Cold salty gusts buffeted Kai’s face, carrying denser mana than anywhere in the Shallow Sea. They weren’t sailing through a unique area like the Veeryd Jungle, just a random stretch of ocean. That more than anything made the realization sink in.

He wasn’t in the archipelago anymore.

No matter how much he boosted his senses with Body Augmentation and squinted, he couldn’t spot a speck of land. There were only churning waves, far darker than the aquamarine waters of his home.

Leaning on the starboard of the Intrepid, Kai pushed Mana Observer to its limit without coming close to brushing the seafloor. Occasionally a red or orange marine creature touched his perception. The beasts didn’t even notice the ship thanks to its wards.

Everything was so much different from what he was used to, the only thing that came close was the…

Nope! His fingers tightened around the railing. That stupid nightmare had thrown him off balance. Brain, we’re not going there. This is perfectly safe, the—

“Mat, my boy.” Captain Nathumeli walked up to him, curling his mustache. “Staring into the dark depths, eh? Just don’t look too deep, or something might stare back at you.” The man guffawed, holding his gut.

He’s joking, right?

“I’ll be careful…” Kai deactivated his skill; he didn’t need more fuel for his nightmares.

“Have you thought about my offer?” Nathumeli adjusted the feathered tricorn hat he wore today. “Nothing’s freeing like sailing the open seas. And there is plenty of experience and coin to be gained.”

“I can’t accept.” Kai said, not for the first time. “I’ve already made commitments in Arphusa when we land.”

“I see, I see. You’re a man of your word. That’s good.” Nathumeli peered at him with a cunning eye. “Let me know if you change your mind. I can always find a use for a young man of your skills in my crew.” The captain marched away, boots snapping on the wood of the deck.

Kai returned to contemplate the waves, determined not to avert his gaze till his guts stopped wrenching. If his subconscious thought it could be more stubborn than him, he was ready to take up the challenge.

I’m not going to be scared of what might or might not lurk in the ocean depths…

“Look at you, already making new friends.” Flynn sauntered beside him, casually leaning with his back on the starboard railing. A crackling static danced between his fingers. He was still in high spirits since raising his Lightning affinity by 6 points to 53 and Shadow by 4 to 58. “I’m so proud.”

“Thanks.” Kai set his gaze on the horizon, the wind whistling in his ears. “Though Nathumeli’s just looking for cheap labor.”

Last night, he had offered to fix the temperature enchantments of the dining hall and brewed a potion for seasickness to stop a lady from vomiting. Any novice alchemist and enchanter could have accomplished the same, but the man had been set on recruiting him

I should drop the naive act…

He had been planning to gradually change Mat’s personality to fit his own. Looking innocent was a double-edged sword. It stopped people from looking too deeply, but it could also invite sharks. A journey to the mainland after a lifetime of isolation would provide an excellent excuse for the transformation.

Flynn twiddled with an enchanted disk that muffled the whistling of the winds and their voice from traveling far. “Nathumeli seems an alright guy as far as seamen go. He just has an eye for bargains. I would offer you advice, but you’re doing pretty well with your new identity.”

“Hmm… am I really?”

“Of course, young Mat. How could you doubt your master?” Flynn puffed his chest. “Even with an acting skill, most people would forget to respond to their name or blurt something they shouldn’t. But I’ve not seen you slip even once.”

I guess I’ve been channeling my old self.

Being often sickly and alone made him quite skittish in his previous life. He must have fallen into the old patterns to interpret Mat, the recluse alchemist. “It was quite easy.”

“From humble to boasting.” Flynn snorted with a crooked grin. “I wouldn’t accept anything less from my apprentice.”

“Hmm… it’s not that. I—” Kai let his eyes wander off the waters.

The muffling enchantment made everything appear distant. Apart from the sailors on duty, most people had taken shelter from the harsh winds below deck. The closest person was the Air blower, a withered old woman who seemed to stand only thanks to the gust she summoned. The white sails of the Intrepid were drawn tight, propelling the vessel at a swift speed despite its size.

It’s only going to get more awkward if I tell him in the future…

The matter had been on his mind since Flynn welcomed him back like not a day had passed. With one ear to heed any whispers of warning, Kai made his decision. “It’s not the first time I’ve used this name.”

