I guess all the screaming and visions Gwen was seeing was to brainwash her. I do like how nice Morgana was being as a change in her tactics but you are right there were other methods we’ve seen before. I haven’t rewatched season 5 so I’m not really sure how different this is meant to be. And omg the way they killed Elyan was TRASH! He was one of the underdeveloped knights and they just randomly kill him. The execution was not good at all for me.The worst death on this show by far. This was a weird one

One of the main rules in Merlin: if a usual secondary character gets more focus in an episode, that probably means they will die... Sadly, this is what happened with Elyan... RIP Elyan, you deserved so much better... Your confused face at the end reminded me of my initial reaction to the end of the episode. I had no clue what was going on and the episode just left me confused even after the promo. Now, after having re-watched it a few times and read some reviews about the episode, I understand it better. My understanding of it, is that Morgana did some kind of ritual with the mandrakes. We don't actually know how long Gwen was in that dark room with the mandrakes root. We don't actually know how many visions she saw of Merlin, Arthur, Elyan and probably the other knights, Gaius and anyone she trusts in Camelot, taunting her and mentally torturing her. For me, that's the part of the episode that is not well explained and the average viewer will probably not get it fully. Only the hardcore fans who analyze episodes, will truly understand what was Morgana's goal with this. We know, from the season 3 premiere, that mandrake roots are used to mentally torture someone (like Morgause and Morgana did with Uther) but here it seems to be used as brainwashing. Morgana is acting all kind and sweet with Gwen because she wants Gwen to believe that Morgana is the only one left that cares about her and that she can trust. What's confusing, is that Gwen seems to still be resisting the brainwashing just in the last scene with Morgana before we see her behind the enchanted sword. So it is confusing that Morgana's plan seems to have worked by the end of the episode. The most popular theory after the episode aired, was that Gwen needed to go trough some traumatic loss to complete the ritual. And after losing Elyan, I think that's when she was completely overwhelmed and couldn't resist Morgana's magic any longer. I don't think that Morgana ever intended to kill Arthur in this episode. I think she probably knew it'd be Elyan. We can't forget that Morgana is a seer and she probably saw it all unfold before it even happened. Her main goal was to get Gwen and she succeeded in that. Arthur, Merlin and the knights think they have won bringing Gwen home but Morgana's plan is only just beginning as we see at the end of the episode. The pacing in this episode is a bit off for me. And as I wrote above, I feel like it's not well explained and it's up to the viewer to interpret what's going on. One thing that's great though is the acting. Angel is really good in this episode and it must have been hard to act so terrified and on the verge of breaking down for so many scenes. I also love how Katie is acting so manipulative and sweet at the same time, it works really well in her scenes with Angel. I had missed them acting in scenes together and they were brillant in this episode. When Morgana mentioned being shackled in the darkness for two years, that was already alluded to in the nightmare she had in 5x02, in which we saw her and Aithusa at the bottom of a pit. So nope, you did not miss an episode, we got some references earlier in the season so it's normal that you did not make the connection. In her own twisted way, I believe that Morgana longs for the friendship she used to have with Gwen. And some part of me wants to believe that she did not just act like she cared about her but that she genuinely does (again, in a very wrong and twisted way). Even Gwen seemed shocked when Morgana told her about her own emprisonment. I just really loved their friendship in the earlier seasons and it's so sad and heartbreaking seeing them now... Although the episode is quite dark, I love the lighter scenes in it too. Especially Gwen with the knights at the beginning. It's such a sweet and wholesome scene. And Gwaine being in love with himself is just 100% true XD I love how they tease Elyan too. Such a sweet moment before all hell breaks loose... I also really like every little moments Arthur has during the episode when the knights and Merlin keep reminding him he's not alone in this quest and how they all care about Gwen and will bring her home. Merlin's promise and how he just keeps mentioning it, I love these two so much <3 Walking through that forrest with capes must have been a nightmare for the cast. I bet Colin was glad he had his trademark outfit and didn't have to deal with soaking wet cloaks and chainmail... As you mentioned it several times while watching this episode, things would go so much better if everyone knew Merlin has magic.... It's just really frustrating now and I remember how annoyed I was when season 5 aired and we were halfway through already and still no magic reveal... At least we got to see some new spell that is basically magical satnav XD, well done Merlin! Next episode, we'll get to see more of the consequences of what has been done to Gwen by Morgana. There's a cool gest star too that I'm sure you will recognize right away. I'm curious to see your reaction to the episode and how Gwen is in it. I wish you sweet dreams of cheese that taste of applepie ;) And until next week :)
