You just get it and that's why you are my favorite Merlin reactor! This episode has everything and it's a huge fan favorite of the entire show and definitely one of the best Merthur episodes as well :D I have such a soft spot for caring Arthur and this episode just gave us that in spades. From Arthur's worried look when he saw Merlin on the floor, then taking care of his wounds and finally admitting that Merlin is brave and incredibly loyal and no jokes following that statement (just like many other times before). Arthur is very vulnerable and open in the beginning of the episode and it's no wonder this scene made some people start to ship them (I had already started since end of season 2). And then we have Arthur refusing to leave Merlin behind even though Merlin insists that Arthur should leave. As a king, the logical and sensible thing to do would be to just save himself, Merlin's just a servant after all, but nope Arthur is not leaving him behind because Merlin's his friend (and we know because Arthur has said so in previous episodes) and he just cares too much about him. When Merlin makes the rocks fall, Arthur's scream just breaks my heart... He's terrified for Merlin and after that we see him absolutely refuse to give up despite what everyone is telling him. I love the symbolism of Merlin's piece of clothing landing at the heart of Camelot on the map <3 also when Arthur just shuts Agravaine up with his hand, bitch stop talking right now, my man is not dead! Just perfect! And then, after everyhting else failed, Arthur decided to go looking for Merlin himself, even refusing to listen to Gwen (who acts like a mother or sister in this scene more than a love interest). And when he finally sees that Merlin is alive and well (from what he can see), there's no hesitation, he rushes to him and embraces him despite Merlin being covered in mud. After years of waiting after the almost hug in season 2, we finally get to see Arthur hug him, and with such a smile on his face, he's just so relieved to have Merlin back <3 (I still don't like the way the end of the scene was edited though, cuts too abruptly). The only thing I hate about this scene is that we find out later on that Merlin doesn't even know Arthur hugged him :'( which is really sad... After that, enter sassy assassin Merlin, he really puts the sass in assassin XD his scenes with Gaius XD poor Gaius, those burns... but we love how sassy Merlin is in this episode. And then enter Jealous Merlin (and yep, you totally get it, you're a true Merthur shipper :D), the scene with Gwen at lunch, omg, it's so perfect, the way Colin plays Merlin as the jealous boyfriend who's quite possessive of his man :D Then we have conflicted assassin and horny Merlin (and yep you definitely caught on that as well XD), his mouth says "get dressed" but his eyes tell a different story ;) also Merlin's falied attempts at killing Arthur are just so ridiculous and funny XD Poor Merlin though, Gwen knocking him out with that pitcher twice... Then the next day, Merlin wears his purple shirt and it's my favorite outfit of his (last time we saw it was in episode 1 when Arthur and Merlin were teasing / flirtingwith each other, followed by Arthur's besotted face as Merlin walked away). Then we get the tub scene and that's just the icing on the cake, with Arthur seeking advice from Merlin so casually and then walking out from behind the screen without a care in the world completely naked and then his reaction to Gwen being there is "you're not Merlin" XD and immediately covering himself. By this point, the ship sails itself. Also, this cene is just so awkward and funny at the same time with Gaius just being casually there XD Arthur must have been so confused XD Then enters Old Merlin vs the knights XD and this time it's sassy old Merlin, love that the whole scene was just a way for Merlin to use the knights as stairs to be able to climb on his horse XD Also, Elyan's face when he sees Leon and Percival flying towards him XD this is so cartoony and yet so funny XD Morgana's reaction to seeing Emrys in her hut will never fail to make me laugh, she just dipps out XD The fights between Morgana and old Merlin is a bit repetitve but I guess Merlin couldn't go full strength and use other spells because of the aging spell weakening him. Still, I like the little throwback of the spell he used in Ealdor. Merlin killing the beast without hesitation, he's so savage XD We love him for it! The end of the episode, with Arthur wanting Merlin to get lessons from George XD And first lesson is polishing, well Merlin needs no help with that if you catch my drift ;) Also Merlin saying it's his favorite too, haha we bet it is ;) This episode is also proof that Merlin/Arthur is the worst kept secret in Camelot, everyone knows about them. Morgana "Arthur's strangely fond of the boy", "Why are you so loyal to Arthur", and she's using Merlin knowing Arthur's lets him get close enough, plus she's known about them from the very beginning let's be honnest here. Then Leon not even questionning Merlin when he says he's going to kill Arthur, nah for Leon they probably just had a lover's spat and Merlin's pissed at Arthur, but never would Leon belive that Merlin would actually try to kill Arthur (I loved your reaction to that scene XD) Then Gaius and Gwen knowing that Merlin would never try to kill Arthur if he were in his right mind. Whoever thought it was a good idea to hire a Merlin lookalike and dress him similarly as Arthur's new servant. He even has a damw neckerchief which is Merlin's signature outfit. Arthur's refusal of George and saying "he's my manservant and quite honestly I prefer it that way". How many times has Arthur complained about Merlin being a lousy servant ? And here he gets the perfect obedient servant, and nope Arthur wants his Merlin <3 Also, this reminded me of when Merlin was saying goodbye to Arthur in the season 1 finale, and asking Arthur not to get a bootlicker as a servant. I just like these little parallels. Also the way Arthur and Merlin look at eatch other in that last scene, it's a tie between I want to kill you or I want to have my way with you ;) Especially on Merlin's side XD The tavern is one of the best recurring jokes in the show, and when we think about it, the only times Merlin's actually been to a tavern and had drinks there was with Arthur (2x13 when they were searching for Balinor and 3x04 when they went for a drink after a hunting trip together before they met Gwaine). Maybe Arthur's pissed that Merlin is going without him... Theory time : There is one about why Merlin was such a lousy assassin. Morgana not knowing about the magic, the Fomorah did not use it as a weapon. Also, we've seen that Merlin has grown quite good at using weapons and yet he's completely useless with the crossbow and the sword while being under the fomorrah's powers. There is one thing Morgana doesn't know, Merlin has magic, and she did not take into account that a part of Merlin would fight the Fomorrah. Sje's says that Merlin's essence will be consumed until he kills Arthur but Merlin's magic is part of that essense and yet it's untouched. The theory is that Merlin's magic fought the urges to kill and that's why Merlin's so uncoordinated in his movements, he doesn't have the full control of his own body. It woudn't be the first time that we see Merlin's magic act on its own to protect Arthur, one of the best exemple was in 1x04 when Merlin was dying from poisoning and yet he still managed to sent a light to help Arthur in the cave. The theory is that his magic being part of Merlin, of course it would act on its own to protect Arthur's life. Agravaine really pisses me off in this episode. I like the scene when Arthur starts being suspicious of him but I hate how he can't realise that Agravaine is a lying peace of shit... Accusing Gaius of all people... I do love how Morgana is not one bit impressed by Agravaine, she's so ruthless and not just with her enemies and I love it. Also, Agravaine gave me such creeper vibed in that last scene when he finds Morgana unconscious. There's a hint there as to why Agravaine's motivation are in helping Morgana. Oh next episode is a good one! And there's a great guest star in it too ! I really enjoyed your reaction to this episode. Each time I re-watch it, I'm reminded of how the Merthur fandom broke Tumblr with gifs of the embrace all over the place XD ah good memories :D Even non Merlin fans knew about it and it was just glorious :D The embrace scene also has a cute blooper with Bradley making silly faces at Colin while filming it XD
