Most icons I make, I make them square. A jailbroken device applies a mask to icons and gives users the option to apply their own masks. If you want to use those icons on a non jailbroken phone then you need the image itself masked.

I've used this XnView for awhile now but only for it's batch options. I'm sure it can do more but the only thing i've used it for. 

What you need

The mask image is simply an image the same size of the icons. It has a white shape defining the mask. If you wanted rounded edges just make an image with a white rounded square. I'll upload an example mask below.

Open XnView, go to tools, batch convert. The first tab on this window is where you select the images you want masked. Second tab is where you create your action. Click add action > image > mask select the mask in the url, set opacity to 100, stretch mask, color to black, and use mask as alpha. You should see the icon masked in the preview.

You can also apply overlays. Instead of choosing mask, you can choose watermark and this will display an image on an image (overlay over icon)
