So every villan Yusuke has faced since around the Saint beasts has commented on his unusual or strange power/potential before this. Also when fighting Toguro besides the Phoenix spirit energy form when he thought kuwabara died and he reached a even higher form he was emmiting blue spirit energy but also red energy (demon energy) people in the crowed said it was like Toguro and his energy is mixing but the red energy was actually coming from Yusuke. So you could argue that at least from around right before the Saint beasts or during the dark tournament the Yusuke was a demon thing was setup. We also got info about Hiei that we wouldn't know till much later what it means in the Saint beast arc. This is later in season 1.
