I’m sure that will occur to Esh-erdi so hopefully he has a couple of votaries who can check for that when the food comes in

ImNotHere

Hot sauce made by cook of the moment? Music to my ears 🤤

ImNotHere

This is a nice arc, not to send people to hospital in catatonic shock (but it would be fun)

Cyrus McEnnis

Now here's a question - could Alden defrost a turkey by pickling the ice inside and yoinking it? I know it'd make a mess and basically dessicate the turkey, but combined with Kon's temporal control you could technically do that then reassemble the turkey afterwards. Granted a turkey reassembled without the water inside it would be drier than a mummies jock strap, but...

Gregory

Aulia's "This whole disaster was targeted at me" routine is kind of absurd and over the top. I'm not saying it wouldn't work, I'm just really sad that I can believe it would.

Carl Earl

Editing Note: "So turkey is a go. Cube meal delivery logistics…" should be "Cue meal delivery" Love this setup chapter. We are going to get to see the dinner somehow, right? I know Alden is going to the girl's place for TG, but I really hope we get good detail on the potluck.

no

no, cube, as in matadero is a cube

Aspiring Moth

I want klein to finally confront the issue. he made a reference to it in the student teacher meeting, but I want him to question it head on

Carl Earl

Ah, that could well be right. I did not think of that interpretation when I read it, but it is a valid one.

YeetimusMaximus

Im too spoiled by 8000 word chapters. I finished an said "thats it?", then realized the average bi-weekly chapter from Sleyca is 4x the length and 5x the quality of chapter other authors do weekly. The chapter was great sleyca, and i hope you have a great break week!

ThoMiCroN

Thanksgiving is such a specific US celebration, like Diwali is for India. I’ve looked into the Canadian version and found that it’s really just a clone of the US one, made by Ontarian protestants, and they just changed the date and pretended it had Acadian origins when in fact there is no such thing. They use the pretext that Samuel de Champlain created the Ordre du Bon Temps in Port-Royal, Acadia, New France to justify their Thanksgiving look-alike, but this event is of no particular significance in French America overall and much less so in the anglosphere.

Faces The Wind

20 years later... "Saint Thorn and the Forsaken Son deliver magical turkeys to wizards who protect us from angry ocean water on the last thursday of november, thats why we celebrate thanksgiving on Anesidora."

Fabian

People donating food for free as appreciation will mean so much to the Artonans, Porti'loth and others will be amazed lol

ThoMiCroN

I was about to say that. He wouldn’t believe this was not carefully planned.

Batty Corvina

Potluck donations is actually a pretty good idea! Also.. trust Aulia to somehow milk a disaster like this for maximum political gain by turning it into being all about her being a victim and her rivals being possibly suspect. Slimy politician mode in full swing.

Narf

It's really a shame that the story is already finished. I would have loved to read more of it, but I just cannot see how the story can continue after Emilija has drowned Alden in the harbour after having learned that he stole her turkey.

Shimelton

Is it a lot of side dishes? Maybe. But Koreans eat a similar amount of variety of banchan with every meal. Nowadays most Koreans buy their side dishes, but ajumma used to make all that.

Batty Corvina

Ohno... I just realised Alden can't even eat any of Natalie's turkey! What a tragedy.

Colby Rob

Must be strange writing about thanksgiving in July 💀

Shimelton

Interesting to think Alden will never have an issue picking around toppings he doesn’t like. Which feels like a normal, narrowly focused rabbit skill.

Kahandran

Thanksgiving will probably spread now... I think it'll take on a new meaning, though. Anesidorans being thankful for the Artonan intervention

ImNotHere

The ice is the meat, so he can not separate the two. Maybe the Avowed that was teaming with Hanna could help. He could alter the temperature of an area.

Shimelton

Imagine when it gets on the Socials and Anesidorans start sending literal radishes to the potluck to be funny.

Kahandran

This whole thread has fucking got me rolling Alden poking people and making them go bald

ImNotHere

uh, oh no! Zeridee will not be able to participate as she needs food from her birth planet

Lee

I've been thinking a lot about BoAB. I think that Alden is incrementally closer to realizing that the person entrusting something to him need not necessarily be someone else. He can entrust a burden to himself. Also that he physically need not be touching the burden, he just needs to use his authority magic which must be what happened with Z.

ImNotHere

Maybe that Kon touch by the turkey will have an epiphany and can rewind living stuff too. (I admit that Emilija will gladly drown Alden a second time but Kon is a S, he has power to spare)

Shimelton

If Alden can just rope Natalie and Co in as assistants, Emilija can have her turkey… with Wizards! And promptly get a dose of reality regarding Artonans when they all get high.

Kahandran

I doubt it'll get that big, but I wouldn't be surprised if Alden somehow finds himself dressed as a turkey recreating the landing at Plymouth Rock in the near future

ImNotHere

I'm really on board with a slice of life arc with lore drop here and there. With mundane problem as "how to thaw and cook enough birds a couple of hours before the meal" It will probably be short, but it will be sweet and I will enjoy it a lot Reminds me of the feast where we also got some lore dropped. A good meal is the best settings to get stories from people tilt: stories! the elder croak!

SFGuru

My God! Alden's life is going to be in more danger than ever if he shows up to Natalie's party and tells 10-20 people that Natalie has given away the roast turkey they've all being looking forward to. Especially when they realise he's vegan - and isn't giving up anything! Drusi-otta is going to have to intervene...

PatienceHoney

It's not just Kabir. I doubt Alden's, "Esh is super chill," attitude is shared by the wizards, especially in regards to him...

SFGuru

Also - several people pointing out the whipped cream moment with Natalie - but she is giving away the main course of a meal she's probably spent a lot of time and effort on, just cos Alden asked...

ChoWingGom

You are not drunk enough to think magically. Clearly Alden needs to be entrusted by The Cold to take up the burden of preserving the turkey. The Cold can then go elsewhere, confident that Alden will keep preserving the turkey.

happypotamus

[Divide From Whole] is more powerful than I realized. When Alden preserves just the tray, he's doing more than just preservation. In physical terms, he's making the preserved tray act like a frictionless object, except where he's gripping it.

PatienceHoney

De-glitter objects... no... no... tha... that's impossible... ...no... My dream of becoming known as the supervillan, Glitterati, just came to an abrupt end... 😱 Damn you Alden Thorn! Win Win was right! You are diabolical!

PatienceHoney

I really really want Alden to pass out paper and markers and have the wizards make hand turkeys ... a timeless classic...

WannaBeATree

Do the charater notes imply that Esh-erdi has been eavesdropping? :)

SFGuru

That's why he can easily just give it away to the Artonans.

Tauwetter

There must be an F-rank rabbit out there with the very specific talent of defrosting food! Once in a lifetime opportunity for them to serve the tri-planets XD

puppy0cam

If I recall, Artonan parties are very much a "be sloppy on purpose" kind of scenario... The cleanup afterward is going to be fun.

Tauwetter

I think you underestimate the cultural impact of america on the world. I am european and I know more about thanksgiving than my local havest festival traditions... Most anesidorans from culturally western-leaning countries are aware of thanksgiving and many will use it to bring friends and family together after the catastrophy.

Slightly Morbid

I'm a European and the only thing I know about Thanksgiving is turkey, funny hats and killing the indigenous population.

William Johnson

Okay, so I did not expect to be this invested in the Thanksgiving arc but OMG I am all in on wizard potluck.

DAK

@PatienceHoney— No! Don’t give up on your dreams. Every villain needs a hero counter to fuel their narrative. Alden is the perfect straight man for Glitterati. He’ll be so beloved, but such a bland interview. The public will want more of him, but only really in the sense of knowing he’s there in the background. It is your time to shine

JJR Killjoy

Artonan Generals are scary? Please, once you get to know half a dozen or so they're really not all that scary -Alden probably

Saaski

Sometime in the distant future…. A random chef. “Oh, no! What shall I do??” Alden, “Don’t worry about it. Do you trust me with this kitchen?” Chef, “Huh?” Kibby rolled her eyes, “You say yes.” “Yes?” The chef’s jaw nearly hit the floor as all the grime, dust and rubbish that had accumulated stripped themselves from every single surface imaginable. Neatly falling into the bin. Then, every cup, plate, utensil and tool.. basically anything and everything that wasn’t bolted down shuffled themselves off to their proper places. Even the fridge scooched over from where it had slid. “What?” The chef asked. “He took the burden of cleaning off you.” Said Kibby, like that should explain everything.

JJ Hunter

My heart is full. This makes me want to cook an impromptu feast and invite my neighbors to eat it with me. I really like how much Natalie's generosity is contagious here - the way her perspective shifts Alden's and has him looking again and refitting what he sees at Matadero in a more generous frame. It feels very Thanksgiving for the generosity of the wizard volunteers to be met by the generosity of the humans they came to help - literally sharing dishes prepared for their own tables feels like it's nailing a particular resonance of poetry, of ritual, a homegrown hospitality magic that humans also have and sometimes do very well. People want to help; they want to reciprocate help given. Sometimes they just need an invitation to how. I expect this is going to get magnificently out of hand fast and I cannot wait.

Partha Peddi

This is a nice low-key chapter to read, similar to the Artona visit ones. I am guessing TC will get hectic with dishes to teleport to Matadero Thanksgiving potluck. I am wondering if Natalie will cook additional vegan Turkey alternative dishes for her Turkey replacement. Alden will have to give up his share to Emilija as recompense. After tasting Natalie's turkey, I am sure the wizards will ask about her at dinner, and it will get Natalie an invite to Matadero.