“Huh? What do you mean? Have you already faked your identity before?”

“Not exactly. This isn’t the first life I remember…” Kai delved into the circumstances of his second birth and his past life.

The words came in a flood. Afraid that if he would stop he would never get the courage to continue, he rambled about every detail that came to mind till his thoughts were empty.

Kai looked at his friend, readying for his reaction. “Please, say something.”

“Uhm,” Flynn scanned him from head to toe. “That makes perfect sense.”

That wasn’t among the reactions he had considered. Kai searched his gaze for any distrustful look, but there was only his usual mischievous glimmer. “Does it…?”

“Yes!” He emphatically nodded. “How else could you become stronger than me unless you cheated? It also explains your weirdness and strange sayings. And I mean it in the best way possible.”

Thanks…

“I— I’ve not cheated. I didn’t choose for it to happen.”

“Right… Whatever helps you sleep at night, bud.” Flynn ruffled his hair with an irritating smile. “But you're most definitely a cheater. I’m quite the expert on the matter.”

“You… You’re just envious.” Kai stammered, unsure how the conversation had gotten there.

“Is that the way to talk to your big brother? I thought I taught you better than that.” He covered his eyes with an arm as if he couldn’t bear to watch him.

“I’m older than you.”

“Are you though?” Flynn stood up to highlight his height advantage. “I’m older than you’ve ever grown.”

“By maybe a few months.” Kai rolled his eyes.

I rambled too many details.

“The difference is only going to increase. Besides that, have you ever held a job for more than a couple of months? Curse at the taxes you pay to the Republic? Got a girlfriend? And no, holding hands when you were a toddler doesn’t count.”

“I’ve—”

“Exactly my point. You’ve never lived as an adult, so I’m still your big brother.” Flynn concluded with a triumphant grin.

Understanding there was no point in arguing, Kai resigned to his logic. His worries about his confession already forgotten. “Fine. But I’m not calling you that.”

  *

Darkness, his body crushed by overwhelming pressure, furious whispers telling him to run. Kai desperately swam in the direction he hoped was the surface, lungs burning for oxygen.

He had no idea how he got here and no mind to care amidst the growing panic. A suffocating aura of danger froze his blood. Hallowed Intuition yelled at him to flee faster as some humongous monster made the water sway below him.

A pinprick of light shone in the distance. Hope. Salvation. Already exhausted and numb, Kai forced his limbs to paddle faster through sheer force of will. His hands grasped at stringy pale kelps to pull himself up. The glow grew brighter.

Almost th—

A piercing pain shot up in his leg. Something caught him, digging into his flesh and dragging him towards the bottomless depths. Darkness covered the light. Kai struggled to free himself with all his Strength, summoning blades of water and swinging his sword at the monster.

His efforts were useless. Hooks ripped into his torso; screams silenced by the waters till his body grew too heavy to move. Dragged deeper. And deeper…

I can’t—

Kai flailed in his bed, heaving for breath. The sheets were drenched in cold sweat. He searched for the phantom wounds, gloom and death still lingering in his thoughts.

Another fucking nightmare.

His fists clenched, but there was nothing he could punch. He slammed his hand on the control disk to increase the temperature of his cabin and drive away the cold from his bones.

“Why can’t they leave me the fuck alone—”

The cabin suddenly tilted, the enchanted wood of the Intrepid creaking around him. Kai slammed his hands down, nearly smacking his skull on the floorboards. The foreboding feeling in his head wasn’t just the dregs of a nightmare, but murmurs of danger.

Just what I needed.

He quickly put on a shirt and went outside, leaning against the wall as the ship slanted in the opposite direction. The narrow corridor was filled with the cries of the other passengers wondering what was going on.

Flynn stumbled out of his cabin with a head of messy hair and only one boot. “What’s going on?” He yelled over the clamor.

“Nothing good.” Kai made his way through the panicking group, determined to find someone who could answer. More and more passengers poured in his path till he was pressed against a wall, forced to push with his back against the crowd to not crush a little girl who got lost in the chaos.

“Silence.” A commanding voice thundered, carrying the weight of a powerful skill. The mass of people fell in line, the quiet only disturbed by pained moans and the groans of the ship.

