You know that I have a bad habit of overthinking, and I love to give some background to my characters. In ancient Emarukistan, it was easy. The usual way to slavery was to be a victim of the raid or be sold by parents/relatives in a bad situation. But how about modern contemporary Emarukistan? Rules are more complex, and society has changed, although many institutions from the past are still there.

Ronja was tired but happy she was at home. Her box was just a small rathole at the end of the metro line that took her to the university. It was the best she was able to afford. The government decided to build this kind of boxes in the university city a few years after the 44 days war. The idea was to allow students from the regions to access universities. War was very costly in human life, and the country needed educated young people. In the beginning, buildings were owned and maintained by the city. Then slowly, buildings were slipping to the hands of the investors and oligarchs. After that, owners rented apartments with low money to students and people with social problems.

Ronia was in real trouble. She would be graduating soon as an English teacher, but there were no jobs because she was from the region and had no relatives in the capital; she was forced to rent a low-cost apartment. Her parents were farmers, and they didn't have enough income to support her. They also had difficulties accepting her plan to go to the city and study at the university. One of the biggest problems was that she would be living alone without relatives who would support her and protect her reputation. Alone girl in the big city was considered a spoiled girl. The opinion of the villagers was not her main problem. She didn't plan to go back to the village, marry a local boy, and be the farmer's wife. That was not an option. At the end of her studies, Ronia was out of money, and a huge loan was pressing her shoulders.

It was Friday, and her friends were heading to the city to have fun. Ronia was not planning to join them. Instead, she would relax this evening alone, and the next evening she would spend with her friend Elena. Elena was a brave girl, but she didn't have the same pressure as locals because she was from the north. Elena had quit her studies after she got the role in the fantasy series in the pre-middle age world. The show was very brave and had a lot of nudity. Although many people claimed not to follow the show, everybody knew what was happening. Elena has been luring Ronja to join her. Elena got a small job in a local pub through the show, and she had enough money to support her living. Unfortunately, Ronia needed much more to survive from her student lown.

But now it was Friday, and she could worry later. This evening she would have a few glasses of wine, relax, listen to music, and dance.
