Aygul was the only child in the family, and she was a jewel to her father. Unfortunately, her mother died in childbirth. Tragedy followed another, and the family escaped from their home near the City-State of Saril. The family found their home on the shore of another sea and settled in B'tumi. Because her father was busy building his business in the new city, Aygul was mostly raised by slaves. The most important figures for her were the slave girl Anahit who was like a mother to her. Another important figure was the foreman of slaves Gor from eastern lands. After Casia appeared in her life, they were all the time together.

When Aygul grew up, she learned that her place in society was not much different from a slave. So father made an agreement to marry her to slave dealer Gevorg Mukuziani who was his business partner's son. Aygul knew that marriage would be rich, but Gevorg was cruel, and his mother was even worts. Old Mukuziani didn't like Casia and Aygul knew they would sell her or send her to some distant place. Aygul also knew that after marriage, she would be allowed only to command house slaves while working with them. They would deny her to participate in the business. She would be constrained to help her father to deal with a group of Northmen who had helped him to grow his company.

Then one evening, Aygul got an idea. She was unsure if that was because of Casia, wine, or both. Aygul liked the leader of Northmen, and Casia was given to serve him on his every visit. Through Casia and her language skills, Aygul had a good connection with the commander. So Aygul decided that she would escape with Casia and join the Northmen crew. The crew had female warriors who were equal to men, and those women looked like Vahagnian female Warlords who Aygul admired. The only difference was that these women were respected in society.

So Aygul worked with her plan, and she managed to get her and Casia's places in the boat through a series of accidental events. Then the journey to the unknown started, and it was a long way through strange River lands that were totally different from what Aygul had gotten used to.
