Happy happy happpppyyyyyyy Sunday

Thank you for the new reaction! I always look forward to these~ I do have to say though, 2PM was and is still a lot bigger and well known than you probably realize. It's not entirely fair to say that Stray Kids brings in more/is more respected than 2PM. 2PM are an absolutely HUGE 2nd gen idol group, they were what Stray Kids is now several years ago. They are an amazing group in itself and worth checking out if you ever have the time. They just debuted 10 years before Stray Kids and were part of a different generation.

Thank you for your enthusiastic reaction! I am glad you didn’t cut the episode in half and watched the whole thing 🥹 I hope you’ll continue to do soooo!

Kingdom really awakened the thirst for Seonghwa corset styling

Megan Wall

For this one I would say I would have ranked it Ateez, ikon, The Boyz, btob, stray kids, sf9. I love all the groups so I’m not biased like other people so I can look at it like who actually did the best to me. Now obviously my style of liking something will be different to others. I did love all the performances actually. One of rankings that was actually difficult at first but became easy when I refreshed myself on the previous episodes performances. I feel bad for sf9 because they did have an amazing performance as I said I loved them all, but I just think the others were stronger.

Danie

Yes for me it was amazing what Ateez did. Also considering they had a comeback during that time. I absolutely love this stage. The whole concept fit so well together. The stage presence and everything. Even though they came after Stray Kids I really think they are different. (Side info: they are currently touring with Wonderland Symphony No 9 in the setlist - they dont do this all the time - and Seonghwa is using a sword instead of a gun. Looks so cool. He even did it for KCon yesterday - And the sidecut was amazing. He had it for a while)

Viviena

JYP still holds way too much power over skz to my liking... Also you must remember that this is the exact moment when Hyunjin controversy happened and for the rest of the show the company engages in HEAVY damage control, hence the members praising it every other minute. It would be painfully obvious when they will divide on subunits and rap subunit will work in JYP building and I kid you not they will recite a blandest ever praise to JYP cafeteria. Chan be like: "did you know that this cafeteria only serves organic food, you would think it doesn't taste good but it does". Like Channie, blink twice if you need help.

Mountiny

"From the Wonderland" actually went on to win awards for best performance of the year. It wasn't just iconic as part of Kingdom but actually was highly praised outside of Kingdom as well which is exactly what Hongjoong was hoping for when he said "there will be ATEEZ before Kingdom, and ATEEZ after Kingdom." For them it was never just a competition, it was always about solidifying their identity as a group and establishing their presence in the minds of both the public and industry professionals. That's why there's so much of their lore woven into each performance, they kinda used the show as a sort of playground. He knew that Kingdom was going to mark a turning point for the group and it most definitely did.

Sara

I agree and I'd also like to add that Twice is insanely popular and have achieved so much. A lot of people who don't know kpop can recognize Twice's name cause they are one of the biggest kpop girl groups in general. Though skz for sure is one of the main money makers for JYPE. But all these groups are from different generations, Twice being 2nd gen.

Mountiny

Also, I don't know if anyone has commented on this yet but there was actually a lot of controversy around Kingdom, specifically regarding the treatment some groups got compared to others. ATEEZ was one of the groups that was often kept out of the loop of a lot of things (I believe BTOB too and some other group? But I'm not sure which one). If you pay attention to their break rooms for instance, you can clearly see that while everyone else has couches, furniture and food, ATZ's break room was an empty box with chairs. That's just one exemple of the small acts of favoritism that were going on throughout the show and that were heavily criticized after the fact, but there were so many other things happening too. Spoiler alert but the last song ATZ performed on Kingdom is the real....the message of that song makes it obvious why they'd pick it ("This is what we call style"). It's also why HJ has a fan with the words "Justice will prevail" written on it that he often brings out when they perform The Real at certain events, mostly the ones on Korean TV. MNet did them dirty and ATZ isn't about to let that go quietly.

