It was nice to see Uther again but as a villain rather than the King. In previous seasons he was more fleshed out but here he’s an outsider. I also don’t think he would’ve attempted to kill Arthur that was a bit out of character. And omg that promo was SO dramatic. I don’t think I’ve watched it even when I was watching Merlin live😂

Let's try this again and I hope it doesn't get deleted this time :) I remember when this episode aired, how having Uther back with Anthony Head acting in it again was pretty exciting. Yeah Uther was a terrible and cruel man, but his character had such presence in the show that his death definitely left a void afterwards. Don't get me wrong, I love the show since Arthur became king but having Uther back was pretty cool and Anthony Head does play quite the convincing evil spirit. The episode in itself doesn't bring much plotwise for the season, but it's a great Arthur character arc. First we see him show compassion and mercy to a woman suspected of having magic. I just wish we'd have more of that in the episode. I also like that Arthur doesn't even comment when Gaius mentions of his time studying the old ways. Remember how last season, he was almost mad at Gaius for his past as a magic user. In this episode, he doesn't even blink about it, he accepted Gaius' past and he doesn't condemn him for it. And same goes with the potion that Gaius has to make, it's quite obvious that it isn't any ordinary broth that could allow you to see the spirit of the dead, and yet, Arthur accepts the potion without problem. And at the end of the episode, he doesn't blame magic either, the horn is not even mentioned in the last scene. Arthur's attitude towards magic itself seems to have changed. We know he fears Morgana but maybe not magic itself anymore. That's the take I get from this episode anyway (but I may have rewatched it and analysed it too much XD). Second thing I love is that we see that for Arthur, the anniversary of his coronation is still painful after three years. I love how we get the explaination from Elyan about it, and how Gwen and Merlin both understand when Arthur slips away from the celebrations. I feel really sad for Arthur during the scene he sees Uther again, hearing the exact opposite of what he probably longed to hear, that his father was proud of the king he had become. But no, instead he gets's Uther condemning all of his choices and worse making him doubt himself afterwards. Of course, fortunately Merlin's here to remind him that Arthur had always followed his beliefs and that even when Uther was still alive. And it's true, from as early on as in season 1 when Arthur disobeyed to go on a quest to get the antidote to save Merlin, when he told Uther that he couldn't think of his own pride while his people was starving... There are so many exemples of Arthur already following his own beliefs no matter what his father taught him. Uther seing Merlin using magic is such a good scene! I love how Merlin nearly shouts "I was born with it", there's no more hiding anymore, and Colin's acting is just so good. I also love it when Merlin says that there had been magic at the heart of Camelot all along. I also wish their scene had been longer, maybe having Merlin reveal to Uther how many times he actually saved his life using magic (there are quite a few after all). Prior to that scene, I also absolutely love Arthur standing up for himself. I do agree that Uther hurting and wanting to kill Arthur is out of character. I actually have a little theory about that. I think that Uther being in the land of the death and suddenly being released must have altered and accuented the worst parts of his personality. Because most of his actions trhoughout the episode actually are quite on point with what he used to do (he did tried to have Gwen executed twice after all, and wanted to excute Gwaine because he was a comoner who had attacked a knight). In a deleted scenes from season 3, Arthur also mentioned how his grandfather (Uther's dad) grew mad at the end of his life, when Uther's spirit was freed, maybe this madness was also taking over. I also believe that Arthur not being trained properly to go to the land of the dead and just going in blind did have consequences. This episode also had some of my favorite Merlin and Arthur scenes in the show. I just love their dynamic in this episode. The banter, the bickering, the nagging (yep still married) and of course the poetry XD Oh Leon, what the hell must he be thinking in that scene XD He clearly doesn't buy the poetry excuse and it's such a shame we did not get a follow up scene with Leon telling the knights about it. I can't totally imagine what Gwaine would have said "oh poetry they said? That's what they call it these days. I do a lot of peotry myself with some fair madens and lads in this kingdom if you catch my meaning" *winks at the knights* and only Mordred looks in confused because he's still so young and clueless :P. There are just so many memes about that peotry scene, it's beautiful ! Also, Rupert Young (Leon) said in the audio commentary that he wanted that scene showing Leong sneaking with a kitchen maid and then have the two walk in on Merlin and Arthur, but the director refused that suggestion saying it might be too tongue in cheek. But we all know the real reason is because we already had two people (Merlin and Arthur) exactly doing that and it was Leon who was walking in on them sneaking :P The scene with Arthur hiding the horn and emptying the bowl of apples while Merlin enters the room is just comedy gold XD I love everyhting about that scene. Arthur's oh shit moment Merlin's coming, need to hide the horn before he starts nagging me, Merlin's confused and yet completely used to it reaction as he walks in. Merlin stubbornly trying to reach for the bowl and Arthur telling him to not ask questions because he's the king and he doesn't have to explain himself to Merlin, and of course the "you're threatening me with a spoon" XD The great king of legend threatening the most powerful warlock of all times with a spoon, this show just gives us so many gold moments with these two !!! To make Merlin scream like that, Arthur totally shoved that spoon up Merlin's ... XD Then we have the scene with Gaius. When they have the jump as they turn around and he's there XD never fails to make me laugh. Also, Gaius is so proud of Merlin for hiding the foul taste of the potion to Arthur XD You can just see him in his expression in that scene. Also, the shadows scene XD Merlin, for being such a powerful and wise (at times) warlock, you really are a complete idiot XD The shadow Arthur slapping shadow Merlin is just perfect. One thing that we can congratulate Merlin on this episode thouigh, is how he finally understands Arthur's hand signs. Remember how in 1x11 he was completely helpless with those and here we have him follow exactly what Arthur signs him to do. Arthur must be so proud :D The last scene has to be one of the most suggestive ones they've had on the show :P Horseplay, more like foreplay :P Also the fist XD (and we get a great reaction from Colin in the bloopers from that scene XD) On a more serious note, I get your frustration with the non reveal moment. I actually was so scared and excited at the same time in that scene. But can you imagine how awful it would have been for Merlin to have Uther of all people reveal his secret to Arthur ? This would have been a nightmare come true for Merlin.... So as much as it's frustrating, I'm glad it did not happen this way. It's a cruel teaser from the show producers though. My interpretation of that scene is that Arthur couldn't allow Uther to hurt someone else he cared about. He got to one of his knights, then Gwen, then even him, but he would not allow his father to hurt Merlin or say anything bad about him, so he blew on the horm before Uther had the chance to do any more damage. Also, seing his father trying to kill Merlin was the last straw for him. Merlin's face when he looks at Arthur after Uther disappeared, he was terrified and you can just see it on his face... On a less serious note : In the audio commentary, Rupert Young joked that Uther was actually going to say "Merlin has been to the gym" in reference to how much bulkier Colin looked in season 5 XD Next episode, Mithian's back and I can't wait for your reaction to the episode :) Thanks for reacting to the season 5 promo. I really think it's one of the best they did for the show. I remember how hyped we were and how we tried to guess what was coming from the clips that were shown. It does tease a few bits for later episodes with familiar faces coming back and new ones to look forward to. Until next week for episode 4 :)