Captain Gestulf Nathumeli stood on the stairs to the deck as if the floor tilting below him was no concern. “It’s just a little rough sea, gents. Nothing to worry about. The Intrepid has survived far worse mana storms. Please, remain in your cabins and let my crew do their job.”

“I didn’t pay a silver ticket for this treatment!” A woman wearing a nightgown embroidered with roses stood from the crowd. “How long are we expected to stay in the storm?”

“However long is necessary to assure the safety of the vessel.” Nathumeli silenced her with a glare. “That was everything, gents. Anyone who endangers my crew with their reckless behavior better be a great swimmer.” He left without giving them another chance to reply.

A pair of drenched sailors blocked anyone from following. The veil of calm lasted two split seconds before another salvo of fruitless demands broke it.

Kahali bless me, I’m not dying in a stupid storm.

Throwing a sympathetic glance at the duo holding back the crowd, Kai joined the group of passengers streaming back into their cabin. Despite his frustration, there was nothing he could do to help. He was no sailor, and he certainly had no idea how to steer a ship of this size. He briefly chatted with Flynn before they both retired back to their cabin.

Whispers swirled in his head, just loud enough to prevent any chance of sleep. His stomach clenched each time the Intrepid tilted while his mind conjured countless scenarios where the ship sank, drowning him.

By the time the storm settled, dawn had already risen. Kai resigned himself to survive on a couple hours of rest. The ship stank of vomit outside his cabin. Apparently, reaching Orange and Yellow didn’t make people immune to nausea, though that wasn’t what bothered him.

I must have used all my luck to get the ID…

Flynn merrily devoured a plate of sausages and scrambled eggs in the dining hall. “You look like crap,” he greeted.

“Thanks.” Kai combed a hand through his unruly locks. “Have you seen the captain?”

“Hmm, he should be on the quarterdeck, though it might be better if you wait to see him. He wasn’t in a great mood after the mess in the cabins.”

“I’ll take the risk.” Kai walked outside, the crisp morning breeze blowing in his face. He squinted in the bright light to reorient himself.

“Wait for me!” Flynn hurried after him, cheeks full like a squirrel. “Whwy… dow ‘ou… need him?

“They’re not getting better.”

“‘Ou mean…?”

“The whispers. I thought they would quieten once the storm had passed, but they’re still there. A little louder.”

Flynn beat his chest to gulp down the food. “Should I worry?”

“I don’t know, maybe? It could be nothing, but we’re moving straight to it.” He finally spotted a feathered hat and headed toward it.

Hallowed Intuition was particularly stingy with details. Not all warnings realized or indicated a deadly danger. It could be another storm or a green beast that might or might not cross their path. Being hundreds of miles from any land, Kai wasn’t inclined to take the risk if he could avoid it. “Captain. May I speak with you?”

Nathumeli turned toward him and half softened his scowl. “Young Mat, have you decided to accept my offer?”

“No, I—.”

“That’s a pity.” His expression darkened. “I’d love to chat, but the storm pushed us two days off course. And you must have smelled the other passengers.”

“It will take just a second.” Kai stepped in his way, quickly making up his mind. “I’ve got a skill that’s telling me we’re heading straight into danger.”

The man stopped to study him before clapping his back with a fond smile. “I appreciate your enthusiasm, but danger skills are notoriously unreliable at sea. Trust me, I’ve got quite a high-leveled one myself.” Nathumeli winked. “The mana storm must have messed with yours. It happens. But we must reach Arphusa in a timely manner.”

Kai could only stand there as the captain went to talk to his crew. He hadn’t expected they would turn the ship around for him, not without a careful interrogation of his skill, but to be so thoroughly dismissed…

Dammit.

Flynn raised his hands in a pacifying gesture. “Don’t hate me, but he might be right. He knows the sea better than us. My Hunch has been acting weird since the storm.”

“Yeah, maybe.” Kai crossed his fingers. If the captain didn’t want to listen, insisting would get him nothing. And he couldn’t just leave or swim away.

“Why don’t you go get breakfast? It’s quite good and an empty stomach won’t do you any good.”

“I’m not hungry.” The idea of food made him nauseous. “I’ll stay here for a while.”