Enkelados

This chapter is so wholesome and random, I love it. The transition from disaster recovery and existential revelations to thanksgiving prep is amazing.

JJ Hunter

More seriously, I bet Alden could preserve people in a way that separates them from contact poison or acid exposure...which would definitely be a boost for his unintended wizard lab assistant career prospects! I was also wondering if Alden might eventually get good enough he could precipitate things out of solution just by taking the container they're in. Could Alden preserve the boundaries of breathable air or (very briefly) preserve the breathable air in a space but not the toxins in it, or vice versa? Maybe someday Alden could be a one-man Fragile Atmosphere generator with the right entruster to work with (shaper of sky like Vandy, perhaps?).

JJ Hunter

@Francis, it does feels like the kind of event that redefines the holiday, or starts an Anesidoran-specific version, doesn't it.

Saaski

Me too. I have this reaction to every chapter 😌

Ano Ano

I love Alden just being right about the emotional and moral reality of a situation. It's so sweet of him to understand the social dynamics at play in the way he is.

ImNotHere

Alden: word association innovator. After "Interstellar pigeons", he offers you "Thanksgiving Potluck at Matadero"

ImNotHere

The issue with Alden preserving the turkey and not the cold is that technicaly "cold" does not exist, only the absence of heat. So taking the cold would mean adding something instead of separating two things.

Saaski

By the end, it will will become a holiday where bastard children forsaken by their mother sacrifice a magical dinner in honor of all the help they received from kind strangers as a child.

John Koor

If Anesidora were a real government, there would definitely be a major problem with taking public donations of homemade meals to feed the staff. The potential for having the workers poisoned or infected by something, either intentionally or not is much greater. Heck, nowadays even schools require cupcakes for kids' birthdays to be store bought and sealed instead of homemade. The facility was potentially just directly attacked by a terrorist group, so if there is a governmental bureaucracy they'd be strongly against opening the door to a second attack via loosened food handling.

John D Jones

[quote] “Ms. Velra,” Kabir answered. “If I call her, there will probably be turkeys falling from the sky within the hour.” [/quote] That's not necessarily a good thing, Kabir... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lf3mgmEdfwg&t=1s&ab_channel=EpicHouston

puppy0cam

Natalie is being paid in the most valuable currency of them all: exposure.

JJ Hunter

This has *magnificently* exceeded every potential scenario I was imagining for how the rest of Alden's classmates might find out he's been staying at Matadero. At this rate the entire island (not to mention the whole internet!) will know Kabir and Alden have been staying at Matadero since the incident. If Thanksgiving Potluck at Matadero goes well, I bet Kabir will become an interdimensional celebrity. (I hope Natalie gets a congratulatory call from her Cook of the Moment mentor in a day or two! I hope her magic turkey is such a wild success Artonans are chanting odes about it at poetry festivals within the year.)

Cyrus McEnnis

Yeah, I came to that conclusion as well - if he can bear the temperature of an object away, that kind of implies that he's dropping it to 0 degrees Kelvin which would have all sorts of non-trivial effects.

JJ Hunter

I feel like experienced Artonan staff likely have magical tools to help with food screening and safety. Hopefully Esh-erdi will commandeer a few of them to assist...

JJ Hunter

...is Alden going to end up serving as impromptu wait-staff again? Kabir seems like he needs all the hands on deck he can borrow and then some.

Alex Iskandar

Maybe this is rule not universal? I've never heard of this in my country during my school years.

Exposure doesn't feed people though. It being treated like a valuable on its own leads to a vicious feedback loop in which none wants to pay artists in actual money, making it incredibly difficult to be an artist without a separate primary income or rich parents / partner(s). I don't think exposure being a way to "pay" people should be endorsed ever.

Thanksgiving potluck is a fun idea. Nice to see Alden getting some good skill exercise in.

PatienceHoney

@DAK ...and with all the glitter I plan to share with the world there will be no place that won't shine... ...shine my pretty... shine!

Robert Mullins

People keep saying this but I am skeptical that it's ever going to happen. His power was designed to be used as part of a team in support of that team. Like the battlefield support role he always wanted. The idea of using it solo was likely never given much consideration since it defeats the point. The closest thing I can imagine to what you are suggesting is a pre-existing agreement or contract saying that Alden is entrusted with certain things under certain conditions.

Shimelton

Easy way to get food delivered: use wizards to summon the gifting Avowed, who are holding their gifts. 30 seconds and one argold later send them back.

Anon.

Good thing Alden has been practicing cleaning applications of his skill!

Lee

I think maybe it's Alden who is so focused on becoming like Hannah that maybe he is blinded to the possibilities of his own skill. Like a preconception when in fact it much broader and powerful.

J Reynolds

Suppose Alden could preserve someone, but not their cancer cells. You'd have a preserved person. And cancer cells that are not preserved. What is he supposed to do with that? Keep the person preserved until the cancer rots away?

J Reynolds

Artonans showed up in early 1960s. So a lot of wars that happened OTL probably didn't happen in the Soup time line - so "the Vietnam war" would mean the French attempt to hold on to Vietnam, not the US or Chinese phases.

Kim Enteiu

@Clint I would agree, if what is definitely going to become “That Ryeh-b’t Alis-art’h commended’s harvest feast of gratitude and thankfulness” didn’t makes Bash-nor’s parties shallow and cheap by comparison. There might even be a competing party that gets abandoned because Bash has one set of “traditional” Food, while Alden’s will have a variety that will put LeafSong to shame.

J Reynolds

Yeah, the Canadian version only became a national holiday in the early 1960s. It's just an excuse for a long weekend in October. No other cultural significance, IMO.

Pinpoint Inaccuracy

I think it has less to do with Alden and more to do with being thankful about Joe and also looking to get her name out there with the aliens

J Reynolds

How the heck are they going to get stuff to Matadero? There's going to be a lot of food, and it will take a long time for Alden to fly around, pick stuff up from all kinds of places, then fly back.

John D Jones

@ Endaris Fortunately, unlike in our own, much shittier reality, in the Sleycaverse, exposure just introduces artists to an audience who will pay them assloads of money for their art.

John D Jones

In the Sleycaverse there's probably a spell or Life Shaper that can let turkeys fly.

Jim

I was think that they can have a gathering spot at the TC or something and Alden or Esh can have it authorized to Matadero's TC. Otherwise Alden is going to be taking the NESWOMFH at top speed and preserving everything

denatured

I think puppy was being sarcastic, but y'all have valid points. Remember to pay your interns!

"Alden thought it wasn’t half bad as far as ideas went. Why not have politicians swear unbreakable oaths to do their jobs? But the councilors were all united against it. " I'm surprised Alden feels that way. Just a day ago he was raging in his mind against the limitations Joe's Tattoo put on him ...

John D Jones

There's what, maybe 20-50 Wizards at Matadero? Figure Alden's idea is going to snowball and they'll get enough food for like 5000 people or so. I'm hoping this results in Natalie and friends just moving the party to Matadero to help take care of the wizards. I'm hoping we get Lexi, Haoyu and their families to show up as well. Along with Vandy and her folks. Are they Norwegian? And would they be cruel enough to inflict lutefisk on everyone?

Lee

It's a sad world where you cannot even trust your classmates. If you are that paranoid, the best rule is to get donations to just buy food for the party. I mean if someone wants to poison their child's class, store bought food won't stop them.

Kim Enteiu

We might get a Christmas arc on Christmas Day, it’s Wednesday just 34 chapters away.

Charlie

If it's skin cancer the cells might be mostly external and just sort of schluff off. W.r.t disease inside the body, cells can't go *that* long without resources from the rest of the body. If he could preserve someone for an entire day, many of the disease cells might die off and be processed in the normal way.

CaylaCat

yup. sure hope there's no magical resonance that moves towards repetition of the things those colonialists did

Aspiring Moth

it's no more a use of divide from whole than the suitcase trick is. the burden is defined as excluding the food waste beforehand. divide from whole is separating a part of the preserved object, like the poncho within Alden's preserved emergency bag being unpreserved so it could be held as a separate preservation

Obran

So now all they got to worry about is someone who doesn’t like aliens making a bean casserole filled with glass shards

Aspiring Moth

the cancer cells would die very quickly. any cells cut off from their blood supply would die quickly, but especially cancer cells due to the uncontrolled high metabolism behind their uncontrolled growth. preserving someone minus their cancer and holding them like that for an episode of a TV show would be more than enough

When his opinion actually impacts an outcome he puts a lot of thought into ramifications. But he's still 16, he gets to have some shallow, ill-considered opinions sometimes, especially when he's distracted by the unexpected beauty of falling leftovers.

denatured

Alden really sucks at staying under the radar. Wasn't he just thinking that everyone on Anesidora is only two degrees of separation from everyone else? This is going to be on the news. Alden is going to be on the news. Win-win is going to freak. No wonder Alden didn't want to do his collab, he already had something big planned.

Aspiring Moth

Alden needs to make Joe feel terrible by getting a class of young children to write thank you letters to the bald general

DAK

This hit such a level of slice of life that I actually thought about Tori Transmigrated for the first time in forever. Except that my desire to read the next chapter isn’t partly rooted in sunk cost fallacy. Anyway. Hopefully Alden doesn’t create a wildly successful food service franchise based on the fact that Artonans have never heard of a buffet restaurant before.

Lorevi Q

I think he hit the nail on the head with not being able to maintain his skill while consciously letting go of items. He needs a classmate to try and take the item from him while he maintains preservation.

