No one expected Uther's death so early on in the season. The showrunners really manged to keep that twist under wraps until the episode aired and the entire fandom was in shock after it. But like in real life, death can be so sudden and this episode kept us on the edge of our seat until the last seconds of Uther's life. It's episode 3, the king is dead, long live King Arthur ! How powerful that ending is! I just get chills every single time Merlin screams "Long live the King". This episode is both something we've always wanted, Arthur finally becoming King and taking over, but it's also one thing we feared and did not want, Arthur once again turning his back on magic.... One thing I don't get, is why Gaius didn't tell Arthur about the amulet, I know it wouldn't have made much difference becuse the amulet was magic and maybe Arthur would have believed that the old man put it around Uther's neck while he wasn't looking. But still, it's a huge clue and they just don't tell Arthur... I love how this episode misguided us in a false sense of security, oh this is just going to be a silly episode with an assassination attempt, Merlin and Arthur being goofs, old man Merlin showing up for laughs, and then the rugs gets pulled under our feet and the episode turns serious and so important in Arthur's journey. Like you said, the actors on the show have improved so much through the years and Bradley shines in this episode, the scene with him and Uther right after the attack just breaks my heart.... Also, all his scenes with Colin, these two share such chemistry and it's in an episode like this one that you just sit back, and enjoy their scenes for the beauty they are. I love how we both get completely silly and hilarious scenes between the two, that piggyback ride is just GOLD !, also "I broke a pot" and "I have to pee. Un less you want to come and watch me." "Why would I want to watch you?" (the writers are not even trying with subtext this season, it's just text now ) XD, and then we get the serious scenes in which their acting is just so raw and powerful. My absolute favorite scene in the episode is the one just before the coronation. It's perfect, from the acting, to the lighting, to the music. We've known for years now that these two share an unbreakable bond, that no matter what they'll remain on each other's side. Despite Arthur telling Merlin that magic is evil, despite Merlin believing he's lost the opportunity to ever make Arthur understand that magic isn't evil... All of this doesn't matter in the end, Arthur needs Merlin and Merlin needs Arthur. Merlin stays and waits the whole night for Arthur because he doesn't want Arthur to feel alone while he's grieving. And when Arthur finally emerges from the room, he finds his most loyal friend, and for the first time he aknowledges Merlin as his friend. All those time Arthur said that they cound't be friends, well now Arthur finally aknowledes that they are. It's a huge moment for them and it's definitely one of my favorite scenes in the show. I also love how right after they go back to how they usually are, Arthur telling Merlin they he'll get them some breakfast, like it's any other day. Also, that scene is just so domestic, I can't help but feel old married couple vibes (just like in the beggining of the epsode with their teasing and banter). I also love Morgana in this episode, once agin, we can see how much she's learnt from Morgause about magic, using that amulet was really clever. The more it goes on, the more she's becoming a bigger threat and I love it because Katie is just so good at playing her. Agravaine is still a snake... I get that he wanted Uther dead for what he did to his sister, but Ygraine would roll in her grave if she knew how he's plotting against her son... Old man Merlin or Dagoon the Great!, is always a laugh! OMG that scene in the hut with Arthur XD also did I mention the piggyback ride ? XD I still cannot believe there are no outtakes from that scene. They must have been because there's no way Colin and Bradley could play that witout cracking up XD We do have a very funny pic from the scene so I'm sure there must be some outtakes somewhere yet to be relased (Merlin fandom is still strong, they definitely should release new material :D ) I also love how serious Old man Merlin gets when talking about his wish for a land where magic will be allowed once more, the nuance between the humour and the more serious scenes with the character are brillantly acted by Colin. I also love how when he says "He's dead", we can clearly hear Merlin's real voice breaking through, because he's both so shocked and broken that he has to tell Arthur that... Oh man, I could talk about this episode for hours but I'll stop here. Next week is also a good one, yep you're right, Kilgharrah deserves to not be alone anymore. I really can't wait for your reaction, and also as a Merthur shipper, you'll definitely enjoy some of the scenes :D