“Then I’ll wait with you.”

Kai was about to say it wasn’t necessary, though some company might help his nerves. “Thanks.”

They found a place to sit near the prow, perusing the cloudy horizon. The whispers continued to loom, persistent without ever reaching the worried heights he experienced daily in the Sanctuary.

Kai was about to accept Nathumeli was right when a shout rose from the sailor in the crow's nest. “Pirates!”

A/N: See you on July 1 (announcement on the previous chapter). I gotta prepare for the editing marathon of book 2 :)

Have a great weekend!

Doctor Black

First Tftc! Not the cliffhanger!!

Jeff Barton

I think you mean July 1st. ;) Unless you want a year off!

Aceluke

Oh shit, pirates! I hope Kai can stomach ending a few human lives. Not sure how he’ll do

YUMYbread

🚢🏴‍☠️

Nathan Sto

Poor guy. He keeps telling his big secret, and people keep laughing it off. Shame to have such good friends.

Ottstop

TYFTC! The veil of calm lasted two split seconds before another salvo t of fruitless demands broke it.  —> get rid of the t The bottom says you’ll see us on June 1st.

Ottstop

Also god damn cliffhanger lmao

saltyApple

nice chapter! Ive said before I think Kai would make a great pirate. Unforutnately he hates boats... also I have conflicting feelings over him revealing his secret only bc i still have distrust towards Flynn. I love the guy but the signs are just there and I cant ignore them. That or Im wrong. Idk!

Stephen Pearson

He's killed pirates before without much remorse. If anything he probably reviles pirates after that experience...

Hah, I was betting on pirates

Disclancer

June 1st!?? You want us to wait a year hanging from that cliff!???

Blake N.

Fairly sure you meant July 1st unless you’re taking the next year off

PlasmaticPi

Did he ever get back his amulet from that one enchanter that wanted to borrow it to study it in exchange for enchanting the swords and a loan of some replacement earrings?

Eric M

It stinks that he is going to blow his cover just a couple weeks after he got it in place.

Eric M

The only way I see Flynn betraying Kai is if he also abducts Hobbes, and it is April Fools Day.

saltyApple

the signs tho. I just talked about this in a comment on the previous chapter so just gonna copypaste "He has kai to thank for a lot but also has a lot of pride and wants to pay kai back AND one-up him at the same time...Hes already been a double agent with the Voice and generally plays on both sides, all the time. Even his affinities are white and black. He BACKSTABBED thaht guy in the woods... i mean....foreshadowing????"...... So u can see why i might find him a tad sus. I still love his character generally tho.

SkyGold

I'm sure he did, he ended his apprenticeship with him after all

Andrew

Thank you!

PlasmaticPi

I'm honestly not sure. I went back and in Chapter 179 it mentions Edgar finishing the last sword, and in 190 Kai gains the enchanting skill on his own, but then in 192 in the House of Enlightenment he gets worried about the woman there getting through Edgar's enchantments that hide his profession, meaning he was still using the earrings. Then 2 chapters later he is whisked away to investigate the ruins and never goes to see Edgar again.

pipMcDohl

The cabin suddenly titled

Aaron Johnson

The amulet won't work for him any more now that he is not red. It was the enchantment style though mostly the obscurement that was special. So he was using the one Edgar made but he is past orange now so that one won't work either. To answer the question I think it was implied he got it back but it is only good as a momento or maybe to study if he hasn't already.

Eric M

You have valid arguments. I like Flynn a lot, I have since shortly after he was introduced and it became apparent he was going to probably be someone Kai encountered often enough to be noteworthy (never imagined he would grow to be Kai's closest friend, but Kai could do a lot worse). My reasoning is for two points, one I like Flynn and don't want to see him betray Kai, and two I don't think Drew would go down that route with this character as it would upset a bunch of people. Even those who hate Flynn and would be screaming "I knew it, kill him now" would be super pissed about Kai getting stabbed in the back again, and would spiral into that whole Kai has no agency, weak go with the flow prattle.

Eric M

Not sure if a fight with pirates is a good or a bad thing for a guy trying to recover from a severe case of PTSD, probably good assuming they aren't all Yellow and Green monsters.

