Glad you’re loving the amazing storyline and the way the anime has managed to retell the story, capturing all the important essence and still making it emotional and captivating. That’s why it’s definitely the more superior adaptation compared to the live action. The best adaptation is the audio drama, it’s pretty much bringing the words from the books alive verbatim. That would be worth checking out. It’s been translated too.

Wei basically loses control over the resentful energy coming from the amulet, it’s like Lan Zhan said, in all history no one has ever been able to come out on top when dabbl8ng with resentful energy, it corrupts the mind and controls your heart. That’s why Wei ends up having bouts of rage and hubris when dealing with people like Jin, and then when he gets out of control, that’s when deaths like Jin ZiXuan’s and later Jiang YanLi’s happened. This episode, Jiang and YanLi are already married. He was not invited to the wedding. But you would have seen in one of the scenes that Jiang Cheng brings YanLi in her wedding dress up to Burial Mounds to let him see because they still take him as family, and he would not have been able to attend the wedding. This episode, Wei was actually going to attend Jin Ling’s birth celebration, he’s made a silver bell for him. Jiang ZiXuan decided to invite him against everyone’s protestations cos he knows it’s important for Yan Li and wants to reconcile. He didn’t know the fat Jin orchestrated your have Wei ambushed. And then Wei, was using Wen Ning as a weapon since the fat Jin had removed any usable corpses around. And so Wen Ning lost control due to the resentful energy channeling into him from Wei who was also out of control from the amulet. And he accidentally kills Jin ZiXuan. That’s why you see Wen Ning in present day when he finally came to, he apologised to Wei.

Fun fact, Lan Zhan was definitely not just passing by YilIing for a night hunt in this episode. He’s been worried about Wei and so he’s come to visit him and to see if he’s doing okay. He has a famous line in the books where he tells his brother: “Older brother, I want to bring someone back to Cloud Recesses. Bring him back, and keep him safe (hidden)”. The feels!

Next episode will tell you how Wen Ning and your waifu Wen Qing hopes to help Wei resolve Zhen ZiXuan’s death but then the Jin Sect obviously was just trying to use it as a pretext to get to Wei. And so you’re spot on, all the remaining Wen clan normal folk old and young on Burial Mounds end up getting killed. And that of course sends Wei into a rage. Spoiler from the book:In the books, Lan Zahn never got to see Wei die. It is extra tragic because in the books there were two retaliatory fights. One was Wei going up to Nightless City where the Jin had declared war on him and rallied the others to go and kill him and the Wens on Burial Mounds. Wei turns up at Nightless City and a big fight ensues. He loses control and is heavily injured, Lan Zhan rescues him and flees with him. The Gusu Lan sect wants to protect Lan Zhan from

being targeted as Wei’s accomplice so follows them and finds Lan Zhan trying to calm Wei down and restore some energy for him by sending his own Qi into Wei, whilst confessing to a dazed out Wei who didn’t take in what he said, so he kept telling Lan Zhan to get lost. And then the Gusu Lan sect arrived and pled to Lan Zhan to let him go and return to Gusu. He refused and he fought them, injuring 33 of his own sect elders. He returns Wei to burial mounds and then he goes back to Gusu to take his punishment. That’s why he ended up having 33 scars on his back, one stroke of Qi-weaponised beating for each elder he injured. One beating from that renders the person completely bedridden and so when Wei died on Burial mounds from a second siege by the Jin and others, Lan Zhan was bedridden in Gusu and didn’t know about it. Until his older brother told him. And despite being sick and severely weakened, he ran to burial mounds to try to find wei’s body and found nothing.
