Mutant rights is an allegory for gay rights, according to the og source material. Misplaced fear, judging by supposed acts of few, etc.

Close but no cigar. It's for Civil Rights which was the main point. People try to boil it down to gay rights but that is one piece of the entire civil rights movement. The main writers of Marvel were Jewish and saw some pretty gnarly things. They were also friends with Black Panthers and other civil rights activist groups in college or just socially. The X-Men were supposed to reflect those notions of acceptance. They're meant to include all of these ideas and not something so narrow as gay rights which was larger in the 80's and not the early 60's when X-Men was written.
