Hey folks!  Although in [this post] I mentioned I would be taking a break this month from working on game content, I had a breakthrough in what I had been working on, and in the past week I went from being unable to get most of my planned systems working to having remade the entire Eastwood intro in the new engine I'm using.

About 2,000 lines of code so far (some pasted together screenshots are attached to this post), most of which went into writing the dialog parser, but I now have working basically every system I was using in renpy, but now that I'm working in godot, I have the ability to incorporate more functionality and make many different types of games than was previously available to me.

So, that said, I will be restructuring the project somewhat to accommodate the features I wanted but was previously unable to implement, one of the main ones being overworld exploration.  So now, instead of only being able to click from scene to scene, the player character will be able to walk around from place to place in a top down or isometric overworld (I've tested both and both work just fine, I haven't decided which I prefer yet).

Since last August, I've been trying out and building prototypes in different game engines to use for the reboot of Eldet and this one has been my favorite by far.  Both eastwood and eldet will have their development continued in this engine, and both will incorporate player controlled overworld exploration in addition to the conventional visual novel character dialog/narrative scenes.

Future information about game dev progress will be just be talked about in the patreon discord as I've been doing previously, but since this was a pretty big milestone I decided to talk about it here as well.  No ETA on the releases for anything, I've been doing a lot of work but there's still more work to be done.

The rest of my time this month will just be spent on drawing the regular patreon rewards, I hope you all have a happy (and safe!) pride month.   Thank you, as always, for your support <3

Thanks for the update. I really enjoyed the demos you released for both of them, and can't wait for the release sometimes in the far future.

This is an awesome breakthrough Marccus! Thanks for sharing this news on Patreon. I think with top-down vs isometric, it depends on what aesthetic you want. I find that top-down is much more retro as it's reminiscent of old Pokémon games etc, whereas isometric is more timeless and somewhat still popular today. I think either would suit Hello Eastwood's pixel graphics, but not sure about Eldet – my first guess is that isometric might blend better with Eldet's existing visuals, but I may be wrong. I'm sure a little experimenting will help you decide, and I know whatever you choose will look great! Happy Pride Month! 🌈
