I spent about a year caring for a 9 year old in a previous relationship and I was consistently shocked to find the ways she was behind in her education. But after a few report cards it became clear that she was completely average in her class. None of these kids can read or write or do simple arithmetic. I'm not a fucking genius or anything but I had a grasp on reading and writing and simple addition and subtraction before entering grade school and I always expected that was the norm but the reality is these kids are nearly 100% illiterate even at like middle school age
