Great reaction, and you have some really interesting theories and observations in your commentariy at the end. This was another great two parter and really sets the tone for the season. We start off with Morgana's nightmare and then Aithusa shows up. Each time I watch this episode, I feel so sad for Aithusa, thinking back to the lovely adorable baby dragon hatching and now... it's just so sad.... You can definitely tell from that nightmare that something terrible happened to Morgana and Aithusa and it explains why the young dragon is sort of bonded to Morgana now. As we see at the end, Aithusa stays with Morgana. When it comes to Aithusa, I think Merlin did a terrible job being a dragonlord... and so did Kilgharrah. Why didn't they both look after the young dragon ? When Aithusa is finally reunited with her dragonlord and he tells her to leave.... breaks my heart.... (yeah I have a lot of feelings about Aithusa and what happened to her, this baby deserved better, fortunately all the cute fanarts fix it in the most adorable ways). The Diaimair is quite an interresting creature and it's always great to add on to the lore on the show. My only problem with it is the design, it's just too alien for a show like Merlin. Even Colin, in the audio commentary, his reaction to it was "what the f...." (just like you last episode lol) and mentioned that it did look weird. Not the best visual effect either.... But I love the scene at the end with Merlin. At first the Diaimair commends him for his wisdom not asking any question, but then Merlin goes back on it and asks the one about Arthur's bane. It's quite subtle, but you can see in the Diaimair's reaction that maybe Merlin isns't so wise after all. The fact that Arthur's bane is himself is really intriguing and interesting too, and twice in the episode, we get a transition to a scene with Mordred. Morgana's unhinged and you can definitely tell that whatever she's been through those past three years, it definitely did not help her sanity... That line about wanting to see the crows feast on Arthur's eyes (very GOT XD) just, wow, that's the same Morgana who threatened Sofia all the way back in season 1 when she had vision of her killing Arthur. Katie is really good again this episode. My favorite scene of her has to be her confrontation with Arthur. When she says "Uther taught me well" chills ! also "I grew up". Even though she's clearly past the point of no return, I still feel sad for her when she gets stabbed in the back by Mordred. She was so happy when she saw Mordred and was reunited with him, and she looks so sad and betrayed when he turns on her. And once again, at the end she's alone with Aithusa again... Merlin is also much different than at the beginning. It's just like when he killed Agravaine. He has changed so much over the years and even Gaius is the one who has to tell him to give Mordred the benefit of the doubt. In earlier season, it was Gaius who tended to be more suspicious and Merlin had the more opitimistic views, once again the best exemple is Morgana. Gaius was the one who thought it better to never tell Morgana about her powers and Merlin was all for helping her at the start of season 2. This shift is quite interesting, because it shows how paranoid Merlin has become over the years (with Morgana, Kilgharrah attacking Camelot, countless betrayals...). I love Merlin, as a character he's my favortite, and what I love about him is that although he's genuinely a good character, he commits mistakes and he's far from perfect, it's really more of a grey area, and Colin portrays that so well. I also love the contrast with Arthur this episode. As you pointed it out, Arthur is the optimistic one this episode and Merlin is the ruthless one, even berating Arthur for not killing Mordred (something he would have never done back in the earlier seasons). And you can tell by Arthur's reaction that he's shocked by this. You mentioned how Morgana is obssessed this episode, well Merlin has tunnel vision when it comes to Mordred and protecting Arthur no matter what. He must still be haunted by the vision and clearly can't trust Mordred. Even at the end, you can sense the tension between the two and I remermber how excited I was to see more of their interraction in the next episodes. I also really liked the scenes between Gaius and Gwen. The first one, with Gwen showing a more ruthless side of her, Gaius was both impressed and scared. And the second scene, when Gaius tried to pretend not to know how to read the druid prayer and Gwen was having none of his bullshit XD One of my fave scenes with these two from the two parter. All interractions between Merlin and Arthur are always fun to watch and this episode had quite a few. Also, there was a cute deleted scene in which Arthur tries to convince Merlin to go back to Camelot and bring Gwen the royal seal in case he didn't make it back, and Merlin refuses "I'm not going back, not without you!" *my heart* they really could have kept it in. We also got some awesome bloopers from the scenes in the snow (Eoin - Gwaine- falling over a lot, and Bradley bringing his camera and acting like a tourist with Colin XD). Arthur's completely "I'm so done with this idiot but I love him too much" face when Merlin goes after the dragon XD And I love how Gwaine just doesn't react because he's just so used to these two together :P I also loved when your first idea when Arthur said they need to blend in was for them to be shirtless XD Expectations : shirltess Arthur and Merlin rescuing the knights / Reality : Merlin and Arthur dressed as soldiers. I have to admit, I definitely hoped that's what Arthur ment by blending in :P Percival gathering the troups to fight back is also a great highlight of the episode. I love how badass the knight are in this two parter. Leon in the first episode with his swordfight, Elyan against Ruadan, Gwaine sassing Morgana and Percival fighting the gards with his troup. And now we have another knight, Sir Mordred. That was definitely a twist I had not exepcted back then. It definitely was quite an intriguing way to end this two parter, knowing what we know from the prophecy about Mordred. I really can't wait for you to discover what's to come for all the characters. And yay for the reaction to the promo video next week :) Also, I can't wait for your reaction to the next episode, the promo definitely is a bit different than what we're used to (in terms of editing and music). I won't say more, so I hope you'll have a good time with your friend and enjoy your week-end :).

I can't believe you’re on the final season already! Things have clearly changed in the three year time skip between season 4 and season 5. Gwen, for example, definitely seems pretty sure of herself as queen, which I absolutely love to see; as you said, she really was playing 3D chess. It must have taken some time for her to adjust to her new position but I think she’s doing a good job. As for Merlin, I agree with you on the fact that he’s far more pessimistic and paranoid than he was in earlier seasons. Not only is it clear to us as viewers, but even Arthur points it out several times throughout the episode. Also, the scene with Aithusa always makes me so upset; she was so reluctant to leave Merlin until he ordered her to :( I can't wait for you to watch and react to the rest of the season! I’m actually really sad that we’re nearing the end though :(

You spoke on it really well. The visions and prophecies are a curse. You can’t treat someone like a villain and expect them not to become one. It’s interesting and sad how pessimistic and negative Merlin has become. He’s so burdened by his responsibilities that he’s paranoid and distrusting of everything and anyone. He’s consumed by the future that he doesn’t just enjoy the present. He’s playing a dangerous game. I would say most of what happens in the show is his fault. His paranoia and interference is what leads to the things he’s afraid of. I feel so bad for Aithusa. It feels like Merlin has abandoned her. You can sense he’s not treating her well with how scared she was. No wonder Aithusa has formed a bond with Morgana instead. She gave Morgana life at the end of S4 and it looks like Morgana really cares for her. The character arcs this season are really interesting. Merlin, Gwen, Mordred. Some arcs have put me off certain characters but they’re all equally lovely to watch and developed well.