David

I think the actual wizards will be fine. There’s definitely a spell for that, and they may have set up wards against poisoning and contaminated food when they constructed the cafeteria.

Anthony Lutz

I'm not sure if it was said anywhere, i can't find a reference atm, but i thought it was more like several hundred wizards. But you are right in that it's going to snowball into a massive feast. I doubt anyone who isn't already under the matadero secrecy contract will come visit/support the feast on site. Though I'm expecting a city wide scrabble of food being delivered to the TC before having it sent to matadero. Then i hope that all of the s rank combat teams get summoned back to serve as waiters to the wizards.

Shawn

While that's possibly true, our primary experience with them is the Triangle of Secrecy which is a giant thorn in Alden's side. I don't know that we've seen enough of the Velra one to make any real judgements there.

Memoryofgold

I neeed moooorrreeee (thank you for your amazing and consistent work!)

Austin

I loved this chapter. If it gets out the potluck is Alden's idea Winston is going to lose his shit hahaha

Adamas Shield

The MC is yet to become the rabbit of rabbits. But man his network (and heart) are amazing. Give S rank food gift with gratitude in a harvest festival? Adding dozens to hundreds more meals to that equation? Yeah some of these wizards will remember this. Peharps this will also please the shaman doctor ^^.

BeepBoop

I doubt Alden would have at all minded an agreement that only restricts him whilst he is doing an important job. In fact, I do not think he is upset about the parts of the contract that made him do his job and could be removed after the job is done. It is only the stuff that is permanent and forever impacts what he can say and do, even with the closest of friends and in the most extreme of situations that rubs him the wrong way. There are plenty of reasons to be concerned about unbreakable oaths for politicians, but in just about any country nowadays there are laws politicians in particular cannot break, rules about how they can act whilst in office. If they break them there are then processes to remove them. If there was a way to magically make that process better, the only harm is if the magical oath was made poorly or with corrupt intentions. Of course, it could also be too restrictive, actually defining what it means to do their jobs rather than simply holding them to existing laws. Alden does not have the experience or expertise to judge these things, but I'd imagine many people would at least be interested in the prospects of a literally magical solution to reduce corruption and get politicians to act when it matters. There is no perfect solution to anything, but there is nothing wrong with thinking that an idea sounds nice.

Slightly Morbid

First time we met Natalie, she was handing out food for free as advertisement. This is the same on an epic scale.

Tadas

Depends on oath right? Imagine a country where politicians actually work for people and it's literally impossible to be corrupt. There would be price for power. Instead power hungry selfish pricks you would get people who want to serve. And it's not permanent, once you leave office you could remove the tattoo.

Kim Enteiu

Bullets are gifts being delivered too quickly; glass is just extra texture.

Alden: Release my selection story? Read the room, Win. *organizes thanksgiving food drive to let all of Anesidora thank the wizards by sharing a small piece of their meal * Win, tears in his eyes: that could have been me; I could have arranged to have my fans send something.

Jeff Petkau

If Kabir makes stock from the turkey bones, does Cook of the Moment still apply? Can he make super soup?

Ploddingpanda

I think the store bought rule for cupcakes/party food in schools stemmed from rules around allergies. Like some schools (in the US) straight up ban anything with peanuts. Banning homemade food comes from allergy concerns since people at home might be less careful about cross contamination. (Not that I agree, I love baking and sharing home baked goods)

Kim Enteiu

Oh, that’s would be hilarious; I could see Esh, just amping it up a little more to drive the knife in deeper for Bash-nor by calling in a familiar Artonan designer to outfit the waitstaff 😆 Alden, stepping into the kitchen, locks eyes with an Artonan: “My, goodness. Met-oosa, how wonderful to see you again, but I really need to help deliver more food. Please excuse me. Have a nice week. Bye.” *exit stage left, pursued by an artist*

Ploddingpanda

Alden is definitely calling Lexi after Haoyu, which would give him an heart attack. Lexi might hang up on him in disbelief, but then Alden will call Kon, and Kon is going to gather food donations from all the classmates, which is how all the information gets all over the school.

Polaris

I didn’t even think of how big this could get. This is going to be so funny when it blows out of proportion

Shawn

ChoWingGom, I was going to write something similar but your phrasing was excellent. I don't know why everyone is trying so hard to apply science to magic. It's magic, embrace the cold, preserve it away from the Turkey!

Kahandran

Dear lord you're right, Joe's going to have pockets full of stuffing and gravy

WannaBeATree

Ryeh-b'ts (animals) are also used to carry messages around for Artonans. So Alden flying around to get food and delivering it to wizards is on point. :)

WannaBeATree

I do wonder whether that was a genuin accident or an unconscious use of appeal points.

Shawn

That was lovely. I'm waiting for the craziest version of telephone ever and this blowing up in his face with way too many donations. Then Aulia will try to claim as Alden is a family friend.

Kahandran

I think he would have realized by now if his skill could do that. Didn't he browse through the catalogue of potential skill evolutions when he was talking with Artona I? I suppose he could have missed some things, and doubtlessly there are changes the skill can undergo that might not be listed.. but I'd be surprised if he gets such a powerful evolution anytime soon. That sounds like a skill evolution that might be years or decades in the future, if at all.

WannaBeATree

Kabir would be able to whip something up, since he has the time now. Maybe something that tastes like orange.

Andrew Boyer

Natalie should hand-deliver the turkey, and collaborate with Kabir. He’d have a lot to teach her.

Temp One

I think it's worth drawing attention to the fact Alden is increasingly able to bear things without explicit permission if he perceives the context is right. First it was objects thrown at him. But now it's objects that look like they're being presented to him.

Kim Enteiu

The entire next chapter could just be conversations out of context and I’d love it. “Hayou, why are you shoving your crock-pot mashed potatoes into that drone?” “Alden’s organizing a thank you thanksgiving potluck for the wizards at the Cube.” “He’s? Oh. That’s wonderful let me get the—“ “—Turkey’s gone? What do you mean it’s gone? Did someone take it?” “No one took it, I gave it to Alden for the Wizards at Matadero.” “The Theif! He doesn’t even eat meat! Why couldn’t you just give him—“ “Cranberry sauce… Cranberry sauce…” “Are you stirring that with Writher?” “Yeah. It’s for Alden… Just Alden. Nothing special is going on.” “Whatever you—“ “—have got to be kidding me. What do you mean Thorn is organizing a food drive for the Wizards of Matadero? I knew it! He had this all planned out from the—“ “—started? No I’m done, Alden had already finished his and he had a broken leg and finished before me. What? Thanksgiving? No that’s on Thursday. It’s… What do you mean it’s Thursday? I need to get started on the—“ “-lumpia works, right? Savory or desert? Maybe Artonans would like both….”

WannaBeATree

It would absolutly work. But the skill's effect would be a lot weaker. Like Stuart said talking about his soon to be skill. Instant relocation of the bean would be possible, but weaker, since a road needs to be traveled and the skill gaining strength from the concept.

WannaBeATree

Can Alden actually preserve a coating of water? There is no easy way to "grab" it, but it would be a nice way to catch Klein. Or maybe a coating of dust? What about smoke? A smokebomb could be really usefull. Also, did he ever test preserving an active laser after getting the new skill?

Lee

It's potluck so self service. Waiters are anathema.

SFGuru

From the way everyone describes Natalie's food - I think the result is going to be more like a drug dealer giving everyone a free sample to get them hooked! She's going to do just fine.

Andrew Boyer

What was the thing early on where every rabbit in intake was invested and helping, the spending day? Like that, on steroids.

Stylemys

There’s no way that Haoyu’s mother will settle for just donating a dish. Especially since she’s allowed to visit Matadero. I fully expect she will be there decorating and helping organize the dishes within an hour.

Ian T Hathaway

Emilija is actually going to kill Alden, oh no

Obran

Does this Turkey Heist make Alden, Kabir's support villain?

Kim Enteiu

I feel like she’s too graceful for that to have been an accident, maybe her appeal leaned her into indirect flirtation?

L. Rattay

I could imagine that the lexikon family is willing to donate a dish. But surely Lexi's judgemental eyes will be uppon Alden ones again. Alden please do better.

Vega

Let’s be real, at least if Alden gets killed here it will be for something he deserved.

Aspiring Moth

Anyone else think that this will be Alden's social media debut? The matadero potluck is big news and the wizards are happy. Alden, the knights and the wizards take a group photo with a caption thanking the anesidorans, and Alden posts it online so all the people who contributed can see. no information about matadero other than the wall behind the wizards is revealed so Esh-erdi gives the go ahead since it's really good for relations

Slightly Morbid

Joe is gonna need a sneaky sneaky spell so he can get at the food without being noticed.

L. Rattay

I could also imagine that people around him will post pictures of him with high profile celebrities and a lot of people are highly anticipating for this young rabbit to finally make his social media debut. ... ... But the next post they get from him is a picture of a leaf that is shaped like a tiny boat. Or a picture of a stone thrown in a quiet lake, which made the most perfect riples.

