Tutorial Stream 1 (basic poses) (Patreon)

OKAY
So for posing for me
I usually stop for a moment and THINK
I think about what I want to draw, what I want the limbs to be doing, the angle
You'll always see me pause right at the starts
So give me a type of pose?
latt19:07
standing?
Kaciart19:08
okay!
Merwild19:08
someone sat on a stool?
Kaciart19:08
So first
I do the line of action - Usually the spine. Kind of a central line
If its from the front it will be down the neck to navel
then i give it a head
i usually do the eyeline and ear in the cross hair
These two lines are almost always parallel
i draw each segment in shapes
Keep the lines light so you can correct without erasing
i like to keep the lines loose and curving, the body is organic so there wont be many very straight lines
Pumpkintiger19:14
sorry, is it allowed to ask questions? if so, i'd like to know if you took any live-drawing sessions with models or did something like that?
Kaciart19:14
absolutely!!
yes
I studied animation
And figure studies was a huge part of that
Pumpkintiger19:14
ooooh awesome! Thank you!
Kaciart19:15
I realised very quickly animation wasnt for me
XD
So here it is in shapes
beannsss
Noct would not be pleased
kitarin19:17
beans are good for you, Noct
Kaciart19:18
Okay so
Any questions so far about this??
we'll add more limbs in a sec
latt19:19
so these are the shapes you see when you're building up the pose?
Kaciart19:19
yupp
I almost ALWAYS work in circular shapes
One of the things i like to do with my art is
When im about to draw a limb or the head
I think 'can it go a different way'
The first thought you have is the first thought almost everyone will have had
So throw it away and go with the second
The same stands for ideas with stories
Pumpkintiger19:22
you mean the pose of the limb?
Kaciart19:22
yup
Like in the sitting pose
Where would you put the hands?
Pumpkintiger19:22
I'd put them over the ears XD
Kaciart19:22
Is that your second thought?
kitarin19:22
In the lap was my first thought
Pumpkintiger19:22
but when I imagine him sitting on a table, then in front of him
Kaciart19:23
Yeah Kit that's my first thought too
Well pumpkin you have a very non linear thought process which is great
Pumpkintiger19:23
I'm probably just too much drama
Kaciart19:23
XD
So if we're not putting them in his lap
he could be biting his nails
scratching...something
And it already makes the pose a little more interesting
Pumpkintiger19:26
I'll be looking forward to sit back a moment and think about the posing next time. Most of the time i'm panicking and just do whatever with it
Kaciart19:26
We'll keep the standing simple enough for explanations sake
it always helps to just stop and think, doesnt matter how long
i have an image saved on my phone for about 2 weeks to use
I did that pic of Ignis in grey scale and Asidian suggested i do a series of each
So i was googling 'interesting lighting'
So like, wait until youre ready to do a pose too
But i found this pic, i'll show you
this is the image
But I was thinking Noctis
but where his father stabbed him
>__>
PastelCyanide19:30
rude lol
latt19:30
so you come up with the pose, the scene? then lighting, general environment, color?
Kaciart19:31
Any single factor could prompt a pic
Its like when i ask for a word in streams
It jolts my mind
But so does looking at pictures and reading prompts
Pumpkintiger19:32
but while you're streaming your posing comes from your mind, right? pictures are just for ideas?
Kaciart19:32
Yes, but like that its usually based one something you guys have said
I started with refs too though
I've been doing this so long that its like, your mind has a library anyway
Merwild19:34
It's still very obscure to me lol The inspiration part.
Kaciart19:34
theres nights when XD its like i havent a single independent thought
so i need people to be like 'draw this, draw that'
I'll ask for characters if im feeling creative
Words if im blank or want to not have to work my brain
XD Scenarios if im feeling masochistic
Goodbye sleep
PastelCyanide19:37
I'm unfortunately all inspiration and little skill
Kaciart19:37
I think the fact that youre here Pastel, says a lot about your motivation to improve tho
PastelCyanide19:38
; /// ; Oh stop
Kaciart19:38
And honestly determination and practice are a huge part in improving
You have to WANT to improve
A friend of mine was at a convention
He was sitting next to this professional artist and this dude came up
And he says 'I wish i was as good as you *sigh*'
And the artist was like 'No you don't'
'What?'