Danie

Yes you can see the difference and is hurtful to see that. And there may have been other things. I think I saw one show where Hongjoong showed that fan with that message written on it.

Danie

Yes they used it for a lot of things. When you know the next releases you realize it. They used it really well.

Rimi

I think its unfair to say that only Stray kids is the money maker Because Twice has huge popularity within Korea and internationally as well. They are on of the biggest girl groups. They have performed on American shows more then stray kids. ITZY is a very popular group as well not at same level as Stray kids but its a little unfair to other groups who have come before Stray kids or at the same time because they are working just as hard and are very successful. Twice has a very loyal and huge fanbase as well.

I want to watch this but as an atiny just when watching from the sidelines hurts way too much. ateez didn't sleep for days, barely ate, severely overworked by doing this competition and comeback in between while also being heavily mistreated by mnet and by the straykids fandom.. san with extreme fatigue, yeosang having to pinch himself just to stay awake that even hongjoong and jongho said they don't want to remember anything about this time,, I respect them so much but I still can't get past episode 2

Loxy_

I don't think he meant it like that, and seeing as he hasn't checked out twice or ITZY he probably couldn't gage their popularity. Also, Skz is a huge money maker for JYP so even though there are others within the company who are popular, it is fair to say they are a main money maker.

thanks for the extra reaction! Ateez performance this round was just out of this world. just a note: No, sf9 were not on road to kingdom - The boyz is the only group here from road to kingdom, it was a competition between less known groups to fight for a chance to enter kingdom (honestly I enjoyed it a lot). I think the mc just meant like, technically they're on the road to kingdom still to figure out who the "king" is, but I get why it confused you lol.

Laura L.

There were so many controversies going on in Kingdom, knowing about them puts some of their performances in a different light tbh. I know some groups were told a different budget than others, hence why they had less props or sets. Then there were problems with the “secret judges”, which many suspected were scrounged up from whomever would take them. Not to diss them or their experience, but some of the judges were juniors who hadn’t been debuted for even a year yet. Mnet has the habit of selecting favorites and editing to make some groups seem less than others. “Evil editing” is pretty common too, or they focus on the wrong parts of the group’s concepts or rehearsals for drama. Also, after watching this with you, I actually have a stronger impression if SF9, though I do like some of their music. I hope you’ll check out all these groups later, and also watch Road to Kingdom, because they have some amazing stages there as well.

Stray kids actually struggled a bit too, because Chan had to run a certain distance, I'm excited for you to check out their extra behind the scenes, u get to see more in depth of the effort and obstacles they had during the performances

Viviena

It was instrumental to their popularity exploding so much, so really it was worth everything and more. I feel like atiny who went though the show and all the fanwars real time really overexaggerate the problems here. Mnet gave them terrible rooms, that's very true. Also gave little to no screen time to Yeosang but it's true for every group as well having members not highlighted. But it's not anyone's fault that there were scheduling issues with comeback or drama.

Anonymous

Because I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere yet - yes, the guy with the red hair in that one shot was Jongho. Not only did Ateez have a comeback at the same time as filming Kingdom, but SF9's Chani and Hwi, along with Ateez's Yunho, Jongho, San, and Seonghwa were all filming for a K-drama called 'Imitation' at this time as well

Bella H

Re: the Hangul (unable to read Korean) you can literally learn it in a day. And as the group names are usually phonetic you will know who is who.

Bella H

Also use Papago to translate images. Hands down, totally craps over Google.