Random Information

Just dive under the waves, hole the pirate ships and teleport back using Hobbes as an anchor. Easy! And nobody will be the wiser.

Random Information

Pirates maybe have a counter to danger-sensing skills - otherwise they would never catch anyone.

Abe 7

Kai is definitely going to say “I told you so” and rub it in captain’s face😆. Hoping to see some awesome action from Kai. Maybe take his frustrations on them or something

Larc

I mean, foreshadowing goes both ways. Flynn has also been loyal, the person he 'backstabbed' was from a cult his mother forced him into since childhood. There's been no hint or precedent of Flynn betraying those he cares about after being extracted from that mess of a situation. Then, look at what happened after the time skips: he leveraged his street smarts to work with Valela regularly, maintained his house and generally led a stable lifestyle, and also visited Kai's family and helped them through grieving their loss regularly enough that he's become somewhat of a fixture. He didn't use the fate fulcrum. He bought two boat tickets every time he visited, just in case. He clearly cares deeply for Kai and I think his background only makes him more loyal to the person who saved his life in more ways than one.

nicolas

The cloaking was fixed at orange one star so he coudn't use it once he stated using Edgar orange 2 star cloaking

PlasmaticPi

I think it might be a favor thing allowing this. It was mentioned danger sensing skills work better if your favor is higher than that of the danger. And since the pirate life is so much more risky than regular sailing it naturally causes Pirates with less favor to die or to accomplish things that give them more favor. Basically the pirate life self selects those with more favor leading to them mainly running into ships with less favor. This then snowballs when those ships have higher leveled but less favored people on it, allowing the Pirates to have a chance to punch above their level via a surprise and favorable attack, which eventually leads to more favor, starting the whole cycle over again. And that's how you get such dangerous Pirates.

Random Information

I think most danger sensing skills are Perception-based. Maybe it is as simple as: If your hide skill is greater than your opponent's danger-sense skill, you 'win'.

saltyApple

That's the thing tho, the more trustworthy he is the more devastating the betrayal and the more interesting the story. Flynn is kais rival, friend and chosen family. I don't think ppl liking Flynn would necessarily stop Drew from toppling that stack of cards if the plot around it is compelling enough. I might be a bit sadistic tho in regards to where I see the story going. edit: The signs i mentioned (I can actually name more but ill be here all day) dont mean much individually but altogether i just get an ominous premonition (that sounds like a sick ability) that Flynn is going to have a crossroads moment. Esp with all the unresolved angst around his family. That could be a confounding factor even if it seems like hes put that behind him currently

Gio

Pirates?! Coincidence? Or did the governor's wife have a hand in it?

da Finnci

Let's just say that the recruitment pitch isn't going away any time soon

nicolas

Almost nobody use favor based skill as their favor is too low. I supose that normal danger skill (at yellow at least) don't predict the future without any input. It more that they inconsciously feel air current or a feint mana signature behind their back and their danger sense implifiy it whereas Kai favor allow him, though hallowed inituition to somewhat predict he future though listening to his favor.

nicolas

No Pirate are bad new for the achipelago economy and security so it's not something the governor wife wants at all. It's to bad a publicity for her. If she wanted Kai capture or dead she had plenty of occasion before he left.

Deathhead

I mean, hobs was a yellow beast, right ? He could just send the cat to kill them, a yellow beast that controls space should be pretty powerful. Also there is Flynn and Kai has way more afinnity for shadow magic and a skill for it, maybe he can just assasinate them. Or given how high his water afinity is now and the fact his skill is higher, maybe he just freezes or sinks their boats :))

Deathhead

I bet with his new skills he can kill them without the others noticing, I mean think about it, he has high shadow and space affinities now and afferent skills and the author wants to show us how much Kai has improved, since the last time he fought pirates he has 7 more skill and only orange and yellow skill and a profession, if the pirates don't have a Green Captain they are so screwed.

Immutably Empty

Yeah what nicolas said plus the fact they were blown off course by the storm, so it should be more random chance

Gopard

Hobbes is no fighter though... He's a movement and stealth specialist not direct fighter @deathbed. @Randominformation Nothing we have ever seen suggests Kai can suddenly teleport himself... He was just barely able to use the dimensional portals a God made for him not nearly at teleportation himself. Same goes for the "just make holes in the boat". He would be very strong in the sea but to-date we have no real clue how hard enchanted wood is and how Kai's direct offensive capabilities stack up against that!

