update: added some versions with a flat, un-shaded background. I think I like these better:

The longer I worked on this one the less I liked how it was coming out... maybe that was the issue. I kept trying to improve the shading but the more I tried, the worse looked to my eyes. I've got a couple versions so I'll upload them all, and chalk this one up to a learning experience.
