I can't believe you're already starting season 5, I'm both excited and sad because this is the last season and I've really enjoyed your reaction a lot every week. As a suggestion, I suppose you could do Musketeers next, Santiago Cabrera is one of the main characters and since you loved Lancelot, I'm sure you'd love Aramis too :D Ok onto the episode, first of all, there's a three year gap since the s4 finale. It is briefly mentioned during the round table meeting but you probably missed it. So yeah, things have changed a bit since last time, and the most obvious one is Gwen. She's such a contrast to where we left her in season 4. I remerber being really conflicted about that abrupt change in her personality and wondering what the hell happened to her to harden her so much.... She's just so far away from the Gwen I loved from the very beginning. It felt really strange to see her like that. But on re-watch, I appreciate it more and understand that as Queen she definitely couldn't behave like she used to anymore, at least not while in court. But still, it was quite a shock for me. Also, if you listen to the music during the sentencing scene, it's the same one that used to be played when Uther was having someone executed, it's quite weird having that theme play in a scene with Gwen. The season openings are always really good in Merlin, and this episode is definitely not an exception to the rule. I love how everything seem to be on a bigger scale, the locations are various and we have at last the round table (and yep, must be a pain to move it when they need the room for big events XD). My only problem with the round table is that Merlin doesn't get a seat like he did in the season 3 finale. I know that in Arthur's pov Merlin's just a servant but he's also the one who's never stopped supporting him throughout all these years. It would have been so right for Merlin to have a seast at Arthur's right instead of that random knight.... (yeah it's been years, and I'm still bitter about it...). I love that you noticed the contrast between Merlin looking throughout the castle when it was filled with people everywhere (in s4 opening) whereas here it's starts with all rooms and corridors being empty. And of course, we immediately get banter between the boys, just acting like an old married coupe again :D You know from my previous comments that their relationship is the heart of the show for me, and they have such good scenes in this episode. My 2 favorite scenes (I couldn't pick just one) is when Arthur noticed Merlin away from the camp and he immediately goes to see what's upsetting him. Arthur has always been able to sense when Merlin's upset and I love that even though he's surrounded by all his knights, he goes to seek Merlin out and then sits beside him. We have to remember that Arthur is a king and Merlin's status as a servant. This is such an unusual thing for a king to do but it's Arthur and Merlin before being a king and his servant, and I love how this scene really illustrates this. My second fave scene is after they've escaped Morgana and they can't sleep (there's a deleted longer version of that scene with them arguing on which side to sleep which is so adorable <3) and Merlin tells him about his fears after the druid showed him the vision. Arthur's little smile to Merlin saying "and I swear I will protect you or die at your side". And in both scenes, there's their theme playing "The bond of sacrifice" wich is one of the most beautiful soundtrack on the show. I also love how Merlin sasses Arthur this episode "putting up with you" "how about threatening an ass" XD once again, so screams married couple :D I loved when you called bullshit when Arthur told Merlin he wouldn't bother looking for him if he went missing. Yeah right, episode 6 of season 4 tells a complete diferrent story when Arthur went to look for Merlin himself when the search parties found no trace of him, and yep he sent search parties to scour the entire forrest to look for Merlin.... Oh Arthur, you fool no one ! Another scene that I absolutely adore is when Merlin and Arthur are too busy staring at each other that Leon has to reach for the wine himself to get his drink. Poor guy has been dealing with their shit for years now XD and of course the juggling and Arthur's WTF face XD Comedy gold! Fun trivia, Colin learnt to juggle for this episode (he knew the basic because he had to from one of his earlier works but he had to learn to perfect his juggling). The net scene is also comedy gold and I love it. Also, a fan pointed out that Arthur did not actually need to shield Merlin, and it would have made much more sense to let Merlin be captured and then free him with his sword, but nope, Arthur's 'Merlin's in danger' senses were just too strong to ignore and they ended up both in the net XD Also the grunting and panting sounds while they stuggle in the net, sometimes this show just make it too easy :P This scene also gave us some of the cutest fanarts with these two trapped in the net <3 and some adorable BTS pictures as well :D Morgana is such an ice queen in this episode, I love her new look though. I had the Merlin calendar when season 5 came out and her promo pics were some of my faves! This episode has also a very GOT vibe with the big north, the crows and of course the two guest star with Ser Davos and Master Pycelle (the druid Vadis who showed Merlin the vision). It's almost a crossover XD You were right in pointing out that the show looked sharper n the coloring, I think they used a different camera lense to film season 5. Season 4 was already in HD but they used even better quality for season 5, I think they mention it in an audio commentary later on. Your reaction to the Alien like creature is exactly what I expected XD This design is just weird for a show like Merlin, we crossed over to Doctor who XD Also, the knights being shirtless is pure fanservice because, plot wise, it doesn't make sense for them to be shirtless because it's clear that it's really cold in the caves (we can see the air coming out of their mouth, it must be freezing, poor knights....). Having the traitor discovered right away definitely was a nice change of pace compared to s3 (Morgana) and s4 (Agravaine). Gwen is definitely more observant than Arthur :P One thing that does bother me, continuity wise, is that in s4 Arthur made peace with the druid (episode 10) but here it's clear that they're still perecuted, maybe not as much, but their magic is still forbidden in Camelot. So what exactly happened after episode 10 of season 4, did Arthur do something official like a peace treaty ? Or was his promise just verbal to free Elyan from the possession and there was no follow up? The show is really good, but sometimes, the writing is quite inconsistent and this is a good exemple of that. Now onto the most important part of the episode (in my opinion) and the scene that definitely sets the tone for what's to come: the vision. First of all, the visual with the crimson sky, the batlle, the fire, it looks so epic. And then we see a young man that looks odly familiar (and yep you guessed it right, It's Mordred) facing Arthur, they fight and we see Arthur fall. A similar vision was shown to Morgana in the s4 opener by the way, not sure if you remerber, a similar battle was shown, the crimson sky, Excalibur on the battlefield and Morgana looking up at old Merlin begging for his help, and we know that after seeing that vision Morgana was obssessed with finding who Emrys is thougout season 4. Here Merlin is really shaken by this vision and he immediately asks Kilgharrah about it. Merlin has been protecting Arthur's life for so long now but this threat definitely feels different and it's clear that Merlin's genuinely worried. We see him thoughout the episode being haunted by the vision. He can't even realy tell Arthur about it but when he does mention it, Arthur also realises that this is something that's upsetting Merlin a lot. At this point, protecting Arthur and being at his side, it's not just to do with destiny for Merlin, he does it because he cares so deeply about Arthur and the thought of losing him is unthinkable. His fear of Morgana is also strange because Merlin is powerful, but I think he's just so shaken because he knows she's looking for Arthur's bane, and Merlin probably fears that what he saw, will happen when they arrive in Ismere. And to top it all, who shows up at the end of the episode, Mordred, the man he saw in the vision. And we see on Merlin's face the moment he realises who Mordred is and how his worst fear has come to pass, the man from the vision is Mordred. The same Mordred that the dragon once told him was destined to kill Arthur. Oh man, I'm so excited for your next reactions! I remember that this episode really got me hype for the reste of the season. Like you, I wanted Mordred to return and he's finally here. Also, Alexander Vlahos was such a great casting choice because he definitely looks like he could be an older Asa Butterfield (who played young Mordred), and he's a great actor too, great addiction to the cast :D Thank you for your reaction to my edit, I didn't expect it so it was a really nice surprise :D They really are the cutest, glad you enjoyed the trip down to the Merlin and Arthur memory lane ;) And I found your answer about the what you'd like the magic reveal to be very interestig, thanks for answering :) Can't wait for your next reaction. Maybe afterwards, you could react to the season 5 promo wich is mainly a teaser for the rest of the season (not more spoilery than any promo you'll watch after each episode, it's mainly clips from the 2 first episode with a few teasers from the rest of the season) and it's just one of the best promo they did for the show : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBeXGcu6oQY&ab_channel=BBC