Gopard

But he never learned to use them! Were would Kai have learned space magic? We know you only become good at magic through tons of practice, but before his teachers left he wasn't even able to master the most basic of space magic exercises, because he didnt have the mana to practice. Now with the stronger affinity and more space mana available in Sanctuary he was able to practice much more but it's unlikely in those 2 years where he largely had to focus on pure survival he got space magic to a level even close to "super strong in combat". Dora explained "even if you have a very high space affinity until the later tiers space mages are practically useless" and another thing to remember those pirates are most likely all yellow or half yellow... Kai still has his Profession at red there should still be a huge stat difference between the average pirate and Ski despite everything so even though he could if he revealed everything, likely influence the fight against the rank and file pirates quite a lot he'd be practically useless against the high yellow or even green officers and the captain!

Gopard

Thanks for the chapter!

Deathhead

Idk, he used a portal(it was already there) to instantly kill a yellow beast when he had low affinity, no skill, no profession boon(for space), is it really that hard to believe he could have some short range teleport now ? Same for Hobbs, i know it's not a fighter, but if that cat can make a small space tear and cut the masts of the ships, that's enough. And the holes are more than plausible, a jet with enough water pressure would be enough, or freeze the mechanism for directing the ship (I don't remember the name now) and let it go uncontrollably while they escape.

Deathhead

I get what you are saying, but I made a screenshot of his skills after the Sanctuary, and it shows how his orange Space magic transformed into yellow Space Magic - Advanced(lvl1) which means he at least practiced enough to go through 100 levels in a space skill, even if he cannot do very impressive stuff if he can aim for a person and he tries to teleport an organ, regardless if he succeeds or not the result will be gruesome and bad for the enemy. And he has a boon from the profession called Astral Pathway(lvl7) if that doesn't mean he can teleport at least objects I will be very surprised. Also he has Hobbs, which is a sentient familiar which mundanely uses space skills, so what I'm saying is, he learned it from the cat :) Also, among all magic in all of fantasy i believe there are 4 things that are op as all hell: Space, Time, Regeneration magic and Resurection (that is why Sharingan from Naruto is the most broken thing ever, even though i like it, because it can do all four arguably)

Deathhead

I wouldn't be surprised if the wife also sent them the last time, I mean the Voice of the Ancestors kind of dissapeared after that.

nicolas

Crossing dimention between the archipelago and the sanctuary seem much more complicated than short range teleportation. Even Dora was able do do object short range teleportation with only a minor affinity for space (and probably no didicated skill as it was just "some parlor trick") Kai, in the ocean should be a monster with his water magic, Kahali's blessing and blessed swimmer to refill his reserves. But if he is against mid/high yellow with specialiased combat skills and profession, he will still be overpowered in pure strenght/magic.

nicolas

Pirate won't be green, that's republic governor's level. At most they would be half green as the main captain from the last pirate attack. Even than, I think the half green captain was an outlier as he was prepared to attack a Republic city. So most likly the captain will be High yellow. Kai should be able to bully the orange fighter, kill low yellow with a fight (since he probably fought contless yellow beast in the sancturary) and stand his ground without dying immediatly against the mid and perhaps high yellow. So, I don't think this pirate fight will be easy for Kai, but he should still be able to have a major impact.

Silver Beard

Your sycophants have driven me off Discord... but you'll understand I shit canned your rating. Get them in order or quit offering to anyone new... and just suck up there BS forever.

Silver Beard

I will definitely put this in my review of your story. What something different... man up and start banning folks

SubtleStubble

Do you mean you'll be back July 1st?

Random Information

OK - if you didn't like my previous easy victory, this is even easier:- 1) Turn into a giant invisible frog. 2) Hop onto the pirate ship. 3) Swallow the pirate captain. 4) Hop back onto the original ship. 5) Turn back into Kai. There can't be any nitpicking with this technique, it is 100% guaranteed, and no-one the wiser.

wanderer117

Anyone else seeing this as a new chapter today on their feed?

nicolas

I have a better solution and it only takes one step ;) - Pray to Zervathi so that he erase the pirates. He already answered the 3 bargained request but maybe there is room for a fourth ? Kai must have grown on him over the years, no ?