Aspiring Moth

remember Lute talking about how he felt that if he went up to his favourite street musicians as an S rank asking for advice he would be shouted away? I imagine there's a similar thing going on here. Natalie will outcompete people in the field they've dedicated their work lives to pretty easily, all because she has an S rank skill dedicated to the task. there has to be hard feelings in regards to that by the lower rank chefs without special cooking talents

Aspiring Moth

Joe is going to need a sneaky sneaky spell for more than that. the matadero potluck news will spread all over the island and Alden will be front page as a result. The Thegund disaster and Joe's role in it may come out too. "The other side to the bald general" in newspapers

Unavowed

No good deed goes unpunished. As so many others have said already, the pleasantness of the residents of Anesidora trying to repay the Triplanets' wizards with this token gesture of appreciation is exactly the kind of thing that will get plenty of attention. Part of the reason for Alden being at Matadero is to keep a low profile. Breaking cover with the Thanksgiving potlock may catch the attention of Ambassador Bash-nor and give him the excuse he needs to visit Matadero — and Alden.

hercule pyro

She's at cooking school tho, there's already people teaching her in a structured way

Calibri

Alden is literally the cutest like this; bearing the burden of the Thanksgiving spirit is an adorable way to put it

Vysirez

This felt a bit short. Not sure if it actually was short though, or if I just read through it really fast and misjudged. Fun chapter though. Potluck is a great idea.

Partha Peddi

And Drusi-otta. She needs a plate too. He envisioned himself fixing one, calling her name, and then watching as the food disappeared into thin air. Alden still thinks he is being monitored by Drusi in Matadero, but still he practiced spells in the bathroom. Do Artonans have extreme regard for personal space that he thinks he will not be monitored while practicing spells?

Aspiring Moth

and if she has a brute instructor, she will make better food than they ever can a couple of terms into high school. that's a recipe for resentment. it's less common than the musician problem because it's rabbit exclusive talent dependent rather than foundation point dependent actually now that I think of it, are there special sniffer or taster (?) brute talents that would help with cooking? regardless, they definitely help much less than cook of the moment

Aspiring Moth

Honestly I'm waiting for a reveal when Lind-Otta is introduced more so than Drusi-Otta. Lind has been conspicuously absent despite being at matadero every single night, and she was the one who first sensed Alden's authority greeting. Drusi is Lind's votary so maybe she told her about the things she's seen?

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Alternate Universe: The first drawing of a pair of hands wrapped in string caught Alden’s eyes in a way it never had before. He leaned closer, drawing out his auriad to mimic the diagram. “Ay what the fuck,” said a disembodied voice in the corner. “Hold on have you been watching me every time I take a shit,” said Alden. “Yeah and I’m on a video call with Esh and Lind too, we heard you ate a whole jar of oil recently and were curious”

Super Super Supportive Supporter

It’ll be funny if this bleeds over to how his actual mind works Like he plucks your phone out of your hand and says ‘oh thanks’ because you were walking in his general direction so he assumes you wanted to give it to him

Box Jellyfish

I think you're making a major assumption that Matadero is an Anesidoran government facility. From the way it operates it looks far more like it's Artonan territory. Just the cost of having of Esh-erdi and Lind-otta (or the predecessors) on-site during the chaos battles would destroy any budget for Matadero.

ClownWhosFeelnDown

I wonder how having politicians swear a magical oath to do their jobs would go. The wording and intent behind it would have to be really clear. And even then, it would probably be pretty easy to manipulate to your advantage, sort of like the three oaths in the Wheel Of Time. The oaths would either have to be so general that they become ineffective, or so specific and restrictive that anyone in office would essentially be a slave working themselves to death.

John D Jones

@ Thomas Todd To Alden Esh-erdi is Esh("Just call me Esh")-erdi. To Kabir he's General Esh-erdi-who-could-have-me-killed-and-just-make-up-a-reason-why.

Anghwrtais

So Natalie used her skill and butter herbs…. did she brine?

Endaris

@John: Supposedly that's how it "works" in our world too except it doesn't most of the time. The concept was presented like a "universal truth" by the original comment so I could not help myself throwing in some heavy disagreement.

sketerpot

Fun fact: you can get results equivalent to brining by generously salting the outside of the turkey and letting it sit uncovered in the refrigerator for 24 hours (or longer, if you like). A salty surface layer of concentrated brine forms as water is drawn out of the meat osmotically. In addition to being easier than a traditional brine, this tends to produce better surface browning.

Obbu

Edit: I've seen Sleyca's response on RoyalRoad (Thankyou @Jim), and now I feel like a goose. Going to leave the original comment here, but I genuinely do feel bad for criticizing this, now, understanding the wider scope of the nonsense that Sleyca is dealing with. Apologies @Sleyca! Sorry if I contributed to your own frustrations! I actually agree with pretty much everything you said in the RR response. ----- @Sleyca Just a little critique about the RoyalRoad version: I notice that you've added some genre tags to the book's title on RoyalRoad. "Super Supportive: Slice of Life, Alien Wizards" This is something I'd like to see authors move away from, personally. I've been a huge fan of Super Supportive breaking this RR trend thus far, and would politely suggest that it go back to the original title. Basically, if there's a problem with the visibility of works (something that obviously is not the case for this series, given it's high rating) there should be improvements to the search/tags functionality of the website. The trend towards the light novel "try to fit your entire blurb in the title" is frustrating, I feel it cheapens the quality of title (and honestly blurb) writing within the space. Super Supportive has enough visibility to be a counter trend setter in this regard, and many of the highest rated titles already do this. Anyways, just my 2c - it won't change how much I'm enjoying the story, but it's a bit of a pet peeve!

Kim Enteiu

If there’s a spell to freeze something solid there’s a spell designed to gently unfreeze something that could defrost turkeys. It’s probably a warming spell that draws cold out rather than generating heat.

zero1995

How ironic would it be if after Thanksgiving Artona I colonize Earth.

Jim

You know, I was just thinking... This is the kind of thing that leads to holidays being created. I know Thanksgiving is already a thing for the US and Canada, but this could be adopted as Anesidora Thanksgiving. 100 years from now, they will tell the story of the great magical disaster, and the people of Anesidora suffered, then the wizards came to help the Avowed to hold back the tides. Great Wizards and generals like the Bald General, and Esh-erdi and Lind-otta displayed great feats of magic, while Heroes like Sea Moves made their start, and then the Daikon the Secondary declared "let the people give back to their saviors and celebrate their heroes" and everyone gave a little so that all could have something to share.

Jim

If you scroll down on the first page of comments on RR, you will see that she commented on why she did this and that it is just temporary.

Obbu

@Jim Thanks for this, I've updated my comment!

5haun

@Francis omg if Alden or someone gives a “thankful for you Artonan’s” speech the wholesome parallel will be complete 😂 @JJ Hunter exactly, Haoyu short circuited because he knew no one had ever had a Thanksgiving Potluck at Matadero! Sundays chapter should be awesome!

denatured

Her skill gives the dish strong emotional resonance, but I don't think it makes the food prettier, gives her better cooking technique, or tells her what to do with new ingredients. It doesnt help her plan a menu, or give her better efficiency and timing. If she's looking for mastery in all regards she still has a lot to learn. And a brute could feed a whole cube full of wizards for a week, but Natalie would get physically too tired. It's an enviable skill, but it's not the only enviable skill, ya know?

N Johnson

Up until recently Alden was practically a latchkey kid... I'm pretty sure this will be his first potluck.

Shimelton

He isn’t touching the object itself though. My understanding of BoaB is his [bound] authority wraps the object and he holds the authority-wrapper.

5haun

I wonder if that’s what Sahara Earth is, an Artonan colony/base, from when that one Artonan kid asked Alden where he was from when he was dressed as the black wizard ryeh’bt at the Leafsong party 😬

Lee

And this is why I loved Kabir so much. He's a brute but he works as a chef. And he works for Aulia so he must be very talented cook.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Copy pasting My good reasons for doing it: A lot of people don't realize the story is about anything but superheroes and occasionally adding a few words there on the title might draw readers who will really like it. They will join us here in our cult, and then we'll have more and better conversations! So I might periodically mix it up like that. I should do it more often. My bad reason for doing it: I felt mild frustration today. People are going to break me telling me the Slice of Life came out of left field and I should have tagged the story. It has been tagged for more than a year. It's mentioned three times in the description. There's a giant note on the first chapter. image But I get comments and messages about it at least a few times a month like I'm hiding the truth to lure in unsuspecting readers. And I would make an argument that Super Supportive isn't even as slice of life as a lot of slice of life I've read. Now I'm worried that people who just want to read peaceful scenes about gentle characters having conversations at cafes are going to come to this story looking to chill from their stressful lives...and be struck with a teenager's ripped in half corpse in chapter one, followed by alien politics and disaster survival. One more thought: I don't think tags are the same things as warnings. They aren't promises about things that will never ever be mentioned in the story. Every now and then I get a comment from someone that's like "there is no X and there can never be even a shadow of X because it wasn't tagged on day one." Warnings are warnings, and Royal Road offers four content warnings: Graphic Violence, Sensitive Content, Profanity, Sexual Content Super Supportive is wearing all of them except for the Sexual Content warning right now because the site says that one is specifically for explicit, descriptive scenes. And I don't see myself writing a scene like that. The Ghosten/Medium Snake sex scene is more my speed. The best use of tags seems to be to help readers identify stories they might enjoy. Not to warn them off of stories that incorporate mentions of an element they dislike. People have in the past demanded that I tag the story if there's going to be any romance at all ever, without realizing that there isn't even a romance tag on Royal Road. There is a romance genre, which is for stories that "focus on the romantic love between two people". The only relationshippy tag on Royal Road at all is the "harem" tag. Technically, I could use that one I guess. Since the Artonans (and occasionally humans) do poly marriages. And we don't even know what some of the other aliens get up to! But can you imagine how unhappy the people searching for an MC with a harem would be to land on Super Supportive?

PatienceHoney

I was thinking the same thing, but your version just became head canon for me.

