First of all, thank you for the mention at the beginning, I'm glad you enjoy my long comments :) I really enjoy writing them :D This episode is really good and a great Gaius episode as well. Agravaine is a real snake once again... First, that intro scene when he's taking care of Morgana just gives me creeper vibes. Morgana's obssession with Emrys reaches a new level this episode and poor Gaius paid the price... I love how we also get introduced to a new people of magic, the Catha. The lore on this show is just really interesting and rich and it's always great to see new kinds of magic. Also, great guest star as well. I also love how this episode is a direct continuation from the previous one, with Arthur still expressing his doubts and Agravaine taking advantage of that. He's a snake but he's a really good manipulator and knows how to talk to Arthur to plant seeds of doubts in his mind. I also like that Arthur is reluctant to interrogate Gaius at first, insisting on Gaius' loyalty for his father and for him. The interrogation scene is really painful to watch... And Agravaine is just so ugh... I really hate him in this episode. And the scene after Gaius was kidnapped, oh that scene really packs an emotional punch. First we have Agravaine saying "but the lies and years of betrayal" and then we get this cut to Merlin's face and man, this must haunt Merlin, knowing that's exactly what he's doing to Arthur with his own lies about his magic... It's scenes like these that made me fear the way Arthur would one day find out about Merlin... And of course, the scene just between Merlin and Arthur after Agravaine leaves. Just like you, I wanted Arthur to give Merlin a hug. When Merlin says that Gaius wouldn't leave without saying goodbye to him, my heart... Arthur really should doubt Agravaine, but I think his wish to have a connection to his mother (which we know is really important to him from episode 2x06) trumps everything else... It really is quite irrational to put so much trust in someone who only showed up reacently in his life above a man who's been there for him his entire life, who has proven his loyalty to Camelot countless times. And even though, I think it's really stupid of Arthur to trust Agraaine, I also get why, he lost his father and his uncle is the last remaining link to his mother. He's also lost Morgana in a sense, since she's been such a big part of his life when he grew up and now she's his mortal enemy. Arthur really hasn't been lucky in the family department.... So yeah, I get why he doesn't want to doubt his uncle. And now I want to hug Arthur.... Poor guy. Another thing I ke, is the Merlin and Gwen friendhsip. I love them so much and I hate that we get so little interractions between them. The scene when she tries to confort Merlin is both sad and adorable. And I also like that it's not Arthur doing the conforting, because after their talk I don't think Merlin would welcome it. But I do think Arthur was worried about Merlin this episode, even if we did not see it. I also love that Gwaine helped Merlin no questions asked. I love their bromance, and I missed it this season. Last time we had them working together was the first part of the finale of season 3 when Arthur had been hit by the poisoned arrow. One thing I regret about season 4, is how Gwaine more or less became the comic relief character (especially in the two openers of the season). I prefer this Gwaine, fiercly loyal to Merlin. I just wish he had not been so easily convinced by Agravaine's bullshit about using a blade to check if Gaius was breathing.... That was such a stupid move on his part.... Although, that scene gave us quite a few hilarious memes XD Alator betraying Morgana is one of my favortie twist this season. But Morgana is seriously oblivious when Alator just crouches next to Merlin and says he knows who Emrys is and where he is exactly. I mean, she could have put two and two togehter XD But I guess being oblivious to Merlin is just a family trait for Pendragons XD Poor Merlin must have been so scared in that scene though and it could have turned so different if it weren't for Alator's loyalty to him. There's a deleted scene between Merlin and Alator before Alator leaves. Merlin tells him not to worry, that one day Arthur will change (regarding to his attitudes towards magic) and Alator tells him to hold on to his beliefs and that when the time of Albion comes, he should remember him. And then he promises Merlin he'll be there for that time. I just like that scene because it shows how Merlin is such a bacon of hope for the future. Then we have one of my favortite scenes in the show between Gaius and Arthur. I love that Gaius finally told Arthur that the sorcerer did not kill Uther but tried everyhting in his power to save him. I still wish he had told him earlier and had mentioned the amulet, but at least now Arthur knows part of the truth wish is quite significant. I also love how Gaius tells Arthur about Merlin (without mentioning his name of course) about how one day Arthur will know and understand how much he's done for him. Like you, this scene made me crave for the time Arthur finds out about Merlin's magic and everything else. This line also reminds me of when Arthur recovered from the bite of the questing beast in season one, and mentions to Uther that he believes someone is watching ower him and protecting him, to which Uther says "in your long way to become king, you will need a gardian angel". I love when we get little hints that Arthur is aware of something but doesn't know quite how or who is protecting him (yep, just as oblivious as his sister XD). And last but not least, we get great ship moments between Merlin and Arthur again this episode. I love the scene when Merlin wakes him up, it's just so domestic, and their dynamic screams old married couple, with Merlin being the nagging wife telling his husband all that he has to do and to get up already. Pure comedy gold these two in that scene :D Also, the last scene when Merlin tells Arthur he's shit at apologising XD again, old married couple vibes. Even Agravaine is aware and uses Merlin's wish to please Arthur to get him out of the way for when Gaius gets kidnapped. He just knew that the best way to get him out of the way was to give him something to do for Arthur, and the pleased smile on Merlin's face when Agravaine tells him the knife is a gift for Arthur :) Also, when Merlin's just casually there in Arthur's room when he wakes up XD I just love it ! And of course, there's another deleted scene with Arthur roaming around the castle in his sleeping clothes looking for Merlin. He asks Agravaine if he has seen him and then he tells him he's been looking everywhere for him, he checked Merlin's chambers, the armoury and the stables. And when Agravaine asks Arthur when's the last time he saw him, Arthur replies "last night!" Also, Arthur uses Merlin's insult "dollophead" in that scene. When you're done with season 4, I'll link you the video with all the deleted scenes from the seasons, there are quite a few jems for Merthur :D Oh and I almost forgot, Morgana wking up alone in the cave with the bracelet, is the biggest f* you Alator could have given her XD I just find it really funny. I'm curious to see your reaction to next week's episode, not one of my fave but it has its moments. And there are two particular scenes I can't wait to see you react to XD (yep it's ship moments) Well, have a great week until then :)
