This is for me the most frustrating Merlin episode to watch (or re-watch). The other one that gets nearly as frustrating is the one I think you mentioned, from season 2, when Arthur learnt the truth about his birth and how Uther only waged war on magic because it caused his wife to die after he asked Nimueh to use magic so that Igraine could give him a son. Granted that season 2 would have been way too early for Arthur to become king, it was really frustrating to see Merlin lie to Arthur at the end of that episode and tell him Morgause had been lying and that Arthur had not seen his mother.... This episode, is even more frustrating. I remember being quite mad after that episode aired because there had been the perfect opportunity to do the magic reveal. The scene in itself is really the perfect set up, Merlin is alone with Arthur and the latter also starts expressing doubts about magic being evil. Of all the moments we've had between these two, this could have been the moment for Merlin to finally reveal the truth to Arthur. And to be honnest, we all truly believed it would happen while we were watching the episode for the first time. We get that scene just before in which Merlin described how the place feels so alive around him and then asks Arthur if he feels it too, to which he said no. I mean, I know Arthur is quite oblivious but why didn't he even question that knowing they were staying in a place known to be filled with magic? So yeah, the next conversation, should have totally led to the magic reveal. But it doesn't.... Colin's acting in that scene is just so heartbreaking and I feel so sad for Merlin and angry at the same time. But I also don't understand Arthur either, earlier he showed that he notices when Merlin's being troubled by something (there were a few scenes in this season already) and yet, here he doesn't even question how much Merlin seems to struggle and how he's nearly in tears while trying to answer Arthur. So yeah, all around, very frustrating to watch (and re-watch).... I agree with what you said about Merlin just focusing on one parts of what he's being told when it comes to Mordred. I really love Merlin, and he's my favorite character on the show but sometimes I wish he'd stop obsessing over prophecies... There's also quite a meaningful parallel with Morgana when he replies to Gaius "He grew up", just what Morgana said to Arthur in 5x02 "she grew up". To be fair, Merlin has been through a lot and has lost people he cared about through the years. And he's been shown this vision of Arthur falling at Mordred's hand and when he insists to Gaius saying he can't ignore what he saw, we can't help but feel for him. This vision must have haunted his nightmares ever since he saw it. Worse, the man visually fated to kill Arthur lives in Camelot and is quite near to the King now. We've seen it many times before, when it comes to Arthur, Merlin ignores everything else, he does everything to protect him. This is his weakness and here again, he puts Arthur above everything, even the possibility of finally being able to live as himself freely and without the fear of being executed for who he is. I don't really agree with what you said about the dragon. Yes, he does tell Merlin about it being sevral paths, and yes, he does say sometimes the ivy must be cut. But in the past, the dragon has all but told Merlin that Mordred needed to die. He's basically been putting this idea in Merlin's head ever since Merlin met Mordred. I still believe that the dragon knows much more than he lets on and he's quite manipulative with Merlin. If the dragon had never told Merlin about Mordred in season 1, Merlin wouldn't have started to doubt and then mistrust him. And earlier this season, when Merlin told the dragon about the vision, the dragon did once again reiterate that Mordred was destined to kill Arthur. Why didn't he mention several paths before this episode ? Maybe because he wants Merlin to chose one particular path, and he leads him to this path with what he choses to tell him. I really appreciate how Gaius is trying to reason with Merlin and make him see that he should not put so much faith into a prophecies. But I also love how he reasons with Arthur about the Disir and make him see that he must take this seriously. Gaius just gives good pieces of advice this episode. And even at the end, when Merlin blames himself, Gaius supports him. Even though, this episode is frustrating, there are still many things I love about it. One of them is the court of the Disir. I don't know if that was part of the Arthurian legend or some other myth, but I find this idea really cool and so fitting with the world of the show. I love when we get new pieces of lore in the show just like the Isle of the blessed and the high priestesses. Also, the whole set inside the cave looks eerie and really otherwordly. I also love how every line is spoken by all three of the disciples with this echoy effect. I just thinks the scenes with the court of the Disr are really cool. Especially when they get angry about the knights disrespecting the sacred place. Another thing I love in this episode: Mordred. He's really good in this episode and my favorite scene has to be the one when he talks to Merlin near Osgar's grave. Mordred has really beautiful and meaningful lines and even Merlin is moved by his words (for a short while). I also love how the knights are being total jerks to him and he's just so innocent and believes them about the rituals of a first patrol XD It's just like big brothers teasing their youngest sibbling, and Merlin and Arthur are just the dads who let it happen XD. Gwen has a few adorable moments in this episode too. I love the one when she asks Merlin to look after Arthur and he says "he doesn't always make it easy" and she just replies "I know". I love their friendship so much and I totally agree with you, she should know about Merlin's magic, it would be so perfect if she did. Two cute Merthur scenes: "I haven't seen you smile these past three days" Like I wrote at the beginning of this comment, Arthur pays attention to how Merlin is feeling and he notices when something's wrong. He's counting the days he hasn't seen his Merlin smile, it's just really adorable <3 And the second scene, the teasing after the patrol. Arthur just teasing Merlin so casually in front of Mordred is just so adorable too. They have other really good scenes, but these two are my favorite. This episode also has some great outtakes with Colin and Bradley, and Eoin. I have a hard time not to think of the outtabkes when watching certain sceneXD. I really hope you'll react to the outtakes so I won't write more about them in this comment in case you do. I really enjoyed your reaction, you totally picked up on Merlin's jealousy at the beginning with Mordred and Arthur just like I expected. Next week Morgana returns. I'm looking forward to your next reaction.