Aivean

Regarding non-English words, here's a mildly interesting bit of trivia: the diminutive forms of Russian names are most of the time not just prefixes, but completely unique words. For example, Konstantin becomes Kostya, Alexey becomes Lyosha, and Irina becomes Ira.

Anon-Anon

Yep and look how awful Japanese titles are for light novels due to the no blurb and tags lol. It's sad to see we're going that way.

jg

He was watching her intently as. A beautiful woman cooking! Some of us men can multitask, like talking to a sexy woman, being aware of her sexiness , being aware of our reaction, and not letting that biological activity be the absolute defining of the connection between people. Teenage boys grow into self controlled men given encouragement by women and other men often enough to achieve a civilization. Clothes matter to mens ability to think more than the other highly sexed apes, the Koran pinpoints mens weakness rather than women's boldness, the reason for all cultures to clad at least their genitals is to achieve society. With Appeal being an exercise of authority at least partially the reactions of the rebel Avowed to Natalie ( that much of a beauty boost and still here must be a rabbit ) and Alden not that confused by Boes worth getting caught to look at her , sometimes it's pheromones sometimes it's familiarity sometimes it's hormones. Or as sleyca has already noted in a comment don't assume the asexuality! An Exquisite Tongue of Pleasure could be called for as part of Alden's mind healing hospital experience!

Slightly Morbid

I changed my name after a hospital stay in Australia. My given name is not my first name, but my second. Typically only that one is used in our registers. But in Australia they wanted the full name and assumed the first name was the one to address me with. That name was from my grandfather and stopped being popular 100 years ago. Even worse, it had Swedish letters they couldn't pronounce! 😭 After six months of being addressed with a badly pronounced name I didn't have, I had enough and removed it as soon as possible. For those that is curious, it was "Gösta".

Slightly Morbid

Here in Sweden, we typically mix the salt with some sugar to get a rounder taste. Ten percent or less. Sugar is also a preservative. We mostly use the dry salting method for fish as it sucks up the salt easier. I didn't know brining was used for thanksgiving turkeys. We use it for yule ham.

Slightly Morbid

Binding oaths would make trials much more interesting. Possibly lessen the need for surveillance in jails. Just them existing would change a lot of social rules for behaviour.

Regarding the name change, I stayed away from this story for a rather long time because I didn’t think I wanted to read a story about superheros. I think the new title would have brought me here quicker.

Aspiring Moth

@WannaBeATree, Sleyca mentioned in a comment once that Alden would be able to pick up an entrusted puddle. So probably yes to all of your ideas

Aspiring Moth

yeah, something equivalent to the knights oath, forcing them put the interests of the country before their own interests. it would work fine

I don't know if he really thinks she's watching him on Matadero, or if that's the only way he can picture interacting with her.

Aspiring Moth

Since it's going to be about a week until the next chapter, I thought it would be fun to design some talents for the side characters we know. put any ideas you have in the replies

Aspiring Moth

Lexi A skill or spell impression that makes him lighter, but only in relation to forces applied from his whip. Once he gets the hang of grabbing things with writher, he will be able to pull things and people around without cutting them. This talent would bear a portion of his weight when a force is applied to him through writher, making the force applied to him when pulling on something solid have much more impact - allowing him to launch himself around like a cross between Indiana Jones' whip swinging and a 3d maneuver gear from Attack on Titan. In spell impression form it would bear a fixed amount of his weight for a short time, and in skill form it would allow him to decrease and increase his weight up and down only in relation to forced applied through writher. this would give him a much more nuanced mobility tool, and would give him the option to increase his weight so he can act as an anchor for pulling larger objects with writher. There is a C rank agility brute spell impression that bears all of the weight of the avowed and allows them to fly, so I think the spell impression form is D/C ranked and the skill form is C ranked to visualise what I'm imagining, here's a short video of the skill 'far reach' from dishonored 2 in action. it's basically an extendable magic tendril for pulling yourself to things or things to you, so is very similar to Lexi with this hypothetical skill https://youtu.be/wAdoiLmHDuM

Aspiring Moth

Vandy shapers are bad in 1v1 duels, partly because shaping isn't quick enough. while this is less of an issue for sky shapers, there are also situations where they will be limited in the shaping gestures they can make. to cover this weakness, spell impressions that instantly cause some shaping effect should be available. a powerful omnidirectional blast of air centered on vandy would help her if she was surrounded or trapped. rank is hard to judge here since it depends on the strength, but I think it would be useful at C or B rank. too low is useless and too high causes unwanted collateral damage

I feel like there should be a genre for this, cause Wandering Inn is also like this. Slice of warcrimes or something.

Catherine

How is Esh-erdi going to be able to choose what dishes to try?!

Everly could save future thanksgivings with a spell that removes cold from a life-aligned object that would probably be intended to treat frostbite, hypothermia, and Artonans having to deal with freezing temperatures of 80 degrees.

John D Jones

@ JJ Hunter Alden as a waiter is a funny idea, but have you never been to a Pot Luck Supper? There is no "waiter." There's "grab your plates 'n' sporks and spoon as ya go!" Maybe some people pull remove empty serving dishes and replace them with full ones, but that's it.

John D Jones

One thing that's bad for Alden is that there's no real good reason for him to ask people to keep his name out of this. He'll probably try to shove the credit for it toward Kabir and Natalie but they will absolutely make sure Alden gets his share as well.

darkmuch

I wonder is Atonans have a word for Food Coma. Also Alden’s gonna need to make sure he puts little notecards on each dish noting who donated. Or a system note.

JJ Hunter

@John D Jones, I've hosted many potlucks in my day. Potluck on the scale of current Matadero occupancy is more properly a buffet as far as serving and staffing needs go. By referencing Alden helping out with the staffing for this impromptu harvest festival potluck-buffet event as being a 'waiter', I was going for the joke resonance of Alden doing a reprise of his LeafSong Avowed waiter gig, except this time he'd be a wizard Ryeh-b't in disguise as a normal *human* Avowed Ryeh-b't, any resemblance to a wizard Ryeh-b't would be completely coincidental and should be disregarded, etc etc. (Alden the human wizard Ryeh-b't in disguise as [x] is one of those jokes that just gets funnier and funnier with each repetition. I look forward to multiple party variations to come!)

JJ Hunter

Little cards with donor name and any potential allergens would be lovely! Probably more efficient to have the donors write their own to accompany their dishes. They would be a much more cheerful medley than Emban's thoughts-of-sacrifice-imbued bonfire cards for her parents' Summersending feast. :D

Marlkaz

It might increase his notoriety but seemingly not in a way that endangers his secrets. It actually makes his Nonagon riding / extra Matadero days less odd because after getting healed he is helping out like Kabir. Also makes the hero program look good in a non-combat way, helping validate his acceptance.

SkySeeker

Lexi, imagining his roommate situation before starting hero school: "I need to be ready to stay quiet, keep my head down, and focus on my studies. No one else is going to have the kind of drama I have had to deal with after my rank situation, so they won't want to deal with my baggage. Whoever ends up being roommates with me deserves to have a nice, normal school experience without my history dragging them down." Lute, imagining his roommate situation before starting school: "I really hope I can find some nice people to room with who can ignore how messed up my family is. I will just try to stay out of the way, and not drag people into the messy drama from my past." Haoyu, imagining rooming with Lexi before they start hero school: "I need to be ready to cheer him up, and make sure he knows he is part of the group. Neither of the other roommates will have to deal with the kinds of problems he has had, so they might not understand why he is so prickly." (Alden enters the chat) (Alden brings S Rank rabbits, wizard friends, strange skill development, mind controlled cults, a Nine-Edged Son Whose Own Mother Forsakes Him, and a Matadero Thanksgiving Potluck to the conversation.)

SkySeeker

I stayed away because the art looked like it was going to be an edgier writing style than it actually is. Now that I have gotten into the story, I feel like the art actually really fits it well, and not in the way I would have thought before reading it, but this title might have helped offset that initial hesitation for me.

Jim

It's been on his arm under his clothes recently

John D Jones

@ Super Super Supportive Supportive Yeah, but Alden generally doesn't bring any of that stuff into conversations.

John D Jones

@ JJ Hunter Honestly, Emban turning her bonfire cards into weapons of psychological warfare against her family and friends is kind of awesome.

PatienceHoney

@SkySeeker And it was the last one that broke Haoyu and had him thinking that maybe Lexi's feelings regarding Alden's weirdness weren't exaggerated.

John D Jones

@ Marlkaz It won't directly endanger Alden's secrets, no. Still remember the P. T. Barnum quote, "There's no such thing as bad publicity?" For Alden, in a way, there's no such thing as good publicity. Every time Alden attracts attention, especially in a public way, he risks his Intensity 4 life. People get interested in him and eventually one of those interested, curious people is going to pull on just the right (or wrong) thread and reveal one or more of Alden's many secrets.

PatienceHoney

@Aspiring Moth I totally heard the duh duh duuuh sound effect when I read your comment, "The other side of the bald general." 😆

Saaski

Noticed a missing full stop. “Total failure He lost preservation and entrustment the moment he let go of it.”

