I did mention that this one was rather ambitious... I reckon another full day of painting and we'll have this all finished up and in colour!

I've got a kinky fun Triss Merigold pic to share later in the week, my friends!

You may be wondering "why do it all black and white *then* colour it?" The answer is quite simple, but the explanation is a bit more complex. The answer is that I'm still learning to paint (compared to drawing and colouring which I've done for years.) The explanation for using this method, commonly known as creating a Value Painting (getting things light and dark correctly), separates the process into more managable steps. The easiest way to explain it is like learning to drive a car. First you learn how to make it move, then quiet roads etc and work your way up. Jumping straight into a colour painting is like driving at high speed on a winding mountain road - before I've got the knack of driving around a quiet village on a Sunday morning. The Value Painting allows me to focus on things one step at a time - get the shadows where they're supposed to go, make sure they're dark enough, everything is balanced etc. Once this looks good, I can start thinking about what colours go where. Fortunately, I've come up with a method for applying colour relatively efficiently with minimal "over painting" (painting things again over the top) - If you want to learn this approach, or watch the amazing Dave Greco (an artist I aspire to be as good as), this is the one I found most useful: GREYSCALE to COLOR - Digital Painting Tutorial