'If you did you'd be at home working on it'
Kaciart19:42
The wrist comes to the groin
Do not be afraid to use the transform too to move things around
It is not cheating
Merwild19:42
Practice is super important, it reveals your abilities
Kaciart19:42
it is using the tools youre given
latt19:43
it was only recently i started using the lasso/magnetic lasso tool and it's a game changer
Kuromegane19:43
practice makes progress
Kaciart19:43
you often see people go 'lol cheating'
You do NOT have to start drawing from scratch
The limb behind - if you want you can grab a second colour and draw through the image.
Okay so
We have our basics
Now for me i'd go straight into line art
but
tonight we're going to do another sketch layer
Ftr
I always find it easier to draw small so this is where you'd enlarge the canvas
if you were going into the lines
So im going to use a layer clip and colour the line art to make it easier to separate from the next sketch
and merge it down
I always use shortcuts
ctrl+e is merge
so you now see where the crosshair was for
this is where you can fix some of your proportions too
these lines are also parallel
when your fingers are resting they always curl slightly
So now you have your manequin
this second sketch can be as messy as you like
You can do a third sketch to clean
And this is where you can add clothes too
also i know you drew that eye
and you love that eye
But XD dont be afraid to cover it
Pumpkintiger20:00
one thing which is impressive on your art is that you don't get lost in details. your stuff is so clean and has the exact right amount of details. I really want to be able to get to that as well
Kaciart20:00
it will probably add more
Here we have the gist of the pose
so now we're lining
this is where you can detail to your hearts content
XD
Merwild20:07
feels like you have a good tablet, very precise.
Kaciart20:07
yess i have a cintiq
its a monstrosity
I love it
Merwild20:08
I tried one and I couldn't. I have to recalibrate every time I moved in from of it, which is every 5 minutes
had*
Kaciart20:09
yeah that took a bit of getting used to
when i draw ears
i have a pattern i ALWAYS use
and change it up a little
Merwild20:14
I really don't know what I will take. I have a small wacom but it doesn't feel right anymore
Kaciart20:14
Wacom also isnt the be all and end all anymore
theres a website that reviews artbooks and products
tip you probably know
but if you hold any short cut, do your thing with it while its held down
when you release it goes back to your previous tools
noct has 2 gifferent boots
because hes a little shit
but i never draw them accurately
because as stated
little shit
Those game designers need a slap
'The artists are going to realise this WAY too late 8DD
*steeples fingers*
A year later
WTFF
another handy shortcut is
alt and spacebar rotates freely
Kuromegane20:30
and just like that, the sitting and standing mannaquins have feelings
Kaciart20:31
XD
but yes
SO
questions?
Kuromegane20:33
im sure ill have questions at like.. 2 in the morning
Kaciart20:33
well send them to me!
And i'll answer them and add them to the post
Okay do we want to try a more intricate pose using the same ideas or 2 characters
or will we call it at that
PastelCyanide20:40
Everybody should be able to express themselves in an artistic manner even if its just doodling or coloring in a coloring book ;///;
Kaciart20:40
Its so therapeutic
Kuromegane20:41
i know watching your streams are
Kaciart20:41
Like you say, theres a reason why adult colouring books have SHOT up in popularity
Kuromegane20:41
like watching bob ross with ffxv characters XD
Kaciart20:41
loooll
only no happy trees
only sad promptos
Kuromegane20:41
instead of happy little trees we get painful prompto
HA
Kaciart20:44
was there any aspect that you want revisited?
Kuromegane20:45
front facing structure maybe?
Kaciart20:46
okay so
what kind of pose?
Kuromegane20:46
plain ol standing
Kaciart20:46
okay
latt20:46
something with a tricky perspective?
Kaciart20:47
so our line of action
And for perspective you need your perspective lines to start
so we're back to our shapes
beans
i usually draw circles around joints
and now perspective
Im just going to see how this works
when you open the transform
Ctrl +t
holding shift keeps the proportion
but holding ctrl lets you skew the proportions
and drag individual points
so heres a little guide for our perspective.
I've taken the standing pose and using the transform and skewing i've given it a sort of perspective.
It isn't right tho as this is more like if a book cover was in perspective rather than a person so
now we make it overlap more
Merwild20:57
always remember to think in 3D XD
Kaciart21:03
Hows that latt
If you think that the countour of the body will help
latt21:03
freaking great; it's about knowing how the beans overlap?
Kaciart21:06
okayyy
sketch the second
we're seeing the bottom of everything in this one
the outer ankle is lower than the inner
But also
Save reference pics of these angles
especially for the face
take down and upshot selfies
So
I thinkkk
I'll stop there for now tonight
Tomorrow we'll have another and i'll give a headsup on the time