Marlkaz

My thought was that the thread-pullers will be more likely to lose interest and stop pulling. "Alden is uncommonly likeable" explains some of his oddness without leaving additional threads that need to be pulled. His nonagon-flying, rabbit-in-the-hero-program, Velra-partying all kind of fit into that category.

denatured

Makes me thing about Richard becoming Dick and John becoming Jack. Completely senseless. I was chatting about this irl with a buddy and our baseless theory is: one famous person got an unrelated nickname, that nickname became associated with their real name, people forgot about the famous person but the nickname association stuck. There are so many open questions right now. When's he gonna turn in the driver's license? Is he going to be in trouble for not reporting the deaths of like 5 people? What's esvulgivnas? Why was Jacob at the Velra party? What was Manon doing for Aulia at Leafsong? What's the Elder's Croak about? What's up with the feast prostration? Do griveks have a harvest festival and how far is far enough away?

denatured

Aww this got me thinking about how Lexi would have developed some extra empathy for Lute. What Lexi had to go through for (over?) a year is Lute's entire middle school. I wonder if they talked about it? Lexi doesn't seem like a talker.

denatured

I dunno. He wasn't high-rank and she's such a snob. It seems weird.

Kim Enteiu

Since the reply to being thanked on your esvulivnas is to wish the other person to find someone worthy bragging everything that you are with, I believe esvulivnas is an alignment of affixation by two knights in which they both affix together then stay in close proximity as their authority heals. There might even be an exchange of authority between the two to create a permanent link beyond shared trauma.

Anthony Lutz

The contract already knows about every death, so unlikely any issue there. Prostration after the feast i think is the next step after an chainer uses mass bestowal on you, you feasted, now you prostrate yourself to pay the negative half to prevent snapback possibly with more formality. I think Esvulgivnas is going to be a soul bond of sorts, i forget which chapter it was where esh and lind were first introduced after lind felt alden, i interpreted the conversation between them as though emotions were shared between them, not merely thoughts which could easily be done by contract text messaging. Add to that when stu told alden to congratulate them, the instruction was "congratulate both of them even if your only talking to one of them", as though both are constantly aware of the others experiences.

Alex Scriber

Object shaper is inspired by Alden and starts experimenting with rope-like tools. Nets, guided bolas, and other similar things.

denatured

@Anthony, gotta remember that the contract doesn't work for Earth governments, doesn't enforce those governments' laws, and doesn't report what it knows most of the time. So the system being aware of the deaths doesn't actually solve anything with respect to the Anesidoran legal system. Esh-erdi's the one looking into legal issues, but similarly, he's not a part of the Anesidoran government. He's actually a guest. Alden's in a somewhat precarious spot. In some countries, witnessing a crime of that magnitude and not reporting it is itself a crime. We don't know enough about Anesidoran laws to be sure what Alden's responsibilities are. Alden seems to think he'll be fine but he's also a recent immigrant, so who knows. I guess he did read the USA-to-Anesidora welcome package about significant differences in laws. I wonder if it covered "helped an alien diplomatic assistant kill three avowed in self-defense."

Matt

The plot is getting affixed on Tuesday and needs a break day to recover.

Lee

I think this is the kind of thing that will help Alden because it just the kind of thing a rabbit would do. Organize parties like what the 4th general thinks Alden does. It fits the rabbit shape stereotype and the less dissonance with people's expectations makes Alden's quiet rabbit life more secure.

JJ Hunter

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssss. I really enjoy how they're all trying to be good roommates to each other, but going at it in such different ways. Lexi: *makes sure the trash gets emptied and fixes the recycling. again.* Lute: *practices on his second-best harp so he can use headphones and not disturb anyone* Haoyu: *uses his shiny new slow-cooker to make food to share. some of it is even edible!* Alden: *fetches food on request and uses his skill to bring it preserved at peak deliciousness*

JJ Hunter

On reread, the scene with Kabir tossing Alden trays and dishes is such a fun riff with new variations on Alden's previous catching practice sessions with Big Snake and Stu. Alden has his eyes open this time, but he's working hard on refining exactly what he is and isn't preserving at the instance of catching. Alden's come so far from when preserving at first contact was something he'd never managed before Joe lobbed a fireball at him! And we even got more fun visual effects going this time with all the variations on food and sauce and sticky stuck stuff suddenly eeling off into freefall! Hope some awesome fanartist feels inspired to try capturing some of the likely variations...

Kim Enteiu

The first book of my new web novel will now be titled “What Remains: I Finally Reincarnated Back into My Original World and All I Got Was Immolated”

JJ Hunter

Having just read a neat science article about secretary birds ("a long-legged bird of prey with an appetite for snakes and a phenomenal, skull-crushing kick") and how weird they are re: being so visually focused right through the moment of impacting prey compared to other birds, which typically close their eyes a split second before and switch to sensory limb feedback for any final adjustments*, I'm finding it so interesting how Alden keeps switching which sense he's primarily using to distinguish which part he wants to preserve out of the whole? *ref. "Ninja Eagles On Stilts", Ed Yong @ the Atlantic, permalink via archive.today: https://archive.is/OHfmQ Alden doesn't know how to sense the plate proper separately from the stuff on it yet using just his authority, so he needs his eyes open to do it visually first. He's also trying out all these interesting variations on trying to do the same trick with a stack or shifting from physically held to trying to replicate the authority hold at a distance trick. Not all of the experiments are successful! but this honestly seems like just as much of a flow state he's fully engaged with and enjoying as his earlier earring-aided auriad study session. Kabir has a mighty need, and Alden doing this is making rapid, tangible progress on addressing that need, and together they are not fighting crime but proving to be a surprisingly successful potluck-planning duo. Not all heroes dress up in spandex! Some of them staff the cafeteria and keep the wizards fed.

DAK

-like the others here said, esvulgivnas is probably a tandem affixation that results in a closeness of selves. There is an implication that some thoughts or emotions can be read off each other. From Ripples II: *The Avowed had been training together. They were dedicated to the task. And the way they used their skills was…workmanlike. His partner made a pointed noise in the back of her throat. Perhaps his last thought had been gleaned. Or she had anticipated it. “He is interesting,” she said softly.* Both would probably have to be knights deliberately affixing together and probably with additional ritual. It seems inevitable for Stu and Alden, but I’m just guessing it wouldn’t be possible until after Alden makes his situation known. Assuming Mother doesn’t meddle and they both just ‘happen’ to be affixing at the same time and end up in the same room drinking hot chocolate with automatically replenishing marshmallows…

Aspiring Moth

Marciel A ground shaping skill specialised in coating non ground element things in dust/dirt/etc, allowing them to be moved with finesse. It would need to be on the higher end of the rank scale to have enough lifting power to be useful. Maybe B or A rank

DAK

-Slaughter festival. Thanks would be rude as it implies you didn’t do enough of your own work and therefore need to share. Like a child. I believe Slaughterstaking is celebrated in one locale in lighthearted memory of the annihilation of some well meaning would-be colonizers that just weren’t strong enough to cut it.

Simon

LOVING the light hearted character descriptions. Intimidating? Him? 😂😂😂

Desidia

Poor rugs, I wonder if Alden notices the bald spots.

Aspiring Moth

Natalie She should take Hadiza's object beautification skill to make her dishes look perfect. Hadiza was able to use it on ice cream back in intake, so it does work on food. it's C rank, so she can probably get it in the next couple of levels. Narratively, it continues the theme of lower ranks feeling inferior, because an S rank can take a C rank's core skill as a throwaway add on

Aspiring Moth

Njeri A spell impression that draws moisture out of the air into a blob of water in front of her. This helps cover one of the major weaknesses of water shapers, namely not always being around water. It's probably not possible to estimate a rank for this because we don't know of a similar effect, and it also depends on the size of the area that moisture is being drawn from

Aspiring Moth

Njeri A water shaping skill specialised in phase changing water. turning water into ice/steam/mist massively widens her capabilities ice no more crappy water shield from when she was trying to block tennis balls. a solid is infinitely better for shielding, and would allow for applications like flying on an ice block, restraining targets, and shooting shards of ice. we know water shapers can move ice from the 'workshop' in the obstacle course chapters steam unlike water, steam is directly damaging without putting a huge amount of kinetic force behind it. being able to burn enemies or deny them by putting something that would burn in their way is huge mist not only does it obscure vision, it surrounds the enemy with water. surrounding the enemy with your element means the battle is on your terms. this also has some sensory capabilities, similar to the life shaper for the B list. She would be able to sense people in the dark based on the water in the air this skill could be any rank other than D/F honestly, but it doesn't need to be that powerful to do its job so I'll put it at C rank. it could even be three separate skills and still be worth it, probably ice > mist > steam in terms of usefulness

John D Jones

@ denatured Jacob wasn't Hazel's boyfriend. He was basically an escort that she didn't have to pay. A servant. So it fits.

denatured

@DAK But Alden doesn't know any of the inner-thoughts stuff we've been privy to between Esh and Lind. So it's still a big mystery to him. Someone has to tell him in-story, and then we can finally get the details. There's been plenty of hints for us. And almost none for Alden. Do you think Mother has been working towards orchestrating an esvulgivnas for Stu this whole time? Her conversation with Alden about Stu's chances was not very reassuring given how she referenced Alden's chances in the light chaos breeze. Alden still doesn't know how many zeros were after the point. It was a lot of zeros. Stu's chances without help might be pretty crap, too.

denatured

@John I'm still stuck on the moment Hazel makes the decision to call him for this purpose. Was she looking for things to do to emphasize he was under her thumb? Did she have instructions to keep him close? Was Aulia aware of the theft of the sinker sender, but not aware it would be used like it was? Maybe she had some other nefarious plan in motion. It doesn't seem like Hazel would be desperate for company. In all of Lute's flashbacks she's got sycophants aplenty. If she just wanted an escort I doubt she'd need to dig this deep in such a weird direction. Though maybe her social circle evaporated after she got her B. So I'm still not sure about the motivations that led to that situation. See? Questions!