Nat

yeeeees *dancing emoji* thank you for your reaction! I love Side Effects, and this mashup is superb! I do think the ranking is very deserved tho, they all did really well and I probably would have been troubled if I'd had to choose

ailea gomez

You do realize even Mnet themselves had to put out a Statement ??? Idc about their time screen I cared about their physical and mental well-being. They said they used to just hug each other and cry.. be so fr rn

Not to lower how great SKZ is, cause I love them so much, but its a true that now they are a big powerhouse at JYP. However from the survival show until Gods Menu, they were just another group, and groups like Twice and 2PM were the heads of the company. I believe Day6 is older as well and has been doing well money wise. I think that now, with the way KPop fandoms have grown, the numbers start to grow too. More people now know about kpop (thanks to BTS) and are willing to listen to it, but before 2013, people just thought kpop was Gangnam Style. SKZ is breaking records and making waves for JYP, but JYP became one of the Big 4 (originally Big 3) because of groups like 2PM, Got7, Twice, etc. I'm an old head and have been listening to different groups since 2009, so it is very wild seeing how far SKZ has come from then

Olivia

Kingdom is so fun to rewatch!

Ivona

When they said "at our company they respect our opinion the most" they didn't mean compared to other artists but in comparison to ideas of the creative team, not because they are big (because they weren't the biggest money-maker at that time, maybe not even in top 3) but because they have great ideas. They wanted to show their ideas are considered and of course our boys have great ideas so they get accepted. The picture with the other groups was there to show they are managed by Division 1 just like 2PM, while the other groups are under other divisions of JYP, which might work completely differently.

Ivona

SKZ actually had a really slow rise in their career compared to other JYP artists before them (who basically got really popular from their debut and rose even more from there), During 4th gen the competition was so large with so many groups debuting. Also SKZ were and still are more popular globally than domestically, so Kingdom having a global vote really helped them. They don't really go on TV variety shows much, don't do acting and most of their shows are on their own Youtube channel so they don't get on people's radar that much unless they search for them themselves unlike older groups (for example BtoB are famous for their vocals but they are hilarious on variety shows and appear on TV all the time, so most Koreans of different ages know them). SKZ solely focus on their music, which is great but people can only see them on music shows and don't get attached to the members (both skz and ateez still have this problem, while the boyz often get invited on shows and are pretty popular in Korea, some even individually). When they were announced for Kingdom people outside the fandom didn't expect much from them or didn't know them, which is why they were so surprised by their Victory Song MAMA performance in 2020 (skz, the boyz and ateez were invited to perform and give a little teaser for Kingdom and introduce themselves to the general audience more). In 2020 they were able to get a bit of a break with God's Menu (still can't believe they didn't get any wins with it...) and Backdoor but weren't one of the big groups. They were on the rise. I think them, ateez and the boyz were not that different popularity-wise in Korea (and not more popular than the older groups) with The Boyz having the advantage of Road to Kingdom, while globally Ateez and Stray Kids had the most popularity (even more than the older groups). Kingdom was actually what gave SKZ a huge kick-start, their album sales almost tripled and they became the first 4th gen million seller and then rose more exponentially and became huge. Their popularity in Korea is finally getting a bit better this year but it's slow and it's really frustrating when we don't win music shows or important awards because of Korean charts...

Ellie

Very true. I think at one point Itzy was even a bigger force than skz and they debuted after them. Not trying to downplay skz either.

In SF9's defense, they wanted to be a music group from the beginning. They went through a survival show to debut and they've worked hard to get to where they are now. The thing is though, their company FNC is known for being terrible at artist management and SF9 was actually the first boygroup to come out of FNC since their company mainly focused on bands. SF9 was really treated so poorly by their company and barely given any opportunities as a group. For the members to stay afloat and to bring money into the company they had to take on different jobs such as acting. Of course they also love acting and musical acting and all that but they didn't necessarily want to put the group to the side for it, that decision mainly came from FNC. Also, SF9 members are involved in music production. Youngbin and Zuho specifically I know produce and write music, Taeyang plays the guitar, and Inseong is a musical actor. They may seem to focus a lot on performance but that is the nature of this show. Outside of this show they are true musicians and have a love for music. The members are also quite close with each other and have been through a lot together. This show only shows you a portion of what these groups actually are so don't form a solid opinion too quickly based on what MNet has edited for you to see. Of course everyone has different taste so it's understandable if you don't vibe with a performance. I'm glad you enjoyed this one though!