Simeon Dobromirov

omg, ok, that's it your book was going downhill since awhile ago, its not worth to pay anymore, pity it was a good book

신현준

Gracias

Simeon Dobromirov

The last book is just a disappointment, I wanted to read about kai's adventures, where he is by himself and couldn't rely on other ppl, there is also too much of flyn and now he is even coming to the continent with him, he also just yapped about living a diff life before that and flyn is like ya that makes total sense... It's just not enjoying for me anymore

nicolas

Well I don't know what you thought about the begening of this story, but for me it was never a solo grind I'm OP kind of story, and more a I live in a complexe society where connections and skills are both required in order to improve and explore this worlds secrets. Before the sanctuary Kai has never been alone and has always relied on other to learn skills and make money. Conserning Flynn's reaction : Considering that it is a magic world with a system and reincarnation while extremely rare, is still a know phenomenon (at least by Virya and Dora), I don't find his reaction that strange. Kai is a genius that started with nothing but is leagues headed of everyone on the archipelago now, so Flynn must just be glad to finaly know how.

Ahmed Hashi

So what I have gleaned from this, correct me if I'm wrong, is that the two main things you dislike about the stories current direction is the Time Skip and Flynn. I can understand just really HATING a side character and there really is no help for that. Flynn seems to be hit or miss in terms of likeability. There is no cure for that. You also wanted to see Kai explore the hidden sanctuary. We will see that in bits and peices so while it's not exactly what you wanted it is still present. Your misgivings are pretty understandable and I understand where you are coming from, but as someone who enjoys this story too (Also not the biggest fan of Flynn) the story's quality of writing hasn't changed and I think the Mainland will be Intresting to see Kai experience. I think that even though this story has failed to meet your expectations in some regards it still has plenty to offer

Random Information

Who thinks that the pirate ship will be crewed by the Voice of the Ancestors? It make sense (story-wise) to me. Doubling down, maybe Flynn's mother and sister are on board? That would be a big twist.

nicolas

I don't see why that would be the case. Voice of the Ancestors are fighting to take back the archipelago. What would they be doing half way accross the see ? They are not pirates, they are rebels that resist the occupation of their territory. Furthermore the pirate attack shoudn't have been planned as the ship got lost due to the storm, so even something like : "the Voice of the Ancestors wants to scare of tourist" would not be a valid argument.

The Voice of the Ancestors paid pirates before to ransack Sylspring, so they already had connections. Piracy might gain them some money, and strike back at the tourists invading the Archipelago. It seems a logical step from paying pirates to becoming pirates themselves.

nicolas

Piracy is not aligned with their main goal of freeing the archipelago. At most they could target touriste ships to scare touristes and deprive the governor some money, but it would not be very effective : Kai ship was put of course by the storm, so that would mean the Voice is just randomly pirating, away from the main touriste ships roads. + The voice are people from the archipelago, so their races and professions are on average not as advanced as other pirates / enforcers of the republic. I suspect that if the Voice deceided to do piracy, they would be wiped out pretty quickly by some enforcer or a rival pirate crew.

Keid

I mean, I doubt it's them since at this point they're much farther out, but piracy is pretty well-aligned with that struggle. For one, they need funds to operate and taking from the Republic would have a strong appeal, but also discouraging any sort of commerce or population exchange also further their goals. They don't want the islands to be an interesting center for trade or tourism for the Republic. They could probably do pretty well on the Shallow Sea by virtue of knowing smaller islands and coves, being able to find sympathetic locals to fence foods, and possibly being able to take refuge on the island reserved for the Spirits.

nicolas

Yeah, I agree with your points but as I just said in my previous message, Kai ship is not on the proper touriste road anymore so the Voice would not be very efficent in reducing toursime if they only attacked boat who got lost in the see. + the Voice are quite weak compared to the average pirate and enforcer so they would probably get wipped out; That's why until know they have gone unto hiding and only strike in empridictable manner, never two times in the same place.