DAK

@denatured—true, that is all out-of-story speculation based on conversations Alden isn’t privy to. More is going to have to be explained to us and certainly to him. The projected timelines all feel out of synch—Alden has 8-12 months for next affixation, Alden won’t tell anyone for as long as possible, Alden asked for level 4 intensity for at least 2 years initially and Mother probably took that seriously, but Mother did say he should share it with someone earlier; no knight should do it alone—Artonans even have dedicated wizards (votaries) largely to get knights through the process. He shouldn’t tell anyone. Because politics. Larger cohort knight groups survive longer. He CANNOT keep it secret forever anyway. Stu only put off his affixation a ‘little longer’, etc, etc. I think it is probably leading towards earlier than expected esvulgivnas for the two of them—As nasty as Alden’s experience was, I have a gut feeling he’s probably able to deal with affixation better than most Artonans — and combo-affixation is likely Stu’s best path to survival. It’s all speculation, so who knows…

JJ Hunter

@DAK, it seems very likely that Alden will be getting confidential Healer of Mind support very soon; I would be surprised if Alden didn't take his cue from Mother's assurances to share his secrets with them. Given there is a solid support option of lower intensity imminently available to Alden, and that Stu hasn't even had his first affixation yet, esvulgivnas between Alden and Stu within the next year seems pretty far-fetched to me. I don't think esvulgivnas is something Stu or Alden would even think of in relation to each other at this stage, they're still weaving their initial friendship and having wistful thoughts about maybe someday even making a friendship of oath together.

Joel Wells

Is anyone else excited for the Thanksgiving gathering? It seems every time Alden attends a celebration or party somthing interesting happens. Leafsong party = Meets Primary, followed by moon disaster. Velra’s birthday party = Hazel melts down, then kills someone. I can’t wait to see what happens.

Kim Enteiu

Alden is summoned into a situation that is exponentially worse than he is expecting, as soon as it’s resolved he immediately runs into an art’h. Summoned for a medical emergency, surprise horrific water monster, Primary. Summoned for berry picking, surprise chaos storm, Alis-art’h. Summoned for early evacuation, surprise terrible human avowed, surprise here’s another injured Artonan to carry in a ridiculous marathon of water and pain, Summoned to the art’h rapport & meet two art’hs.

denatured

There's @Unavowed's prediction that Bash-nor will make his grand entrance... I'm looking forward to observing some wizard-class Social Dynamics!

Faces The Wind

I cannot overstate my gratitude for Sleyca in having not indulged in romance with the recently traumatized MC. Trauma romance arcs are demeaning and I am deeply grateful to find a story that has the courage to not reduce their MC to a horny boy trope in the middle of an on-point portrayal of healing through trauma via friendship and good adults.

Faces The Wind

Crazy thought, the perpetually horny boy trope might not be a good barometer of MC sexuality. We have a really well written teenager dealing with multiple traumas, too much unwanted attention, and ongoing crisis. I'm finding the lack of focus on libido more true to life than indicative of character libido. All that said ship or anti-ship as you will. I Ship Victor and other Alden as cuddle buddies one day so whatever.

Phlinn

Alden needs to stick around for the wizards potluck, and purchase a chef uniform with his commendation on it from the system. Can you imagine the mental disconnect of someone with a commendation for fighting chaos serving them perfectly preserved food?

Robert Mullins

Normally and on most other stories I'd 100% agree with you. But Alden being asexual has been a strongly supported theory since the first 2 dozen chapters.

Stylemys

Also remember what the tattooist said to Aulia. During conflicts, the stronger individual’s interpretation wins out. Good ole’ Aulia would definitely think she’s stronger than all the young whippersnappers on the Council. They’d be bound to HER view of their responsibilities to Andesoria.

John D Jones

@ denatured Hazel Had plenty of sycophant, emphasis past tense. Hazel was expected to be the Super-S-Rank Chainer Goddess of Kingdom Come. So per what we know about Lexi, Hazel's social circle evaporated after she got her "B." Figure if Aulia Velra wanted to get a Sinker-Sender to SAL, she wouldn't use her own druggie relative and some C-rank Wright known for trying to flee Anesidora. Also, I think it's pretty clear given what she tried to do with Alden that Hazel is someone who to have control. Control of her circumstances and control of other people. Jacob is a date she can control. He'll roll around in dirt to fit the "Glitter and Grunge" theme. He won't leave her to hit on her (probably hotter/cuter) cousin, Miyo. She can control him in a way that she clearly can't control herself.

Kim Enteiu

I had something I wanted to suggest from the wardrobe & I FORGOT ABOUT THE TATTOOIST’S ASSISTANT OUTFIT. Now I’m picturing him waiting tables while wearing a lavender jumpsuit covered in awkwardly placed leather straps. Clear window to see his navel. Bejewled gas mask. With the commendation embroidered on the sleeve. I’m dying. He’s wearing it in hopes of scamming a free lesson in contract tattoos from someone.

Anon.

It may produce some amusing reactions from Stu's family if it somehow makes Artonan news.

DAK

@JJHunter—I don’t disagree at all, there are just a lot of ways this could go…. I will drop this quote from a couple chapters ago: “And our parents all hope we’ll find the same thing Lind-otta and Esh-erdi have found in each other. It’s rare, especially at their age. Most of the successes so far have been between younger people who’ve been close to each other from their early childhood.” While Alden and Stu may well not be close enough in general, it seems like age and advancement may actually work against successful esvulgivnas.

Alex Scriber

“ The vessel should be completely able to resist Submerger particles” It is a very human and believable action to solve a problem after it causes a disaster. That doesn’t make closing the barn doors after the horses already escaped any smarter. It’s interesting that Arronans have the same bad habit. The next disaster on Anesidora isn’t likely to be submerger related again. It’ll be something completely different; so the anti-submerger enchantment mentioned at the start of the chapter is almost surely a complete waste, and arguably even counterproductive since it takes resources away from things more likely to be useful. Granted, it probably does make people feel safer.

Sashani

It's only unnecessary if all submerger particles have been neutralized. Since the particles were dispersed over a wide area of ocean, they could be a valid concern for years. If a single submerger particle can sink a boat, it is a very real and immediate concern.

Jim

Wouldn't it be funny, if Kabir tossed Alden a plate, Alden preserved just the plate, and then got splattered with the leftovers as their momentum continued on?

Guus van der Borg

Why are they demeaning though? Going through a suspenseful situation with someone of the attracted sex is scientifically proven to increase the odds of infatuation. Dangerous situations make people horny. It's been proven. Likely an evolutionary response to leave more offspring during dangerous times. (So more of them can get killed without the tribe as a whole perishing). Why would it be demeaning? Heck, if Alden wasn't pretty much confirmed to be asexual I'd find it odd if he DIDN'T get horny. Not saying it should happen even if you have a character with an active sex drive, the narrative comes before realism imo. But why would be 'demeaning'? That sounds like a strong judgement of a natural biological process.

Jacob was Hazel’s “trash” to go with her treasure, or however the theme of the party went. The “he’s a c-rank globie” introduction was like explaining your obscure-reference Halloween costume.

Alex Scriber

“ The potency of the partial preservation power is probably prodigious. ” Prettily phrased.

J Reynolds

Alden will have to find out from Kabir on Friday whether the potluck was a success or not, since he's presumably going to take the food to Matadero, then zip back to Natalie's Thanksgiving feast.

Alex Scriber

Small amounts of submerger particles are not dangerous. This was demonstrated on the bridge. In one scene there were enough submerger particles to surround a shoe in water but not enough to move it. The bridge scene has tons of examples of different numbers of submerger particles. Only the most concentrated quantities were dangerous.

Gregory

Jeffy really should have all the points in processing that he can since S brutes probably get over a hundred points and your investment in processing is capped at, like, 2 at a time.

R. Maxwell Steele

Or smuggle Natalie's entire party group over to Matadero (under orders from Hn’tyon Esh-erdi that he being them all because he requires Alden's presence).

JJ Hunter

I'm excited for Alden to sidestep potential Thanksgiving Potluck drama by leaving for Natalie's Thanksgiving first, only to encounter Emilija's strong opinions about meat-thievin' vegans.

JJ Hunter

@Alex Scriber - depends on the location of the particle. It only took one mote to steal Alden's boot and him with it when his legs were immersed in water.

Faces The Wind

First, asexual does not equate to lack of sex drive, just as lack of sex drive does not equate to asexuality. If that concept confuses you that is ok, you don't need to understand every way of being different to be accepting of them. As for why it is demeaning to have your character who is at the very least not rushing into sex at an early age (some people are still virgins all the way to the wedding night ya know) start horning after their friends at inappropriate (to their friends) moments as though that was the meaningful part of who they were that needed to be transmitted to the audience at that moment... its hard to find words. Honestly, that you don't get it is not as confusing to me as your argument about trauma bonding which should be rightfully directed at Stu, Zeridee, or Kibby if your point is to be taken at face value. Most appropriately it would be Kibby who had the time to trauma bond with him... I hope you can see how that might be inappropriate and potentially lower his moral caliber in the eyes of the audience for that trauma bond to translate into sexuality. He is young but romance is far from the primary concern in his life, he has serious issues that he is addressing not the least of which is achieving equalibrium within himself. If he were to figure himself out before initiating that would be high moral character.

Anthony Lutz

The only way to smuggle everyone in without "requiring" a tattoo before leaving is for alden to preserve and carry everyone directly into the cafeteria so they do not learn anything about mataderos layout. A direct teleport could work but the system seems to prefer going to/from sumonariums. I doubt they will get to visit, its supposed to be a safe space for the wizards after all

PatienceHoney

And I wonder exactly how often Haoyu has to trim the rug. We only get snippets of time with him, but he has been "cleaning" the rug quite often...

I'm surprised it hasn't come up yet where Alden is eating with a group and is served something "vegan" but has some animal product in it and Alden has to come up with some reason why he suddenly can't eat the food he just ordered. Because saying you can just look and tell it isn't vegan is kinda insane.

The military complex is very much dominated by the banking/telecom sector. These sectors are ofc in for very large changes that would meet resistance (at least people would try that is). Modern war is 80% information, 15% economic and 5% weapons.

JJ Hunter

@DAK, I read that section as indicating that esvulgivnas requires an exceptional degree of intimacy to be successful. Younger people tend to have an easier time being open and vulnerable together in a way that enables growing that close over time; established adults are more set in their character and their secrets, and achieving that degree of closeness with someone new with whom they aren't already very close friends with is exceptionally difficult. Which is all to say: I do agree that Alden and Stu may have a shot at doing this successfully together someday if they continue to weave friendship on the arc they've been doing; they are becoming close friends unusually fast, and they're at the right age to still be highly flexible in ways most adults no longer are, which makes it easier to grow intimacy quickly, and adapt to major changes in circumstances more gracefully. I still think friendship of oath and Alden telling Stu all his secrets are going to be important prerequisite milestones to reach first, and that it's important for Stu's first affixation to be wholly about Stu and his self-concept to ensure a good foundation. Excited to see what happens from here!

*sniff sniff* "I smell the animals! The animals did not consent!"

puppy0cam

I was about to say that Alden is safe from some annoyed fast food employee spitting in his food, but no, they kinda would have consented to having their bodily products consumed by Alden by putting it in his food.

HAOYU Big Kahuna Burger. That's that Hawaiian burger joint. I heard they got some tasty burgers. I ain't ever had one myself, how are they? WINSTON They're good. HAOYU Mind if I try one of yours? WINSTON No. HAOYU Yours is this one, right? WINSTON Yeah. [Haoyu grabs the burger and takes a bite of it.] HAOYU Uuummmm, that's a tasty burger. (to Alden) Alden, you ever try a Big Kahuna Burger? ALDEN No. [Haoyu holds out the Big Kahuna.] HAOYU You wanna bite, they're real good. ALDEN I ain't hungry. HAOYU Well, if you like hamburgers give 'em a try sometime. Me, I can't usually eat 'em 'cause my girlfriend's a vegetarian. Which more or less makes me a vegetarian, but I sure love the taste of a good burger. (to Winston) You know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Anisdora?

Aspiring Moth

Soren a spell impression that widens his visual perception range, allowing him to see infra red. Has applications in tracking people and seeing people in darkness or through cover. Probably D or C rank, given that the B rank meister of cudgel (I forget his name) aims to get sensory widening spells in his school career, so they must be relatively low rank

Aspiring Moth

Astrid A skill allowing for functional beastial body parts, probably canine or feline ones as a lower rank skill. the likes of eyes with the reflective layer that cats have for night vision, claws, a tail etc. based on her love of dangerous wildlife. D or C rank, it doesn't need to be that powerful

Aspiring Moth

Lucielle A skill that allows her punches to directly attack the authority of the target, causing them to collapse from authority exhaustion rather than explode due to the brute force (ha) behind them. authority seems to have a passive defence property, as displayed by higher ranks being more resistant to lower level sways and the likes of manon. I see no reason why there couldn't be a skill aimed at targeting this defence directly. Given that it is translating the force of her physical blows, the higher rank the better so it can do more damage. the perfect skill for a no kill hero. also the perfect crutch to rely on until it gets exhausted mid punch, causing her to turn someone to paste anyway

Aspiring Moth

Jupiter, or more likely the B rank life shaper from the B list a life shaping skill specialised in making plants produce and emit pollen with special effects. I'm thinking sleep powder, poison powder, stun powder as in pokemon. it gives another solution to encounters other than brute force. I'll estimate C rank for these effects, but higher ranks may be more resistant so in that case higher is better

Aspiring Moth

Finlay or Winston A spell impression that covers their feet in an effect similar to Alden's trait, allowing them to run across water assuming they move fast enough. D rank, based on the fact that a C rank spell impression is enough for flight

Aspiring Moth

Max A skill that gives his zones a whitelist. His current skill allows him to turn down or up the effects of his zones on himself only, this skill would allow him to make a zone only effect himself and selected others. since it isn't fighting the spell impressions in the same way his core skill is, I'll estimate D or C rank

Aspiring Moth

Soren A skill specialised in shifting the spectrum of light. the most obvious application is making zones of apparent darkness, but it could also be used for things like jamming radio communications (or with more skill sending messages to radio receivers), offensive blasts of infra red, gamma and microwaves etc. This one doesn't need to be super powerful, so C rank as the default for shaper skills that aren't terrible

Aspiring Moth

Mehdi A skill that accelerates his perception. this allows him to make the most of his agility and perform seemingly impossible stunts. His core danger sense skill gives him a constant passive danger sense in an area around him, but this just overclocking his brain effectively. I'll estimate it at C or B rank

Aspiring Moth

Natalie A skill that allows her to change the flavour profile of things, such as making healthy food taste sweet like desert. she specifically mentioned wanting something like this. Manon mentioned having skills for things like textile colour change, and this is a similar effect. so I'll estimate D rank

Aspiring Moth

Haoyu A passive that causes his wounds to heal much quicker than normal. we don't know much about passives yet, but this fits within the theme of the stamina brute

denatured

Almost everything has bug bits in it. So either Sleyca is blissfully unaware of the realities of agriculture, or the Gremlin has a tolerance threshold of some sort.

Barrett Fogarty

Where i live in Canada, flocks of wild turkeys roam the countryside. They lean low and run across the furrows pretending we can't see them. And when we put on our tuques and go outside walking, the turkeys hide in the bushes and chuckle as we go by. The idea of Kabir and Alden finding Natalie’s magic turkey does not seem so strange.

SkySeeker

So, random question. Do we know Kabir's country of origin? I have kind of been thinking of him as being from the Middle East/North African region because his name means "great" in Arabic, but then I thought I remembered some reference to him speaking Spanish as his native language a long while back.

denatured

Maybe he was born on Anesidora? I bet a very large percentage of native born Anesidorans have multicultural heritage.

JJ Hunter

I hope Drusi-otta is still on Alden protection duty whenever he zooms back over to Anesidora. Alden may need some backup on guarding Natalie's magic- and butter-basted turkey long enough to get it safely back to Matadero and Kabir.

Aspiring Moth

Maybe Andalusia in Spain then? the Muslims ruled that area for a very long time, so I can see Arab influences on names remaining even hundreds of years later

Kim Enteiu

Someone milks a cow “the cow did not give me this milk.” A bug throws itself into food refining machinery “it must have wanted to become one with us, so great was its desire that it sacrificed itself to feed hundreds.”

What I particularly love about this story atm is, after thinking about it, everything.

Polaris

I thought gremlin was fine with crickets and other insects

Inu

Sleyca, if you need help with portuguese I speak the language, Im from Brazil, in case you're ever in need for a dialogue involving Gustavo :)

Alex Iskandar

It was mentioned in the chapter with Gorgon. Insects are fine for some reason. That's why Gorgon could eat them.

Alex Iskandar

I wouldn't say it is demeaning but rather dubious. As someone from health care I personally always felt trauma romance as something dubious. Imo instead of a partner what you need is a therapist. Your partner is not your therapist and a relationship with someone who has mental baggage is very challenging and can easily go wrong. And let's not have a partner that doubles as a therapist. I don't think I have to explain why that's not a very good idea.

hypervion

Kabir is pretty clearly shown to be Pakistani/Indian right? He does speak Urdu if I remember correctly

puppy0cam

leave my innocent (not really innocent anymore...) armpit alone!

ImNotHere

Insect should be fine but teh gremlin does not know and won't let Gorgon eat the crickets. He ate the fly because she "offered" itself to him C51 Take Me Somewhere Else [“Wait. If that’s how it judges food…how did you eat the fly? Did it give itself to you?” “Asking the critical questions in our last few seconds together, are we?” Gorgon said dryly. “If I hold them in my mouth long enough, they eventually fly or crawl far enough down my throat on their own for my digestive juices to dissolve them.” “…okay.” “It was bothering me.” “You could have swatted it instead of having a religious experience with it.” His four nostrils flared. “I just said, didn’t I? The Rite won’t trigger for a fly. Maybe for some Earth animals. Not sure. To be honest, I have some concerns about octopuses. But most of your wildlife should be comestible. I’m trying to teach them that. One stolen bite at a time. My restrictions are making it a slow process.”]

I wonder if Neha is one of Aulia's friends among the originals? How many originals were there originally, and how many are still alive today? Were they predominantly all S-ranked or did the System select a range from the start?

VP

24 hours to go!! Let's gooo

Aspiring Moth

If she is, I can see neha mentioning that the moon rabbit who was in the news got a commendation for the ordeal to Aulia in passing. it would help explain Aulia's behaviour at the party. she believes in messages from the universe, but to throw her own granddaughter under the bus while exposing class secrets is a bit far for just thinking Alden has some significance. knowing that he has the highest commendation of any human also explains why Manon noticed that she wanted the party to suit Alden more than anything else
